Yorkies in the pool Does anyone take their yorkies swimming? I need some pointers on how to play with Saffron in the pool. I took her in yesterday & today cause she seemed so hot. Think she liked it. (Well, she didn't fuss or anything & seemed relaxed for the most part) I held her to my chest & walk-floated around. Then I let her go (with my hands under her but not touching) & let her swim about 1 foot to the stairs. My pool is above ground so there's no shallow end...not that she'd be tall enough for it if I did have one. I use Bacquacil (sp) instead of chlorine, which I find much gentler. Her hair felt like it had conditioner on it when it dried. I also have a life jacket for her. Thought I could use it when we play alittle "catch the floaty ball". Tried it out but she didn't seem overly keen on it. Think I'll have to keep getting her used to it. Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thank you! Marty :aimeeyork |
I have had Lily in our pool the last couple of days. I put her on a kick board and push her around. She seems to like it but doesn't get to excited about swimming. She likes to walk across all the tubes and mats floating in the pool. I don't really know how to play with her either until she decides she likes to swim. |
I have read many posts about their Yorkie's swimming and loving it... We don't have a pool but if so Id introduce Schatzie to it in a heart beat! |
I have a kiddle pool that is big enough for me to put a float in and lay on it to sun.....it will hold about a foot of water...I put Romeo in it this weekend and he just started dog paddling around..then he hopped on my and just looked around...he seemed to like it....I'll try it again this weekend...we've got a heat index of 107 now! |
my puppy is a waterhog too. the only thing we can do now is put him in the bathtub so he can get used to the feel of water. i would just take it slow and not rush her too much. if you have a kiddy pool that would be good until she gets really into it. if not then just take it slower and don't give it to her all at once! good luck. |
I believe Kim (SoCalYorkiLvr) takes her babies to the pool lots of times! Perhaps you could PM her for some advice. ;) |
We haen't opened out big pool yet hopefully this weekend but we did get Bella a kiddie pool. She loves it in there, she wasn't sure about it at first but now loves it. We also bought a kids sprinkler and let her play in that.. Just keep her going in the water, she will get used to it and eventually like it. |
I would just love to see Tino & Bunny in the pool! If I wasnt in a condo I would DEFINITELY get them a kiddie pool! Hopefully by next summer they will at least have a little one for them! |
A kiddie pool is a good idea. I think I'll get one so that Saffron can "practice swim" when she's not in the big one. I think she's definitely going to be a "water baby"....which is good as we're having a heat wave this week! :) |
2 Attachment(s) Yep, like natalie said, we have a pool and the yorkes love it, Hefner the most, although Chai has been jumping in on her own a lot lately. Hefner likes to play Captain of the float and has many adventures on his seaworthy craft! I have a life jacket and a skamper ramp and I train them to swim to the step or to the ramp from wherever they are in the pool so that if they were ever to fall in when no one was around, they would not panic and would know how to get out. Here are some pictures: |
5 Attachment(s) Here are some more Pool Adventure pictures! |
Kim, I LOVE the photos of your babies in the pool! They look like they're having a blast! Thanks so much for posting them! Not to be greedy :D (but I am),I'd love to see more furbabies in the pool photos. They're just so cute! What a great idea..."the ramp"! Do you know where I can find one? If not I'll check online. Although my pool is above ground, it has regular stairs, not a ladder so I could hook the ramp to it. Marty |
Sully swims too (not sure how much he likes it, though, haha!) 2 Attachment(s) I don't have any tips, really....but I wanted to say that Sully swims too...in hotel pools when we can get away with it, haha! He doesn't like it much - I'm sure he'd do much better with a life jacket on :) But anyway, my husband and I thought it was funny to take pictures of him in the pool with us @ a hotel in N.C.... And I'm a professional swim teacher (6 years experience, certified), so found it quite amusing to give my dog one of my "swimming lessons" Haha! |
:D LOVE the pictures of Sully in the pool! Looks like quite a little swimmer! Marty |
Thanks, Marty! :) He is a good swimmer....and he's only had one "lesson"! (haha). He got in at the park the other day, into the creek there, trying to catch the ducks. It was really funny. When I get home from work tonight I'll upload the video we took of Sully in the pool. It's a riot! |
No Pebbles does not go into the pool and I also dont even have a pool!:) |
What great pics of your babies in the pool!!!! My sister-in-law has a pool and I can't wait to take him over and see what he does!!!! It'll be interesting since he HATES his bath!!! |
Here, here! I now have the little video of poor scared Sully swimming in the hotel swimming pool last month! To view it, click here: http://www.jusspress.com/day.php?use...entTime=065320 Let me know what you think! Hehe. My husband and I were SO amused. (My husband is in the video, I am the one holding the camera.) |
That video was too cool! Thanks for that! You can get the skamper ramp at skamper-ramp.com. |
All my yorkies over the years have loved to swim. On another forum someone posted that they bought a pair of "arm floats" that little kids use and they put them on their dog and it worked out fine in pool. But never leave them by themselves... |
LUV the video of Sully!! I bought bailey a kiddy pool...for his Birthday!! I put him in,,he jumps out! In ~~~~~OUT~~ Do ya think he'll ever like it...?? Or am I wasting my time?! |
Ooooo, we need the scamper ramp. Can you tell me where you found this? Thanks! Deb |
Your pool looks beautiful SoCal....no wonder the dogs love it so much...lol, I want to jump in..lol |
Awww so cute Loved the pictures of your babies....I want to try Louie in the pool soon. I hope he likes it! :aimeeyork |

I booked marked this site when someone posted about the ramp....in fact since we are opening our pool this weekend I am going to go order one too!! http://skamper-ramp.com/default2.htm |
Sully in the pool Your Sully is the most adventuresome Yorkie I have ever seen! LOL :) Wasn't he the dog that was chasing the chickens on the ranch a couple weeks ago? Love the video by the way.... |
I am going to order one, too! I am thinking about getting a little kiddie pool to see if it encourages the babies to like the pool - they dont now. We try not to scare them, and to teach them to swim to the steps, but they dont want to be in the water. They hate baths, too. Has anyone 'taught' their dog to like the water, or does it seem to come naturally or not? |

I just found them cheaper even when you add shipping from a ebay store http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW |
Maggie has a wading pool. She will wade, but too lazy to swim. She actually prefers to lay in the driveway with the water hose running. Her breeder told us they don't like to get wet!!!! Well, I guess Maggie wasn't listening, when that trait was handed out. |
