Please pray for Fitzgerald Hey everyone, I joined this forum a few weeks ago with my 4-month-old Morkie. He was doing great until recently. We noticed over the past few days he has had very dark poop and has been acting sluggish and tired all day, and also had a wet cough. We brought him to the vet, and it turns out he is extremely anemic, and the dark poop is caused by digested blood. His red cell count is 16%, which the vet told me is HALF of what it should be. He said if it falls any lower, he will need a blood transfusion :( The vet said it's commonly caused by hookworms or fleas, but he could not find anything on him or in him. He gave us iron supplement and anti-biotics, as well as treatment for worms in case he has them. We are worried sick because we don't have any idea why he's anemic, and we are just bracing ourselves for the worst  Please keep our Fitzy in your prayers tonight, and if anyone could offer some words of wisdom based on experience, we'd appreciate that. |
Awwww, sending your baby all my prayers. I hope he's back to normal and feeling well soon! |
Oh no! I hope someone has some advice for you. Both of you will be in our prayers. Hugs from Texas! |
ahhh poor baby, sending prayers to you, i sure hope he is better soon:( |
Sending warm wishes to Fitz. Good to hear you saw the vet and he is also on worm medication. I have yet to have a poop specimen show worms. The only true test for me is that I examine and smell my pup's poop every time they go. Dontral Plus is very effective for all forms of those nasty worms. Will watch for good news on his next visit. Sounds like you have a very good vet. |
Ahhhh...poor little Fitzgerald. I will pray for him and you! Bless your hearts. It sounds like your vet has all the bases covered with the meds he has given him. I do think you will have a good outcome and he'll be feeling good again in no time, but I also know what a worry it is until they are feeling better. Big hugs to you! |
Prayers for your little Fitzgerald.... |
Poor little Fitzy...I have no experience with this issue, but you will most certainly be in my thoughts! |
Aw poor baby, lots of prayers coming your way. There are different forms of anemia, atleast in humans, i'm not sure about puppies. Did the doctor go into specifics or talk about supplements. I have pernicious anemia, which is a lack of B12, i take supplements everyday and i'm fine. Do some research and next time you talk to the doctor ask him lots of questions! Good Luck and prayers for little Fitzgerald! |
hope today is better I hope little Fitz is feeling better. Please keep us posted on your baby's health!:) |
Praying that Fitz is better soon!!:) |
I will keep Fitzgerald in my prayers. I am so very sorry that he is sick. Sending get well quick hugs :ghug: |

Prayers being sent for Fritzy (and for you, too)! |

:getwellso :getwell: :big_hug: |
Thanks for the good thoughts everyone... We brought him to the vet this morning and got the call at 11 a.m. that Fitzy likely has a liver shunt that's genetic. His blood level was even lower today, and the vet told us he might not make it another few days. :( We then had the dog transfered to the vet that our pet store tells us to use. We wanted that vet to confirm his diagnosis so the store would replace the dog, as per the warranty. And then we would have to put Fitzy to sleep... Me and my fiancee cried all day. Then, at 4:30, we got a call from THIS vet, saying that they want to keep him overnight and do more tests, because he seems stable and his anemia could be a reaction to the vaccinations he had last Friday... So, at the end of the day, there's this thin, thin ray of hope that our baby is going to get through this. We don't want to lose our puppy :( :( |
So glad you got a second opinion and hopefully the first vet was wrong. Please keep us updated. |
Get well soon I hope for the best! :( OMG I am so so sorry for you and your puppy!!! Lots of prayers coming your way!!! I am also glad you got another opinion. I hope your baby gets better soon!!!!:xfingers: |

Poor Fitzy!!!! He'll definitely be in my thoughts tonight! |
Prayers are coming your way. Poor little Fitzy, and you both. Let's hope the vet is right and that ray of hope turns into sunshine. |
Please get well soon Fitzy!!! Will most certainly say a prayer for him, and you. Grab on to that ray of hope...get the transfusion if needed, then continue to search for the answer to your prayers. He and you both need strength. Bless his little heart!!! |
I hope that is the answer for you. Sending Fritz warm thoughts and look forward to tomorrow's post for good news. |
i hate to even think of this... but please consider that the pet store may not be wanting you to replace the puppy. they would lose whatever profit they may have made from the sale of your new one. and so the vet they have hired would do what's necessary to keep your li'l loved one alive until the contract expires on his health. do they offer a year guarantee on genetic issues? when did you purchase your pup? i know that i'm being somewhat cynical here but i hope they're looking out for your pup's best interest and not their bottom line, as so many do. found this link about vaccination induced anemia you should read through. i don't recall it saying anything about dark stools....but i'm certainly not an expert. http://www.gcvs.com/internists/imha.htm he might be anemic since he's losing some blood through his stool? perhaps he got into something that perforated his insides a bit? as for liver shunt, i've heard that vets can run a bile acid test to check for that but that it's not a guaranteed diagnostic tool. i sincerely hope that all goes well for you and your fiance as you help your tiny loved one through this difficult time. be well :aimeeyork |
Prayers are on your way!!!:hands: |
