Scooting around on his behind I did a search and found that this is a sign of his anal glands needing to be released. But before I take him in, I was wondering could it be anything else? He doesn't do it very much like 2 times on sunday, once or twice before that and then once this morining. Can they go away on their own? And who do you recomend going to? Vet? Groomer? He is only 10 weeks old, does that matter? TIA (Thanks In Advance) |
Okay Meg, lets see what fits. Has he been wormed? Has he had his second set of shots? If no to either one, then the vet can check for worms and stopped up anal glands. The majority of the time, the dog will expel the gland when they go poo. Sometimes the gland does get clogged, causing the bottom to itch. They will drag their bottoms, trying to expel the clog. Your baby won't be able to go to the groomer until he has all his shots and kennel cough vaccination. When he is old enough, the groomer will check the gland and expel if needed. In the meantime, I would have the vet check him out. |
When I first got Annie I had read a bunch of books and I read that when the scoot on their behinds that it meant they needed to have their anal glands expressed. So the next time we went to the vet I asked him to show me how to do it. But he said just wash her tushy , she just didn't get "a clean poop" So I payed attention the next few times she would be scooting her behind on the ground. And low and behold, she had a loose stool and got some stuck in the hair and was trying to wipe it clean on the foor. Yes our little furbabies like to be clean too :D So I would just wash her behind for her and that seemed to solve the problem. She is a year old now and I have never had to have her anal glands expressed... So maybe just keep look out for that :) |

We took him to the Vet on friday, just to get a check up before the 72 hours were up on the contract with the breeder. They checked him for worms and that came out clean, and he is totally updated on his shots. He has another apointment in 2 1/2 weeks for his next set. He has had somewhat soft poops, but not runny. I'll try the washing thing and then if he keeps it up I'll call the vet. Would she have checked that on friday when we went in? Or is that something they only check if it is brought up? You guys are so awesome! Thanks for your quick and knowledged replies! :D |

Anal gland expression can be an easy thing done by your vet and they might even help clipping the hair around the bottom area for you to... ;) |
They might have not checked it, unless you brought it up. I would just wash the area with some warm water and shampoo if you notice him doing it again for now. And then the next time you go to the vet just bring it up and see what they say :) |
Everyone already said what I would have said. When you do clip that area, make sure you don't get too close and NEVER touch the anal area with your cutting instrument. I am a bit surprised the worm check came up negative (only becuase of the scooting). As far as loose stool goes, did you change him from the food that the previous owner was feeding him? If he has teeth, don't be tempted to give him the canned dog food (causes loose stool). Good luck and let us know what it ends up being or if it just goes away. I am curious now that it doesn't seem to be either thing (almost always is one of the two). |
Most of the time when they have already been scooting around on thier butt they have already released the glands. In our salon you have to ask for the glands to be done. |
I do NOT recommend getting their glads expressed. Angel had hers done (and I did NOT ask them to do it) and ever since then she hasn't been the same. Her hind parts stick out so far I can pinch the sides of it. It's like her insides are on her outside (and this was done a month and a half ago). When it first happened, I called the vet. She said to take my finger and push it back inside her. I tried over and over again. It just didn't work. It's not something she even needed to have done. I don't plan on taking my babies toa grromer without saying "HEY, STAY AWAY FROM HER HINEY!!!!" |
The infamous butt-scoot My dog seems to be prone to anal gland irritation. About once a month she acts like pooping is uncomfortable and then starts doing the butt-scoot. When she starts showing these signs I expell her glands and all is well. I would hope that you vet would have noticed but I have had to ask before. The vet expelled them for me once and taught me how so that I could do it myself (they charge $15 to do it for you). If this does end up being the problem...see if your vet will teach you. |

I TOTALLY agree, don't let them express the glands just to see if it makes the scooting stop. Once you do, you are more prone to HAVE TO. Like the old saying goes "If it aint broke, don't fix it". Thank God I have never had to do this regardless of the breed! Maybe you should take another stoole sample. |
