Too skinny.. Hey all, any advice in helping my yorkie gain weight? he is 3.4 pounds at 5 months but seems like he should weight more because his legs and body look so skinny. He seems to eat fine, and the vet says his weight is normal, so maybe I should worry about how thin he looks. I just see other yorkies on here with such cute little legs, and Tobey's are skinny, maybe he needs thicker hair. I feed him eukanuba so I think he is getting the right nutrition. |
I have to be honest with you, Eukanuba is really not a very good quality dog food and he probably is not getting enough nutrition. Please check out this site: www.dogfoodanalysis.com Try to find a food that is a 5 or 4 star rating. The 6 star foods are way to high in protein for our little ones. I am feeding Canidae Dry Food. Wasn't Eukanuba on one of the recalls? I'd stick with a company that didn't make the recall list. |
If he seems healthy could it be the parents are small framed & he takes after them???....I've seen some yorkies that are heavy framed & built like a brick & I've seen some that are tiny framed & when you pick them up there very light....just asking :) |
what to feed and where to buy it? If Eukanuba isn't a good food, what should I try? I looked on the dog food review site and I don't recognize a lot of the good name brands. Out of what Petsmart sells, which is the best? |
Eukanuba dry food wasn't on the recall list, just the wet food which we never fed him.. |

I think there is a build just like Casper, which I was told shows better in the ring, due to the long legs showing off the long coat better(Ozmillion type - he is from Ozmillion so that would make sense) .....and he is perfectly healthy and is 4 and a half years old now. pic1. I think my girl is skinny as well. She is almost 8 month old and 2.3 lb. She is pretty picky eater but she isn't having any health problem so I am not too concern. I try to feed her as much and I free feed her as well. (Originally she was on schedule but I gave up since she just won't eat!!) I give her treats every time she does her job right!! But I do try to feed her a quality food. Unfortunately she doesn't like most of healthy, good quality food but I try!!! I give her chicken and rice sometime as well. |
Bird Legs I have three Yorkies. My youngest is Katie. She is 5 months old and weighs 2.6lbs. I feel bad for her because she has this fluffy coat and little toothpick legs. I had her at the vet today and asked the vet about it. The vet told me she looked that way because the hair on the rest of her body is so fluffy. When I give her a bath, she is more proportionate. The vet said to give her time and her legs would get more hair. It just looks funny because it looks like she is walking around on toothpicks! |

If you ask what the best food for your yorkie ,you will get at least 10 different brands and those pet owners will assure you that this one or that one is the very best. I know there are plenty of dogfoods that you can read the label and it's all awful just awful ingredients.It could deffinately be that he has thin hair and you see his legs with little hair. I had a female yorkie who had little hair and her legs looked like two pencils :) The vet said she was at a normal weight for her age and size... Genie,Cookie,Lola & Angel |
Maybe your puppy just had parents that were her body type, and she inherited it. If your vet is experienced with small dogs and yorkies, and he isn't concerned, I wouldn't be too concerned either. It could also be that hair hasn't grown in on his legs yet. maybe you could post a picture to show us what you're talking about? ;) |
Chloe's also REALLY skinny...not sickly skinny...but very skinny. She's good & healthy, though, according to the vet. She's barely over 2lbs and she'll be 6 months old on May 7. I mix Royal Canin for puppies w/ Euakanuba for puppies (she was fed Eukanuba at the breeders and I don't want to switch her too quickly) both dry foods. Her dry food is available at all times, but she hardly eats any... I'm also feeding her Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul wet food...I am able to get about 2Tbsp into her per day (1 T in the morning and 1 T at supper time). That's if I'm lucky, though...most of the time she won't eat in the morning. |

Maybe I will try getting a really good puppy food and mixing it like you do because I just bought a new bag of eukanuba and would hate to waste it. I talked to my husband about it last night and his opinion is that the little pet stores with the premium food are for snooty people and just some scam to get people to spend more money when it won't make a difference. I DO NOT agree cuz my little man's health is worth any amount of money. When you feed people food like chicken and rice, do you run the risk of them getting sick at all from their diet being switched up?? |
