Who has had a tiny girl spayed? Willow is going to be spayed soon and I am terrified. She is 6 months and still under 2 pounds so I was going to try and wait until she was a little bigger maybe around 8 months. Well, she has not lost one baby tooth! So when I saw that she had her adults coming in, canines and all, I figured I couldn't wait much longer to get her spayed and teeth done all at once. It will make me feel better if I could hear some successful spaying stories on tiny girls.....did you have any problems? Is there a certain anesthesia that is safer for tinies? (I think I've read something about that from somewhere...wish I could remember) Thanks! |
Just make sure your vet uses Isoflourin or Sevofluorine, those are the anesthesias that are safe for small dogs. I'm sure everything will be fine. You and Willow will be in my thoughts! |

Erin - You and Willow will definitely be in our prayers. Please keep us posted. Brenda |
You know, I wasn't overly concerned when I had Tatum spayed - I think she may have been between 2 and 3 lbs at the time - BUT after meeting your little Willow this past weekend, I don't blame you at all..... she is such a TINY little thing! I trust my vet completely - he was also my toy poodle's vet for 15 years - so if he said she'd be fine, I believed him. I don't know what kind of relationship you have with your vet though..... what does he suggest? |
Hey Erin, did you notice this thread........ http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81465 Maybe ya'll could compare notes since this little boy is tiny like Willow.... |
1 Attachment(s) I had my little girl spayed (2.11 ounces) and she did just fine. |
Who has had a tiny girl spayed? Gracie's vet specializes in toy dogs and she suggested that we wait until Gracie was 10 mos. to spay her, which we did. She did not have a heat cycle prior to spaying. She was not quite 3 lbs at 10 mos. and did fine. She was a "late bloomer" as she continued to grow until nearly 2 years old--she's now just under 5 lbs. (although her vet would like her a half pound lighter...lol) |
She should be on an IV during the procedure. It reduces the trauma of the drugs for sedation and the trauma of the surgery and teeth removal. It will help keep her up and hydrated as well. |

My maltese was spayed when she was 2.9lbs, which is pretty tiny, but your little girl is Super tiny!! Maybe you could wait another month or so. Make sure they only use gas anesthesia and no injectable anesthesia. They wake up much quicker from the gas... |
Thanks for all of the support and comfort guys! Do you think I should wait even though her teeth are coming in so fast? I wanted to wait originally, but then the teeth scared me...she hasn't lost any teeth at all yet and almost all of the front teeth, including canines, are half way in already. The vet I take her to by our apartment in Houston had no hesitations about spaying her now, but I am taking her to a vet in League City (about 30 minutes south) that I have know for a long time who took care of my family's dogs....they haven't seen her before.....but they are much, much cheaper than the vet we usually take her to. And I trust these ladies since I have known them longer.... thanks again for the support and advice! |

Did your vet by chance say that smaller females usually go into their first heat later? |
