My yorkie had a seizure I am so happy to find this site. My yorkie had a seizure yesterday. He had infection and by the time I got him to the vet he suffered his first and I pray last seizure. My son was home when it happened and raced him to the vet. He said he had convulsions and his head was so constricted it looked like his neck was broken. Needless to say I am so upset and my son is also. The doctor ran a battery of blood and urine tests and said all she can come up with is that his infection triggered this. He is 7 years old. Anyway today he is still week and does not want to eat or drink. I have been feeding him chicken broth with a syringe. The animal hospital said this would help. Is this normal that he will not eat or drink the day after his seizure? If anyone can answer I would greatly appreciate it. When we called the vet today she didn't act like it was unusual. She administered a shot of antibiotic yesterday and sent some amoxcillan home with him. Thanks for any info! |
I am sorry that you and your baby suffered through this. I hope he starts feeling better. I really don't have any answers, just wanted to let you know that you and Buddy are in our thoughts. Feel better Buddy! Thea and Roxee:aimeeyork |
Buddies Mommy I am sorry your Buddy is sick. Hopefully it will be taken care of with the meds. I am glad your son was home when it happened. I hope someone can give you additional information to help relieve your worries. I just want to wish him a speedy recovery. Perhaps some boiled chicken and rice might entice him to eat something. Keep us informed. Hugs to your Buddy from mine, |
Yes. It is normal that he may not be that interested in food today after yesterday's ordeal. Important though that he not dehydrate, especially if he is still battling an infection. How big is your Buddie? |
Thank you so much for your reply! Buddy is 5.6 pounds. It seems like he is coming out of this a little better. I am just so scared right now. He is drinking the broth well with the syringe. |
Thank you so much! I am so relieved to have found your site! |
poor poor baby wow, very sad and heart wrenching. Did they run any liver tests? Mine had seizures from hypoglycemia where kayro syrup rubbed on gums will bring him right out and seizures avoided all together with frequent mini meals just like humans. I had mine tested for liver with bile acid test inexpensive and I believe a must for EVERY yorkie. Check gums often if they are white/grey/blue....get food and kayro syrup/nutrical in him immediately. thats all i know about seizures besides epilepsy which there is no test for that. As far as seizures wearing them out, yes! They are exhausted! Do you give him nutrical? I highly recommend that if he is not eating. Please keep us posted on your baby, if you ever need to talk or anything just let us know everyone is here for you and this is a WONDERFUL site for support and info! You can always Private message for help too. ALso people even call others to lend an immediate ear...I know when Diggy was going thru this I was on the horn! Let me know ! Take care Give Buddy kisses! |

Thank you so much! I told my husband that this is a miracle I found this site. I have stressed so much since yesterday. I will keep you posted once I learn how to post. I think I am doing a reply correct and do hope you get this. Thanks so much. |
A former BF had a Yorkie several years ago that had been rehomed because the original owner abused him. (KICKED HIM:eek: which caused brain injury and subsequent occasional seizures. Had a Yorkie living outside in a pen!) He was a sweet little guy:aimeeyork and those seizures were horrible to watch. He was on meds off and on to control them. Sounds like either the infection itself or an accompanying fever may have attacked the brain. Make sure you get all his meds down him so he can get it cleared up. Also, would be wise to have him checked for hypoglycemia. If he isn't willingly eating or at least trying to eat by tomorrow, I'd call the vet. Especially since he needs to get his meds and keep them down. Good luck! |
The blood tests showed nothing that would cause this seizure. I am also thinking that the infection has caused this. I will definitely bring him to the vet tomorrow. I so appreciate you responding! |
yep your doing it right....I was the same exact way you are! There is NOTHING liek having a puppy seizure in front of you. I still get paranoid when he makes any kind of a strange sound! my name is Paula by the way...Paranoid Paula lol there is another Paranoid Paula in here I am sure she will post here for ya when she gets on....I turned to this site many many many nights. Crying, shaking, and then a nice person offered me her #, I called right away and we talked for about an hour....She just listened to all my rambling ?'s (10 times over lol) I felt sooo much better. I mean the vet helped but its just so reassuring to have someone who actually understands how special EVERY YORKIE is....True little :angelyork . And not think your completely nuts when you say....Id do ANYTHING for this fur baby! ;) How is he doing right now? Did you get to stay home with him today? |
Yes I work here at home so I get to be with him basically 24/7. I am going to get him right back to the vet tomorrow if I don't see a big improvement. This dog is family to me in so many ways. I told my husband to see him in such bad shape and to see my son who is 25 cry like a baby because he was here when the seizure happened the vet is going to be drove crazy by us for awhile I am sure! This dog is so loved and we are all praying that he recovers completely. Thank you so much for replying to me. It is a blessing to find this site today. God bless you! |
Well, hopefully your baby will be better very soon. And Yorkie Talk can be the silver lining in your cloud. :D I know it was for me. Stumbled across the site a few months ago when my pups (I say pup but he is almost 10:p ) was very ill for the second time in about 4 months. You should post some pix of your boy. YTers LOVE photos.:D |
Hopefully he is doing much better. You will love this place so many caring and knowledgable people here. |
Thank you so much! I can tell that everyone here understands how upset that I am seeing my baby so sick. I feel better just finding you guys. I needed to talk to people who understand how important Buddy is to me. Thanks again. |
poor poor baby No problem at all, and yes this site is a blessing. If you can get some Nutrical Most pet stores even Meijer carries it. He will get all the nutrience (sp?) he needs from it while his appetite isnt up to par. My kids went out of their minds when Diggy seized to. I feel for your son having to see it. AWFUL! I can think back to it (3 weeks ago) and still get choked up. He was so pitiful and it always happened in middle of night or early morning when everything was closed and everyone was sleeping so i was alone. What time of day did he have his seizure? |
