Congrats on your yorkie! When we got Luna the breeder gave her, her first bath the night before we took her home with us. I believe she was around 9 weeks old... Luna was fine and smelled great! I'm not sure if 7 1/2 weeks is too young though, but just letting you know when our yorkie had her first bath so you can compare... btw she is now 12 weeks old. :p Also, if you just got him I would wait till at least a day or two so he can first get use to your family. But that's just me. We didn't give Luna a bath till a week and a 1/2 later... and the vet says we should only bathe her once a month unless she gets really really dirty. |
Its ok to give the first bath now. Just remember to buy a shampoo that is tearless and for puppies. When you bathe him put cotton balls in his ear so that water doesnt get in. Dont wet his face with water, rather wipe it down with a wet towel (with no soap). |
If you use the blow dryer keep it on low so not to get to hot. and don't let him get in a draft. |
And don't let water get up his nose! If something really terrifying happens when they are a baby, they'll hate baths forever! :( |
Welcome to YorkieTalk and Congratulations on your new baby!! Good luck with the first bath ... you will get some really good advice here!! :) |
I gave Snoodles a bath the day after she came home. She waas very happy, as she smelled to high heaven! I couldn't stand to even hold her. Place the hair dryer in a coffee can, that way, your hands are free to hold him and brush him. I do this all the time. Pat |
We have bathed Toto as often as we want from day one! Our breeder had just bathed her when we brought her home and she was just so sweet and smelled so good, it really spoiled us and we can't bear for her to smell like a "dog"! :) When we realized that we wanted to bathe her more often than all the books suggested, we discussed it with our vet ... Dr. Lucy said we could bathe her as much as we wanted as long as we don't see any problems with her skin or coat! So ... if it's once a week ... every other day ... we do it as often as she needs it! So far, so good ... no problems! I always make sure that I rinse her for a long time using a good sprayer. I take all her "equipment" along when we are travelling ... if a hotel doesn't have proper bath equipment ... Patrick does!! ;) I think for the most part, it's whatever works for you and how much time and energy you want to dedicate to your baby!! ;) |
Bettyanne-I am so glad to hear that u bathe Toto as often as u like. I heard somewhere that you can only bathe them once a week if that. But wow, does Dolce smell after like 3 days!! I wanna bathe her right then and there but i was afraid that if I did, I would ruin her coat. Now after reading what you wrote, I cannot wait to go home and give her a good washing!! :D NOw Bettyanne, if u could just tell me the trick for keeping those little buggers still when I dry her it would be VERY helpful!! I wind up getting saturated by the time I am done washing her because she squirms all over the place. Also should I not use the shampoo to wash her face or top of her head??? I AM SO NERVOUS ABOUT THIS!! Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks you guys!! |
Hi there, I think there will be no big problems in giving your yorkie a bath. The only thing is, make sure it is not too cold or too long. Since it's a young puppy the skin is very sensitive, so make sure the water and blow dryer are not too hot. As per the frequency os baths, it is recommended that we do not bathe our yorkies more than once a week, because the natural oils produced by the animal protect the skin and coat agains fungus, infections, irritation and keep the coat healthy. But of course, that is not a rule, if you feel there is a week that your yorkie needs 2 baths, i don;t think that will create any problems...moderation is the key word. Also, you may want to put a cotton ball on the ears to make sure water doesn't get in (you can even use a little bit of natural oil so the cotton wont absorb water) And make sure it is a tearless puppy shampoo... Good luck... |
How do you keep the cotton balls in? Snoodles gets them out before I can put them in the other ear! |
I gave my charlie his first bath when he was young it was not the first night he got to my house. I put him in the sink and use dog shampoo that I got from the vet office. I take him upstairs when I am done and blow dry him. I get on the floor and blow dry him. I also give him a treat after bathing him. |

Thanks! Just sounds like one just keeps tdrying and eventually they get use to it. What is ottite? I'm assuming it is an ear infection! Ye Gads! I hope she doesn't get that! Mine has terrible seperation anxiety. I left today, and my hubby said she ran to back door, then front door etc. etc. then up on the couch looking out the window. First she was screeching then he said it was wimpering. Nice to be loved so much, but I feel sorry for her, as I can't take her everywhere with me. When we go to dinner, I put her in her carrier. I believe she sleeps until we get home. I HOPE! Pat |
Pat, I use Coat Handlers Shampoo and Coat Handlers Conditioner. The shampoo won't burn their little eyes. I shampoo her head, being careful not to get it in her eyes ... I have gotten it in her eyes before but she doesn't react any worse than if it is just clear water. Toto doesn't like water in their eyes!! I keep a close check on her hair and skin [the vet sees her almost every month] to make sure it stays healthy. I never use a dryer on her ... I make her bath time when I know I will have plenty of time to just wrap her in a big warm towel and sit and hold her until she is just damp dry [sometimes we snuggle up and nap]! When she is almost dry, I brush her really good and she loves it and so do I! It gives us time for just us!! ;) |
