NEED HELP! Hobbs is SICK!!!!!! When I came home for lunch today at 11:30, Hobbs was shaking and his tummy was really firm. He had not taken a poop all day so I thought he might be constipated. I figured I would see how he was doing when I came home at 5 and then decide whether to take him to the vet or not. Well, when I got home at 5, he was the same.....shaking and tummy was firm but at this time whenever I picked him up, he would wimper a little very faintly in my ear. He still hadn't taken a poop and he usually poops first thing in the morning and again when I get home from work. I decided to take him to the vet. I told her he hadn't pooped all day, she checked his temp which was normal, she stuck her finger up there and said his stool was definately firm. Like me, she figured he was probably constipated. He pooped at the vet's office, but just a tiny bit. His tummy was a little less firm after he pooped a little, but not much. The vet gave him a shot of stool softener and an asprin and told me to call her in the morning and let her know how he was doing. When I brought Hobbs home, he ate and drank water and peed. It's been 2.5 hours since the vet visit and he still hasn't pooped again. He's being lethargic, when I pick him up he shakes and whines a little like it hurts, and his tummy is still firm. What in the world could be wrong with him?! Could he still be constipated?? I am SOOOOOOOOO worried about him!!!!!!!!! I would be absolutely DEVASTATED if something happened to my boy. We spilled a few tiny pieces of onion on the floor last night when we were cooking dinner and thought he didn't get any, but what if he did?! If he did, it was only a tiny piece or two, but what do onions do to dogs? What could be wrong with him? I'm so worried and upset. :( :( :( PLEASE HELP!!!!!!! |
Oh now i am so sorry!!! I hope he starts feeling better soon. I would call the vet again just to see if he needs to be brought back in:( |
Thanks so much for replying, Amber. You are always so thoughtful. My vet closes at 6. I wanted to try to see if anyone had any ideas at all what could be wrong wtih him before I forked out hundreds of dollars at the emergency vet. If it comes down to it, though, I'll take him there for sure! I'll keep you updated. |
he probably is still constipated since he hasnt' really gone potty. try feeding him canned pumpkin with his food or some metamucil. half a teaspoon should do it. that will get things flowing. hope he feels better soon |

Aww, I know the feeling of worrying when it comes to our lil ones.... I will be praying for him....hopefully the onion just gave him an upset stomach and he will be ok ...pooping fine and all... |

Poor baby. I don't think a little onion would hurt him, but it may have given him a little tummy ache. Did the vet say anything about giving him a little pepto bismol to soothe his tummy. My dogs have had a lot of tummy issues and seems like I run them in for expensive testing and it's nothing that a day or so wouldn't have cured. I would just watch him and if he gets worse call the ER vet. I will pray he feels better soon. Keep us posted. |
i agree with just getting some canned pumpkin and a thremometer. if that doesnt work after 2 hours, theni would consider going to the emergency vet. i will be oraying for your baby, keep us posted !!!! |
awwwwwwww poor Hobbs. I agree, I'd try the canned pumpkin and the thermometer and watch him for a couple hours. I would think the stool softener would be kicking in soon. Sometimes those cause alot of discomfort. I hope he feels better soon!!! |
Thanks, everyone. I feel so badly for him. He seems like he's in pain. Poor baby. |
Question: how long would it take the canned pumpkin to work? I mean, he's already gotten a stool softener...wouldn't the pumpkin serve the same purpose?? |
my first thought is maybe trying to take him for a walk...maybe get things moving so to say! Feel better sweetie! |

I am so very sorry that Hobbs' is feeling poorly. Try a nice warm compress and a tummy rub. Since you don't have a thermometer you might try taking a q-tip wet it with warm water and then coat it with vasciline..... and then carefully insert about 1/2"...... |
If nothing else the walk will get the "gas" out.....I'd think it'll feel better. Poor fella.... |
OH NO Rebecca I am so sorry and poor baby boy Hobbs. I hate to hear he is sick. I know how you feel - I really do. Murphy had a little bug or somethng yesterday too and threw up 3 times - it scared the crap out of me. They are just so small and fragile to take any chances so I know why you are scared. Just give him tons of love tonight and try to let the stool softner work its magic if he is not better in the AM go back to the Vet for sure. I always keep a bottle of medicine for diarrhea and vomiting near by to give mine if they have an upset tummy. Maybe you can ask the vet if you should carry something like that as well for the future. Please give him some extra kisses and hugs from his good old aunt Caren!! I love you baby boy Hobbs - hang in there buddy!! :( :( :( |
K. THANKS! So, should I do the Q-tip/thermometer thing and THEN take him on a walk?? My hubby keeps telling me not to stick anything up his hiney bc he doesn't want me to "torture" him. Should I ignore him and do it anyway? |
I would take a little walk first and then "lube"....come to think of it...maybe "lube" first and then walk? |

this may sound weird to you but if you take a match from a match book, wet it, and stick it in his little booty (leave the end sticking out) this will cause him to poop. One of hte vets i used to work said the used to do this all the time to get dogs to poop before surgery so the didn't do it during surgery. i know its different but i promise it won't hurt your dog at all. |
You know how we humans are when we get sick - just need to rest and be still. I know when my tummy hurts I want NO ONE touching me. IS he just resting now or is he whining while he is lying there? Thats is why Murphy threw up on Chris last night - Chris just HAD to pick him up when I said leave him be and Murphy threw up all over him - ha, ha!! :p :D |

Poor Hobbs.....he has NO IDEA we are all sitting here talking about shoving things in his little hiney!! :( |
Hobbs does not whine when he is sitting on the floor by himself, which he is doing right now. He whines when I pick him up. I, too, have heard about the match thing. Something about the sulfur makes them poop. I don\'t even think we HAVE a match book here. *sigh* |
oh good, you guys have heard about it too. i thought i was gonna get yelled at for telling you to stick a match up his bum. LOL poor hobbs and his little booty |
