I am so happy Mickey is home with his mommy and daddy.
Hope today is a better day for him and he eats some to gain his strength back. We're all praying for you Mickey to have a speedy
recovery. Debbi you are a wonderful mommy to give Mickey such
great care and love. I hope the surgery was a complete success
and the worst is behind both of you.
Get well Mickey.

Hugs to both of you,

Betty'sMom 05-11-2007 07:48 AM

I am SO glad he is doing a little better. It will take time, but as long as he keeps improving, that is great. If he starts messing with his stitches, you could always put a collar on him, but I know you don't want him to be any more uncomfortable than he is already. ((HUGS)) for Mickey!!!!!!!

Well Mickeys eating a little here and there, but it all comes back up, so does his meds. he cant seem to hold any thing down even the stomach meds for upset tummys. Hes on 6 different meds and its been a lot of work, and so hard to get them down him cause I cant put them in food he dont want the food. and once I get them down , he is off throwing them all up again.
We have tried feeding him his reg food, cheese, chicken, cereal, treats, . Scrambled eggs icecream, chicken, steak, hamburgar, Turkey breast, chicken breast lunch meat. Prescription a/d , Prescription S/D,. he did eat like 10 bites of the hamburgar and steak bites, but that came up, he did eat the turkey breast but that came up.
he ate a little cottage cheese, but that came up.
so today I start him on the c/d Prescription feed by syringe. But I dont know how thats going to stay down, if nothing else seems to be. hes still crying and straing to get just a few drops of pee out. and now his poo is like black tar. hes so skinny. Please keep praying for him. Thanks.

Metacam anti-inflammatory & Pain

Well when I got off here earlyer The vet called me back , I had left him a message about Mickeys poop looking like black tar. He said to bring him right in, Well He was leaving with in 30 minutes from the time we talked and there was no way we could make it there in time. So I called him back and said I would bring him in first thing in the morning and that way it would give me a chance to bring in a stool sample too.
well The good news is Mickeys kept down three large syringe full of the a/d prescription diet This is what I feed him in the syringe. and lots of water and pedylite, .
hes even went out 4 times today, but over did it and couldnt walk back in. He was so excited to see my kids here, They came for Mothers day and he was up and wagging his little stub .
The bad news is, Its time to give him his meds again and thats what I think is making him sick. so will talk to the vet in the morning when I take him in to see if any of the meds is whats causing him to be sick, becaus ewith out the meds he keeps the food down.
hes drinking his pedylite and keeps it down his water too, well until I give him those meds. heres a pic of the poor little guy resting.

I'm so glad he is home!!! Give him lots and lots of kisses from me, Teddy and London! :)

Basically this article says that if nausea, appetite loss, vomiting or diarrhea occur while on metacam, use should be discontinued because it could be affecting the liver and kidneys...
The most common side effects of meloxicam are nausea, appetite loss, vomiting or diarrhea. If any of the above are noted, meloxicam should be discontinued and the dog brought in for a liver enzyme and renal parameter blood test. In most cases, the reaction is minor and resolves with symptomatic relief, but it is important to rule out whether or not the patient has more than just a routine upset stomach.
If a patient has borderline kidney function, NSAIDs should not be used as they reduce blood flow through the kidneys. It is also important that NSAIDS not be given to dehydrated patients because of this potential side effect.
The Hepatopathy Side Effect (usually occurs within the first 3 weeks of use)
A carprofen reaction that has received special attention is hepatopathy, a type of liver disease. Symptoms include nausea, appetite loss, and/or diarrhea as well as marked elevations (3-4 times higher than the normal range) in liver enzymes measured in the blood. The question of whether other veterinary NSAIDs share this reaction has arisen. At this time, it is generally felt that the hepatopathy idiosyncratic reaction is not unique to carprofen and should be of concern with any veterinary NSAID.

