Little advice please... Okay well we got our sweet Lexi (still my avatar) about a month ago and sadly she died last week ...long story! She went back to the breeder so that she could help us nurse her back to health. She was doing great until one morning she found her dead. So of course Lexi was adorable! So cudly and sweet and tiny...just perfect! And now the breeder has offered to let us pick out another little girl from a 7 week old litter. I don't want to be picky but lexi was soooo cute. And the mom of this litter isn't very cute but the dad is cute and little. How do you tell what they will grow up to look like or how do you tell what their personality will be? I don't want to sound insensitive...I do really just want a healthy happy baby but I paid good money for Lexi and I'm really bummed she died. I hope she isn't planning on you taking a puppy now at 7 weeks. That is to young. So sorry to hear about Lexi, that's a tough choice picking up another so soon. Good luck on your pick. Size is no guarantee. I see you got Lexi at 9 weeks old. They should stay until 12 weeks with their mother. |
See if you could take some pictures of the puppies and then post them here on YT.. I think that would be the easiest way.. Sorry to hear about your other little one passing away :( |
If you're not happy with any of the puppies, then I wouldn't take one just to replace Lexi. Maybe you could look elsewhere or wait for another litter or something. That would give you some time after losing your baby. |

First and foremost I am terribly sorry for your loss, that is heartbreaking. Next, what health issues did Lexi have? Before you take another pup make sure it is healthy, as someone else said, don't take it under 12wks of age. Next, you know, you can get an idea of how a pup will look grown up but there are no guarantees, same with size. I would go with your heart and you will know. If none of them meet what you would like are you able to get a refund? Best wishes to you.. Kathy |
Personality depends on the owner, the temperament of the parents, and the dog itself! You can tell their personality when they're puppies, more or less. Is the puppy playful and fearless? Or is a little more shy and cautious? Unfortunately color is really hard to determine in the first few months. You have to look at the parents and the pedigree (if there is one), then you can get a general idea of what colors your pup is most likely to end up with. That's terrible about Lexi. :( Did the breeder say what she died from? (Hope that isn't an insensitive question! If it is, I'm really sorry.) |
Well, as someone else said, I hope she's not letting you take her at 7 weeks ;) which works out in your favor in more way than one! Why don't you ask her if you can wait a few weeks, and then decided? That way they can grow into their looks. If not, if her contract states "money back", get back your money and look for another breeder. If she won't give money back, choose a pup...you'll fall in love with her, I promise! They're easy to fall for! :D PS. I'm an idiot and forgot to say, SO sorry for your loss. :( |
Thanks guys. I suppose we could get the money back but this breeder has been breeding for a long time...she knows what she's doing and I would feel bad just yanking it out from under her when she's been so helpful. We're not sure why Lexi died she didn't show any obvious signs of death, she did have low blood sugar and wouldn't eat so that's why I took her back in the first place. Looking back I remember her having kind of a sad face all the time, but I've never had a Yorki. I picked out the littlest girl yesterday. She was the cutest with her big ol ears! She gave little kisses and was sweet when I held her...she did get kind of scared when I went to pick her up at first, but she's so tiny I would be too! I don't plan on getting her until next week, she'll be nine weeks then. Is this too soon? I'm just so scared to go through all of it again! I will try to take some pics and post them here so you all can tell me what you think. thank you for your kind words, Heather |

Everything I read before I got my baby girl said to wait at least until 10 weeks, and that 12 weeks was ideal. Is the Mom on-site with the puppies? If so, I'd make sure she stays there until she's 12 weeks, but if the mom isn't with the puppies anymore anyway, then I guess it won't make much difference if you bring her home earlier. Either way, good luck! I'm sorry to hear you lost Lexi. I can't imagine how heartbreaking that is for you! |

Hey Heather, so sorry about your baby! My grandbaby was so little and sick when my daughter got her and she was hypoglocemic (sp) and had siezures. It was sooo scary poor baby! But as soon as we knew what was wrong with her we were able to get her back to health. Thank goodness. These babies can be soo small and I really believe that it is best to stay with their fur mommies until atleast 10 weeks, but like others have said... 12 is optimal. Good luck girl! |
I'm so sorry about Lexi. We went through a similar experience. Our first yorkie, Bandit, died a month after we got him. When we got Tucker, we went to a different place. (we didn't know about puppy mills at the time and the Bandit came from a pet store) When we got Tucker, he was totally different from Bandit. We brought him home weighing more than Bandit did when he died! When we went to the breeder we just sat down on the floor with all of the puppies and picked the one who seemed the happiest! Size is impossible to tell though. Tucker was the smallest of the litter. We've since learned that his litter is from 4 lbs to 14 lbs! (Tucker would be the 14 pounder) Good luck to you!!! |
More questions Wow I had no idea they could get to 14 lbs!!! Of course I would love a little one but I'm more concerned with her health. Stressful this stuff is...we were supposed to be running in green grass and playing with toys then BAM:eek: !! Not so perfect sometimes is it?! That leads me to ask if you all think there is any risk to getting the runt of the litter. Can you all share with me how much yours weighed when you brought it home and how much it weighs now? thank you for all of your encouraging words, Heather |
First, let me say that I am so sorry for your loss. At a young age, they are so vulnerable and can go down very quickly. I think the goal is to find a reputable breeder that does all the proper testing on these little ones and their parents...Bile acid tests are so important and not all breeders do them. Also, make sure you get at least a 1yr health guarantee against all genetic diseases/defects. Make sure your new pup will have access to food and water at all times and that he/she gets several small meals per day to avoid those hypoglycemic attacks. My yorkie was 1lb 2 oz at 12 weeks, but our yorkie was very sick when we got him. He had coccidia, hypoglycemia, upper respiratory infection, etc. He almost died, but thank goodness we were able to nurse him back to health. He is now 11lbs and not an ounce overweight. He's just slightly longer and taller :) |
I am so very sorry about the tragic loss of Lexi. I belive that when you see your baby you will know they are meant to be yours. Once you fall in love, nothing else matters because in your eyes they will always be beautiful. Good luck with whatever you decide. |
I would definately wait longer for picking up the runt of the litter. Especially if the first one didnt go so well. was lexi the runt too? if you took her home to early that could be why. I took the runt of the litter from my breeder as well she is still tiny she was 14 weeks when i took her home and weighed a little under 1.8 lbs. she is 5 months old now. The breeder that i got anna from wouldnt even let her out of her home until she was that age. since she was so tiny. |

My Rowdy - the one in the avatar with the red sweater - weighed 1 lb 12 oz when we brought him home and now he weighs 5 lbs (2 years old). He doesn't look (to me) like he weighs 5 lbs. He was the runt of the litter, but has had absolutely no health problems at all. Rexy weighed 2 lb 6 oz when we brought him home and now he weighs 6.5 lbs (17 months old). |
