one huge Yorkie litter.. After surfing just about every website I could find tonight, I finally came apon yours, where I had the option to ask my question burning holes into every book/information I ever read on the amount of puppies a Yorkie is expected to whelp. I wouldn't consider myself a breeder, but I did take my time, effort, research when I decided to buy my male (5 yrs ago) and female (2 yrs ago) Yorkie (Both KUSA).. and finally the 1st litter arrived a week ago. My baby girl was in labour for over 6 hours and had finally produced 10 babies (2 sets of twins!!), one didn't make it through the night - and now we are proud as punch of our 9.. Every literature I have ever read about Yorkies led me to believe that they only produced 1 - 4 puppies as the norm. My Vet and myself are astonished ofcourse and would like to know if anyone else has experienced similar high amounts of puppies per litter?? Any replies would be appreciated..thank you JAQI:animal-pa |
congratulations on yourlitter. Never heard on one that large. How can you tell if they are twins/ Two of my girls produce five each time and two, only two. Those are the two I have had to have spayed with c-sections. |
First, welcome to YT. Second, congrats on the new pups. I'm not a breeder. Never bred a dog before so I'm not really sure. But an average sized yorkie normally have an average of 4 pups. |
Congratulations! Can I ask how much both the parents weigh and how much each pup weighs? |
wow 10 puppies:eek:  Momma must be a trooper lol! congrats on your new babies sorry you lost one. I was also curious what the weight of the mom, dad and babies were can't wait to see pics!! |
Wow! Welcome and can't wait to see pictures! |
Ten Puppies? Welcome to YT! Congratulations on your new little ones. Sorry about the one you lost. Wow! That really is a big litter. I too am curious to see how big the parents and the puppies are. Pictures would be nice, too! We love pictures! ;) |
my goodness! what a great mommy she must be :) As you have probably noticed, us at YT are obsessed with pictures lol :P |
Your house will be really exciting in the coming months! :D |
10  I have never heard of a yorkie having that many.. Oh, yea Congrats!!! |
Congratulations! I've never bred dogs so this may seem like a dumb question....how do you know that there are twins? Can't wait to see some pics! |
Were your "twins" sharing a placenta/sack? Best of luck with your babies and give that momma a great big hug :bighug: . I'm so sorry to hear you lost one.of the pups. Are you supplementing the feeding to help mom out? That's a lot of babies for her to feed. |
I want to know about the twins too. Can't wait to see pictures. How big are the parents? I have never heard of the standard having that many at one time. |
Congratulations on your large litter. The most i have had was 6 and lost a tiny one in that litter also. I own twins too so congrats on the twins. Watch the momma for calcium defienciency because that is alot of babies to feed. Cant wait to see pics of your new babies. |
Holy Yorkie!!!!:2omg: 10 babies!!!!!:fainted: That gotta be a new record for a yorkie litter... CONGRATULATIONS!!!! And Welcome to YT!!! Post pics of the babies!!!!:ghug: |
WOWSERS!! My Tink came from a litter of 8. All had to be bottle fed as the mom got eclampsia. But they all turned out just fine and dandy! Congrats! |
well the first question to ask is how big is your yorkie? the standard is no more than 7 lbs so if she is 7 or less lbs, then i think that holds a record. if she is larger, i still think that might hold a record. the most i have ever heard of was 7 and the female was 15lbs. my little girl had 5 then 3 and she is 8lbs (retired). welcome to yorkie talk. we cannot wait to see the babies. |
WOWZA! Congrats on all the babies and I'm glad Momma made it through the pregnancy and birth okay:D You are going to be one busy Grandma in the coming weeks:animal36 |
Wow Good for you :) Doubt if I could do what your doing. Can't wait to see your new babies; |