Dogs with this syndrome show improvement with support 5 to 10 days after discontinuing medication. It is important that the NSAID be discontinued and the patient evaluated in the event of upset stomach signs in case of this syndrome. Even though this is a rare syndrome (one in 5000), it can become life-threatening if ignored. Appetite loss or other intestinal signs do not necessarily indicate a hepatopathy but since they might, it is important not to ignore these signs should they occur. There is no way to predict which dogs will experience this side effect.
The hepatopathy reaction usually occurs in the first 3 weeks after starting carprofen but could theoretically occur later.

All NSAIDs are removed from the body by the liver. If the patient’s liver is not working normally due to another disease or if the patient is taking other drugs that are also removed by the liver, it is possible to “over work” the liver and exacerbate pre-existing liver disease. If there is any question about a patient’s liver function, another class of pain reliever should be selected.

Thanks for looking up this information, Ill be sure to ask the ER Dr about it tomorrow. Im thinking about stooping most of the meds anyways all but the antibiotics. because once he throws up and gets them off his stomach, he seems so much better. he even seems to move around better.

YorkieShadow 05-13-2007 09:39 PM

when they did all his test i had them check his kidneys because of all the food recalls and me thinking that the dry food they was on had caused this, thats when they both become sick.
anyways his kidneys function was low, they told me it was prob because all that he had been through, so with them knowing that you would think that they would know better than to put him on that.
The food recall hotline gave me a # no to call and said if any of my dogs kidney funtion was low then it just might be from the foods, even though the food was not recalled as of yet. they said to get a paper from the vet stating their kidney function was low, when I asked for it the vet said No its not from the recall. its prob just from all hes been through. well how does he know and I feel that they was paid for that test and Im the one that asked for that test to be done that they have no right to refuse me a paper saying what they found. and im still going to tell them I want it.

OH MY GOSH
I just looked up his other meds Baytril the antibiotic an dits side effects can cause crystals in the urine, Thats what he just had the surgery for.
The use of enrofloxacin can produce crystals in urine. These crystals may show up on a laboratory test thus it is important to be aware of this side effect.

See retinal damage below regarding the recently described feline retinal problem associated with enrofloxacin at higher doses.

Oh my goodness. I think you need a new vet. Immediately. That poor baby! *cries*

Ozzie'sperson 05-14-2007 05:03 AM

Continuing to pray

Poor Mickey! I sure hope you get some good, solid answers today.
Sometimes the vets just ignore you, so make sure you are HEARD. Otherwise, I'd take the advice of some previous posters and get a new vet!

Good luck. Thoughts and prayers continue your way.
:)

Yes Yorkieshadow, I have no idea why vets prescribe the medicines that they do to some patients...I really do not understand. It's almost as if they don't even bother to look up who shouldn't get it. They just write a prescription because it helps most dogs...Same with the meds that they prescribed for Miko after his first surgery...He almost died because of the prescriptions he was given. I told the vet, and they said that's probably not what it was, but you know what??? I took him off all the pain meds and nausea meds, and guess what?? He got better!!
Mickey's probably nauseous because the meds are making him so sick and affecting his kidneys and liver and all...

YorkieShadow 05-14-2007 10:19 AM

He keeping most of his food down yesterday and today, he did get sick once today two piles. The good news is his insicion is looking good and healing great, No swelling no redness. the bruising is starting to fade out now. Hes drinking some on his own, but I still srynge pedlite down him after he takes his pills and other meds and inbetween the syringe feeding, his eyes look brighter today, but he lays most of the time. I dropped two of his meds, they seemed to make him worse and keeping him on the acid pills for his tummy and the antibiotics and the pain meds once a day instead of 3 x's aday. The bad news is he has lost a lot of weight going from 5 lb -3lbs
hes not eating at all on his own he did two days but after throwing it up each time its like he just quit eating. he still moans and crys when peeing and he only seems to get out a few srops each time. we was suppose to be at the vets this morning but I had to change it until later today. I have made a huge list on what to ask the vet, I dont want to forget any thing. Theres has been no more black stuff when he poos, but he hasent pooped today, Im waiting on that so I can take a sample in to the vet with us.

RMKC 05-14-2007 10:26 AM
