What made you choose a boy or girl Yorkie? Just out of curiosity! I tried doing a search but it said the words I was using were too common. Oh well. I've seen that a lot of people specify gender when they're searching for a dog, and don't budge; mostly it's female dogs that seem to be in demand. Some people have just had females all their life and want to keep it that way. Others want to dress their dog up in bows and dresses. One girl said that when she was rubbing the dog's belly she didn't want to accidentally rub anything else, LOL! So what made you choose between a boy or a girl? Did you choose based on personality/availability (not really caring about gender) or did you go to the breeder with a specific gender in mind? |
I didn't have a specific gender in mind. I just wanted a HEALTHY yorkie. So, I posted here on YT and a breeder responded that she had a male who was an only pup. She sent me his picture, and I was in love! I don't know how true it is, but alot of people have said that males tend to be more cuddly. Jake is certainly very cuddly and has a wonderful disposition. I would like to get a girl next, but I'd take another boy.:D |
In my experience, and from what I've heard, boys are more attatched to their owners, more of the "lapbaby" personality than females. Thats why I was leaning toward a boy, but it wasn't set in stone. When I went to see the litter, I wanted to see which baby I "clicked" with. There was a girl, and two boys, and I totally fell in love with my baby boy. So I guess I was a combination of the two. I had a gender in mind, but I decided to let personality be the most important factor. |
I got a male first. Our money was tighter and the males were less expensive. We knew when we got hm that we were also going to get a female. One month later we went back and got our female. I chose both of them for their personality and size |
My first 2 Yorkies were males, unneutered, and they both marked in the house alot. So I swicthed to females. I have had 3 females and they seem to pee in the house occassionaly so I don't know if it's really any better but I will stick with females. My female pom never pees in the house so it may be a Yorkie thing. |
My friend got a male yorkie, and was really happy with him and his temperment, so I thought maybe I wanted a boy. Then when I found a breeder I liked, I asked about the difference between her boys and girls, and she said she found that her boys were more affectionate. She said when she walked in the room, it was usually the boys that ran up to her first. Don't get me wrong, I'm not generalizing, I know girls can be affectionate and some boys may not be, but after her saying that I wanted a boy!:) |
My decision was easy... I got one of each. LOL |
I got a male yorkie, and he is the sweetest thing in the world. He never humps or marks in the house. He's 100% potty trained, and he's a total mommy and daddy's boy. If you get a male, you just have to make sure and get him neutered by around 6-7 months so he doesn't learn bad habits :) I honestly think you should pick whoever you fall in love with regardless of gender if you're going to neuter or spay anyway. I have always been partial to boys, but my hubby had always had females. So when we got our maltese, we got a girl, not because we wanted a female necessarily, but because we fell in love with her and she's as sweet as can be. |
I had read up on yorkies for a couple years before getting one. I read that girls are more independent and tend to be more agressive. I was set that I wanted a boy for my first dog as an adult. But you know, I would take a girl if the opportunity presented itself. |
I really wanted a girl but was afraid I couldn't afford to get one since they were more expensive I looked at a couple of boys but just couldn't get past the whole penis touching my arm thing when I picked them up so I waited a little longer and found my little girl now we want to get her a sister:D . |
we have always owned female dogs so it just seemed natural to get a female yorkie.. we didn't want the marking that sometimes comes with male dogs and i wanted to be able to get cute girl clothes :p |
All my life, I have had only female dogs. It was just the way I was raised, my family had only ever had females. Males were said to be aggressive and always humping and marking and who wants that? But then after meeting a couple male dogs although small (I am still reserved about getting a male from a big dog breed) and I found out how sweet they were. So then one day I went to look at a boy and I just instantly fell in love with him (Scampers). He is my little boy, definately a momma's boy, lol!! He is just the sweetest little boy. So after I got him I started to realize that males were more loving and cuddly then the females. And now I have Brownie, who is also just the sweetest little boy ever!! He loves cuddling and is always in my lap!! I love the females I have but they are all more independent and don't like cuddling much while the boys are just little cuddle bugs with sweet personalites. Oh and now aggression or marking or humping with the boys either!! So now I love the male dogs just as much as the females if not more!! I wish I would have known years ago how great the little boys are, I missed out!! As for dressing them up, I do love buying dresses for the girls. But there are also a lot of cute boy outfits as well. And I put bows in either hair, I just stick with boy colors for the boys and girl colors for the girls. So for getting cute outfits to put on them, it equals itself out, you can do it with both boys and girls. |
I also had female dogs growing up so they were my first preference which is why I chose Hokule'a. But since we discovered she has a bad heart murmur the breeder gave me the choice of a replacement pup from a different litter and I fell in love with the male, Kalani. So for now I have the best of both worlds:) Kalani is definitely my 'cuddle-bug', Hoku is more independent and bossy - LOL! |
Growing up we always had female dogs. When I got married I had nothing but male dogs. I always found the females to be somewhat "bitchy" (no point intended) my males seemed less moody. Autumn is the first female I have had in more then 12 years and when and if I get another yorkie it will be another girl!:aimeeyork :aimeeyork |
