A Question About Yorkie Size... I am getting a yorkie puppy in 2 1/2 weeks. I am more than excited, there are no words to express the mix of love, fear, and anticipation I am feeling. I have seriously wanted a yorkie since I was 11 years old, and I'm finally bringing him home. When I set out on my quest to finally get a yorkie baby, I wanted one on the smaller side, probably 3-4 lbs., simply because I plan to bring him everywhere with me (school, work, shopping, etc.) and I thought it would be easier if he was smaller. However, fell in love with my baby. My little boy's mom is 7 lbs and his dad is 4 lbs. The breeder expects the puppies to weigh about 5-6 lbs as adults. As a disclaimer: I don't care if he grows up to be 100 lbs, I would love him just the same (can you tell I'm lovestruck?). I don't think there is anything wrong with standard sized yorkies or teapot yorkies, I love them just the same. I was seeking a small one because I thought it would suit my lifestyle better. My question is, are the 5-6 pound babies as "portable" (I use this term loosely) as the smaller ones? Is there anyone that takes their standard sized yorkie with them everywhere? |

I think they CAN be just as portable, and even sturdier than the tiny ones, maybe not quite so fragile... |
5lbs = 5 boxes of butter...pick 'em up and see. It's lighter than you'd think. :) Chloe's the runt of the litter and is barely over 2lbs at almost 6 months so she's super portable :p :rolleyes: |
Thanks for the reply, Patti. All of three of your babies are gorgeous! I've seen pictures of your two yorkies, and I can barely tell the difference in size, from pictures at least, and I think I remember reading that your other one is 3lbs...maybe I should just hope for my baby to have a small, compact body like his daddy. That would help with portability, I assume. :rolleyes: |

I have a 9 pounder (which I LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!) and we take him all over the place. We have a really cute larger bag that he fits in with room to spare... I think if he was smaller it would be easier, but I still love taking him with me! |
Miko is about 11lbs now I think and we take him places all the time, in his stroller :) We also have a 10month old maltese that's 3.5 lbs and we take her everywhere to in the stroller so Miko doesn't get lonely in there by himself :) Can't take one and not the other! |

It all depends on the body type (as much as weight)....my little boy Sammie is almost 3 pounds but he's really sturdy (has short legs, short body length)...he's like a bowling ball ....but if he's in my arms for a while, I have to switch arms or make sure he's in his carrying bag. My little girl Rio is only 1 pound 9 ounces but her body is more fragile (like a slinky) so even though she's lighter in weight...it's kind of hard to carry her because she doesn't really hug onto your hand, she dangles... Does this make sense? |

it makes perfect sense to me!! that is how i would describe romeo. i like the "feel" of his little round body and at 2.65 pounds he is like a little fur ball! and just like you said if i hold him for a while i will have to switch hands or hand him off to someone else! that doesn't happen too much because he is such a little man! he doesn't want to be smothered too long and too much!:rolleyes: |
Yes, 5-6 pound yorkies are just as transportable.....otherwise I couldn't carry 2 to ringside.....they travel very well, everywhere with me.....I find them easier to hold, as they is more of them to hold....smaller ones I have difficulty with, even in grooming, I'm always afraid to hurt them. |