The other paranoid Paula here! Welcome to YT. I see you are a fellow Hoosier! I hope Buddy is improving. Ask all the questions you want, there are some very smart people with many years of yorkie experience on this board. I have a 3 yr old yorkie, Otis, that has developed some liver issues in the last month. I was a hot mess when he started having symptoms. Yorkietalk helped me sooooo much. Get well soon Buddy, keep us updated. |
It happened around 8:30 yesterday morning. I had just stepped out and my son was with him. My poor son who is 25 years old cried like a baby. Fortunately my sister who lives next door was able to transport Buddy and my son to the vet. When I arrived he had came out of most of the seizure but today he is very weak and seems like he isn't hungry. I just called the vet and told her I will be back tomorrow morning unless I see a great improvement in him. All kinds of tests came back fine so I think it is infection. The vet said infection showed in the bladder test. He is taking antibiotic but I can see he will not bounce back quickly. This is such a shock to me. We just never dreamed he would have anything like this happen. Thanks for caring. I feel I have made some friends today on here. It is comforting. I am so happy I found you guys |

Hope you guys stay nice to me even though I am a Wolverine!!! ;) |
You sure did tell me she would jump on here. I see you 2 are great buddies! Thanks to both of you for comforting me today. |
Food Is he eating anything yet?? Diggy ate chicken, scrambled egg, and rice well. I substituted Chicken with ground turkey and ground sirloin. Try cheerios, corn flakes, or any kind of fruit besides grapes. Baby carrots and green beans went over well along with baby food like sweet potatoes, chicken, and turkey. Thats all my lil stinker would eat for 3 weeks. :p |
Hi fellow hoosier! It is such a relief to meet up with eveyone today. I feel a weight lifted since finding this site. I am so grateful. I will definitely keep in touch with everyone. I am less scared since reading the threads. Thanks to everyone on here I feel stronger. |
No he is not eating yet. Yesterday when I first brought him home he drank alot of water. He also ate a little bit. I am going to try some of these things you said and see if he will eat them. All he is doing is drinking chicken broth with the syringe that came with his antibiotic. I am going to the kitchen and whipping up some scrambled eggs to see if he would eat that. Thanks! |
Good luck with the eggs! Let us know if he eats! :aimeeyork |
If his bladder infection was bad enough, he could've gotten septic. You may already know this, but that's when the infection goes into your blood. It's a serious infection and can cause odd behavior, but I'm not sure about seizures. I could be way off here, but hopefully the medicine will kick in after a couple days and he'll be good as new. He's probably not eating much because he doesn't feel good. Don't worry, just try to find something he will eat and keep him hydrated. Whatever it is, it's probably not unusual for it to take a few days to feel better. Hang in there!!:) |
Hey Diggy! I got him to eat a couple of crackers that I dipped in the chicken broth. He always did like crackers. Within a minute he took a drink of water from his bowl. I am so relieved. Before I tried the eggs I thought he might eat crackers. My husband who works second shift was so relieved to see him eat something. We have all cried about him being so sick. My husband had a newfoundland dog when I met him and never cared for small dogs but Buddy has won his heart. He slept on the floor last night when he got home so he make sure buddy wouldn't fall out of the bed. Thanks to you for being a friend today. I hope to stay in touch with every single person. I had to let you know he ate! |
Paula he ate some crackers with the chicken broth just a few minutes ago! I think maybe he is getting back on track. What a relief. I know my son will be thrilled when he hears this. My husband was so relieved to see him eat. He works second shift and he seemed much less worried when he saw Buddy eating. Hopefully we is going to get back to normal. He usually has such an attitude. We all miss that! |
Great! Great news! Anything you can get him to eat is great! (within reason) lol I hope he continues to perk up! I just kept offering Diggy anything and everything all the time. It is always encouraging to see them eat! Sounds like he is on his way up! Oh the reason I asked what time of the day he had his seizure was Diggy had his after not eating through the night and his blood sugar dropped! I had no idea what I was dealing with and had a lot of tests ran before we figured out what it was. I thought I was dealing with a liver condition. Ended up not to be :D |
Hi there! Glad your baby is eating a little cracker anyway! First let me say we all understand and we are here for you;) As for seizures, my Lexxi had seizures, cluster seizures, meaning she didn't stop! Almost always resulted in hospitalization :( But I always read and was told, that having a seizure was like us running a marathon-it takes that much out of them. They generally are very thirsty and hungry afterwards, so  But with your baby having something else going on, an infections, it could be that he simply doesnt feel good... I think the nutrical is a good idea, or karo syrup will do the trick. Also, right after a seizure, when they can safely swallow, (tho hopefully this was a fluke and you'll never have to deal with this again!) it is good to give them a small amount of all natural vanilla ice cream! Like Bryers. This boosts their sugar but the fat in the ice cream makes it so the sugar releases slowly-no sugar high and then a low. Again, there are some great suggestions already for food....I might try liverwurst too. I never even knew what it was till a couple weeks ago :p But I swear to you its been a life saver in my house!!! I have some finicky eaters here, and so far, this has worked every single time! I'm out of it right now and Vixxen won't eat...she's in one of her moods so I'm off to the store to get some!! It's magic! Anyway, wishing your Buddy a speedy recovery and NO MORE SEIZURES!! They are the worst...for his family moreso than him I think. Remember, a seizure doesn't hurt when they have one - but you should be sure they can't konk their head on something hard, or tile floor or what have you..... We're here if you need anything! Trina |
