yorkie terrified of storms? Anyone here have a yorkie terrified of storms? We've had thunder the last week or so and or Tykie is a mess. Right now I am trying to type as he is in my arms shaking, panting, etc. Bubba doesn't mind them...he even barks at the thunder :p but Tyke gets so terrified of them that sometimes he can't even walk he gets so worked up....what do you do to try to calm your dog's fears? i feel so bad for my tykie :( |
thankfully not my liitle girl. She sat outside with me last thunderstorm! But then our house is just as loud!!! |
First you should unplug the computer during a storm. Next, don't cuddle and re-enforce the fear. Make it a fun time with treats, and toys. Act like there is no noise. Have some Rescue Remedy on hand and give 4 drops about 45 minutes before the storm gets to you. It's all natural and not harmful at all. |
Well, since only one of yours is afraid, I'm sure it's nothing you've done to enhance his fears. Not that anyone intentionally does that but like with our kids, I've always talked about how much I love the thunder and lightening and we've sat and watched it. I think if you play up to their fears and really coddle them, they tend to be more sensitive to their fears. Now, with dogs, I've done the same with Tatum..... not acted scared and actually shown her the lightening and gotten excited to where she thinks Mommy likes it. Who knows.... maybe it works, maybe mine (skin and fur) just aren't afraid of it. I would try acting real positive during a storm and talking real gentle while watching the rain...... might help. |
Poor Tykie, I don't know what you could do other than just trying to soothe him. Sounds like you are already doing that. Maybe call the Vet or a behaviorist to see if they have any idea's. Maybe you could look and see if there is anything about being scared of thunderstorms online for suggestions. Sorry I'm not more help. Good Luck. Hope he relaxes soon. |

A friend of mine has to give her baby sedatives.....she gets so stressed her blood sugar drops she shakes gets cold and lethargic....its crazy! None of mine are scared so not sure what advice to give.....I do wish you luck!!! |

My Sir. Galahad is scared to death of them too, he's a nervous Yorkie, don't ask me why but he is...ANY loud noises scares him to death, he is one from our 1st litter, his daddy Teddy is somewhat scared of noises too but not as bad as Galahad...I honestly think if he went to live somewhere else he'd die!!!!!! No one is use to him the way I am, he prances all the time like he's in a show ring, the way those babies prance when being shown well this is his way of walking all the time. I just hold him and tell him it's okay or try to turn the tv up to cover it. He is very protective too of our house and anyone who comes in, my sister came to visit earlier and rang the door bell on and on he HATES her now, she comes in he's at her heals, snappin' at her, my grandaughter comes he's playing with her. My sis says why don't he like me, I said well silly U scared the poop out of him and now all he sees U as is a big ol'd door bell!!!!! LOL! I call him killer sometimes cause he acts like he's gonna eat people up. Hope he gets better. Hugs, Lee & Babies |
Phoebi has a terrible time with thunderstorms and fireworks. I have a sedative the Vet gave me but by the time the storm starts it's already too late to give her the pill. We've found a "safe spot" for her. It's under one of my living room end tables. She can manage if she's there....the shaking and drooling is at a minimum. We had tried everything to desensitize her. Playing CD's of thunder...starting out low and then going louder. Trying to distract her....almost impossible. So the safe spot is our best bet around here. |
I would advise to do what Yorkiedaze said, ignore the thunder and make it as much fun as possible. |
Maybe try turning on some music or tv to distract her? we dont really have any loud enough storms here where you can hear it indoors so i dont know if princess would get scared or not.. |
This is probably not the best advice, but I've read that the condition is genetic and there's nothing you can do about it. Some Yorkies are just afraid of thunder. Eddie is terrified of thunder and fireworks. The best I've been able to do is distract him. |
I think Yorkiedaze hit the nail on the head. In Toto's case, she had never been afraid of thunder/lightening in her life. We were having dinner with some friend's one night when a storm suddenly came up. Karen immediately reached for Toto and began telling her "come to Aunt Karen, I know you're scared of that old storm!!" Truth was, Aunt Karen was terrified and she traumatized my baby! :) It took us about 1 1/2 to 2 years to get Toto back to her brave little self and ignore that old thunder monster!! She pretty much ignores storms now and, if she even acknowledges really bright lightening, she may give a little bark at the patio door like she's saying, "c'mon, you want a piece of me???" :p We simply don't make a big deal of it and remain calm ourselves and it seems to put her at ease!! ;) There is nothing more pitiful than a little one who is inconsolable. |