Lots of Puppies I have never heard of a Yorkshire Terrier having 10- puppies!!!!! Wow you must check with the vet and make sure you mom does not get eclampsia, it is a calcium deficiency, that will kill your mother if you do not keep a watchful eye on her. She will get nervous, stiff legged, and go in to seizers, you must get her to the Vet within the hour or you can loose her, he will put her on a calcium drip, and you will have to bottle raise the babies. If that happens, you can still let the mom and babies stay together, i just take one of my push down exercise socks cut the foot off, and it makes a nice long tube for the mother to cover her nipples, then she can still be with her babies and clean them, and sleep with them, if you run into eclampsia. I had a mom who had 7, she got eclampsia before the puppies were born, i had to hand raise all 7, 6 boys and one girl, all weighing about 2 /2 oz. to 3 1/2 oz. So we are glad you are on yorkie talk, you will get a lot of support, and please keep us posted as to how everyone is doing. Also would love to know how much the mother weighs, and the dad, and of course the puppies. You are really going to have your hands full!!!! Best of luck with all, and so sorry you lost one. Also make sure you mother has lots of calcium, a Tums, every day, cottage cheese, goats milk, she is going to have to really be on a good diet to take care of all those babies and not get eclampsia. Never let her run low on food or water or goats milk. The Tums will help keep her calcium numbers up,and should keep her from getting eclampsia. |
Welcome & Congratulations! Can't wait to see pictures! :wavey: :congrats: :jump28ib: |
Congrats and holy cow! And welcome! The breeders on this board are great - they will have sound advice and are very supportive, so don't be hesitant to reach out. But, TEN? Unreal. Is the momma okay? I wonder if she'll have the capacity to feed them all herself (breeders?)? You need to hire a nanny! |
OK.......me too.......WOW!! I do understand the "twins" because it happened to a YT member before. However, 7 is the most in a litter I am closely familiar with (sadly there were complications during labor and 5 didn't make it.....the healthiest ones:( ). Please keep a close eye on your little Mamma. That is sure to take a toll on her body. I am DEFINETLY looking forward to an update....sure hope you jump back on here and become a permanent member:) . |
litter of 9 pups I remembered this post from a year ago when I saw this post. Followed it for a long time. Love reading posts about the babies and the pics.:) (not sure why i couldn't get a link to it but you can search for posts by mama_lexee, i think it was her first post too.) mama_lexee05-08-2006, 01:41 PM My yorkie had 9 pups wed and I am worried about the mom. She is not acting normal. She is breathing funny when she nurses, and ignores me sometimes (she never does that). I have taken her to the vet and she says everything is fine but I know she doesn't feel good. The vet told me not to give her turkey, which she loves and since the puppies were born she has been eating pro plan selects puppy food. I am curious about wether she needs any other vitamin supplements. Can anyone help? |
Wow, 10 babies! CONGRATS! :D |
Congrats and ya wow.A lady who breeds yorkies here had a litter of 8 2 years ago all dies but 2,they looked like little sausages.. I just had a litter of 6 and it definatly takes a toll on momma. Definatly a calcium supplement for her I would say,and lots of good food. Good luck with your little ones and would love to see a pic of them. My female weighed 6 1/2 pounds before gestation and 11 pounds right before whelping. Did you know you were expecting that big of a litter. I had twin girls last time one placenta two cords attached to it,both came out right after the other and one sack. |
Wow, I would love to see 10 little ones!! How big is the mother? I wish I could be around a litter like that!! It will be so much fun for you!!;) ;) |
Welcome to YorkieTalk and congratulations . With a litter like that , it would be a very good idea to help the mother . |
10 sounds like a lot for a yorkie. But our female bluetick Beagle CJ had a litter of 9 pups 2 years ago. CJ is a smaller beagle 8lbs. When she had her 9 litter one didn't make it at birth after much trying and another one who was "my baby" died after 4 weeks. Poor little Shammy just wouldn't grow. But anyhow, I am curoius to know how they are doing . I know CJ was great with them but their were the "big boys" who constantly got the most milk. Would love to see a pic! |
