The breeder who sold us Gracie told us she would be 5 pounds. She weighs in at 8.2 pounds and does not have an ounce of fat on her. She is beautiful. I do think she is a little long though - she seems longer between the head and tail than most yorkies. Does anyone else have a yorkie who is too long? What is too long? How much space should there be between the head and tail? |
I don't know about too long...BUT Maximus is long and heavier then he would supposedly be...he is 4.5 at almost 16 weeks...lol..and he is growing by the vet visit...he is little but when I buy him an xs shirt it will fit him but be way to short..makes him have a trunk like JLO..he looks so tiny till you get to his RUMP..and then BAM..while a small is too big everywhere else except length..also he is not fat but tall...his mom and dad weren't all that long but we will see.. |
Sammi is 19 inches long from the tip of her nose to the tip of her tail...She is 13 lbs @ 18 months old... and LOL about Maximus!! He's got junk in his trunk like Sammi...2 rumpshaker babies!! |
LOL...it's the truth...I have pictures...lol..I need to post |
My yorkie, Willy, is 13lbs he's 6 now & has been that size for years. I love that he is bigger, he doesn't seem to be a fragile as some of the smaller ones. He is nice & solid, definately no fat on him. Desiree |
9 lb I took Mia to the vet yesterday and she is exactly 9lb on the nose . She is long, but not tall 7 months old. Pierce is 6lb if I place them side by side he looks so tiny next to her. I was able to carry both puppies in a carrier, now it kills my back due to the weight. It does not matter she is so lovable that we adore her to death :luvu: . Everyone spoils her more, than the little guy. Liza Nana to Pierce & Mia :littleang |
Yorkies were originally bred to be 17 lb so those of us with bigger babes have the old fashioned originals I always think :D |

Large Yorkies Not every family wants a small Yorkshire Terrier. Folks with young active children enjoy the sturdiness that a larger dog provides them. The family gets to enjoy all the things that make a yorkie a yorkie without the worry. They are no less a Yorkie in the love and devotion they give. Wnalegria |
Who cares how big they are, THEY ARE ADORABLE! |
WELL.... meet Bailey... 13 pounds also!! I've been telling people he is 9 pounds,, cause thats what he weighed about 3-4 months ago.... And Ive blocked out the extra weight Ive felt over those months.... Like carrying a big bag-o- potatoes! :( ... But,,, WHAT CAN YA DO??? Ya love em... there big,, but then I also think... they are still a VERY SMALL DOG,,compared to most! SO ,,, Love em,, and dont worry about it. |
Larger Yorkies! I love your "YORKIES" they are soooooooo cute :animal-sm Their colouring is BeAuTiFuL :p & i love your Horses too :D |
I too have a giant yorkie. Paisley is 10lbs and all muscle. Her breeder told us that she would only be about 5lbs...man did they get that wrong! I call her my lil "mouth piece" as she is very verbal. Just more to love. |
Love those big yorkies too! |
Large Yorkies :aimeeyork :aimeeyork Your pups are beautiful. I too have a 13.5 lb. male 2yr old Yorkie. He was 3.5 at 14wks. I had no idea he would grow so large. He is a beauty but does look like he is on steroids! The vet said the larger the healthier. Glad to see so many larger Yorkies out there. He is solid for sure. Not like the smaller daintier ones. I find it very strange but he has all his papers. He just looks funny when he plays with his Yorkie friends. Looks just like them but much larger! He is wonderful, full of fun and eager to please. Just love them and continue to enjoy them. Good luck. I have been searching for some time for others who have a larger Yorkie and this is the first wed-site I found that had them. I would love to hear stories about the remarks given to you. I had some beauties. |
Here is what I hear all the time... " Oh that's the biggest Yorkie I have ever seen." He's 11 pounds... Big woop, I say! LOVE HIM!;) |
Your yorkies are both adorable, there's a lot to love. Somehow i have always thought that the bigger yorkies have something about them that's FUN... my friend has a 14 pounder and she's a scream! I LOVE to watch her getting into stuff, she's so funny. |
:idontknow BUT MY YORKIE POO IS 8LBS AND SO IS MY YORKIE. I WOULD MUCH RATHER (NOW) HAVE THE LARGER THAN THE SMALLER. SO YOU SEE....LOTS OF POST OF PEOPLE HAVING LARGER YORKIES.:happyw: :happyw: :cf57: |
1 Attachment(s) Just thought I would add our information to this thread. I have Alfie and Lottie and my mum has Pebbles who wo the largest yorkie competion a few weeks ago as she is 21lbs and 13 years old . She is so funny I will need o get some more pics of her as I keep having to post this one of them altogether. So sorry if you have seen the photo before. |
My little guy is about 8 1/2 or 9 pounds (watch me get him weighed - and he weighs even more!) Anyway - I was prepared. His mother weighed 13 pounds and his father weighed 4 1/2 pounds - go figure! I was told that he would be between 5 and 10 pounds - which he is. I can't believe it - but my Yorkie at 8 1/2 pounds is still a very tiny little dog. I am thrilled to death with his weight. He can get on and off any furniture with no problems whatsoever. I never have to worry about "stepping on him," and he plays well with other dogs and children and isn't a constant worry. Again - he seems "tiny" to me. He has a slight build with fluffy, wavy, silky hair. I wanted a small dog because I have a bad back and wanted one that I could carry and bathe easily. Well this little guy is perfect for me. It is like lifting "nothing" when I pick him up. He's about 9 months old - I suspect he's pretty much through growing - but then, who knows! Carol Jean |
I have a smaller yorkie, though not tiny , he is definately not huge...but in my constant research of ancient yorkies and origins or yorkies..before the 7 pound breed standard there were the original yorkie dogs...and they were much larger than thier relatives today, one report I read from a yorkshire historical paper documents a yorkie ancestor that weighed 30 pounds ! Used in hunting and coal mining the dog had to be a hearty breed , and he was, and still is, though so much smaller today due to the smaller ones being popular.I wanted a medium to larger one myself as my other dogs are bigger and very boisterous, so I wanted my yorkie to be able to hold his own...though not a large dog Moe does tend to hold his own, in fact so much so that I have found myself having to protect the others from him! Anyways your 2 are beautiful, and have probably got a kick back to the long gone days when the yorkie dog was a medium sized dog! Here is a link to some other interresting reading. http://www.petpublishing.com/dogken/breeds/yorkie.shtml |
large yorkies rule 2 Attachment(s) I love your two "Teapots".I have 2 yorkie boys One is 13lbs and the Other is 13weeks at 7lbs. When I got Peanut the Breeder said he would only be about 6lbs as adult. But he grew and grew. Now he is 7months old and 13lbs. We love every pound of him.His brother Thumper is going to be maybe 14lbs to 16lbs as adult.Thumpers Mom is 16lbs and Dad is about 6lbs. So we know he would be large. I heard Hubby tell someone the other day that Dublin's bigger because he's from Ireland and they make them bigger over there. I think I'll start making up some good stories for when people ask...:p |
My groomer told me she thinks my 10lb Chachi is a silky. She compared him to Jewels who is 6 lbs and said he is so much bigger than her and has a longer nose. Chachi is definitely a yorkie. We got him and Jewels from the same breeder. I have always read posts where people speculating on whether someones big yorkie was actually a yorkie and now it happened to me. Oh well I love Chachi all the same. |
