Does your yorkie bark at other people? Bengi is such a sweet boy; so lovable when it comes to friends and family... but when we go out for a walk or to some place, or when he looks out the window he barks at people. Yesterday, we went to Petco, and he barked at everybody that would come close to him. I'm pretty sure he wouldn't not bite, unless somebody would do something bad to him... but I don't like when people look at him saying "what a cute puppy!" and then he goes "woof, woof, woof, woof" and they turn around and leave like my baby is a bad dog :( Does yorkie do this? Is there anything I can do to diminish this behavior??? |
Do you interact with the people looking at him? If I start talking to whomever is looking at them my two will look up at me and then wiggle around letting them know they'd like to be petted:) He may just be barking to 'protect' you and if he knows the people are okay he will probably settle down. Works for me. |
Mine only do it when they are behind the fence. I can take them places and they dont bark. |
My two boys bark at everyone and everything until they get up close--not sure Yorkies have great distance vision. A "For Sale" sign went in our neighbor's yard four days ago and they bark at it everytime they go out. |

He just started getting really vocal when he is inside and he sees people outside or someone knocks on the door. I don't mind...I feel it's his watchdog mode. When we are out walking it depends...sometimes he will bark and other times he won't. He is very shy though. He will bark and then run behind me to hide if the person tries to talk to him. I think it's too cute and funny. |
Mine bark at the dogs next door through the fence. When they are in the houe they bark at everyone they see and if a cat or dog are out there it drives them crazy. When we go for walks they sometimes bark at people but not usually. Maybe they are just protecting the house and that is why they bark. My step son has been staying with us for 3 months now and they still bark every time he comes down stairs or to the door. They act like they have never seen him before and he is some stranger invading their space. |
Mine love people a little too much, omnly Piper barks at other dogs when they come to close to mommy. |
Dior barks constantly until they come close n pet her she will clam down. I had to purchase a muzzle because when i take her out 5 am before i go to work she bark non stop. She wakes up the community. And with the muzzle she still continues to puff under her breath.:animal36 |
Just the mailman and paperboy. |
Ralfie really doesn't bark at all. He has a few times when someone came to the door, and I scolded him (because I live in an apt and did not want a dog that barks) and he got the hint right away. He hasn't since. Now, I know he's pretty rare and that most dogs bark occasionally, but it should only be when they are playing or "defending." Your dog barking at people like that in public is a behavior problem that needs to be corrected. How, I'm not exactly sure :D What I would do is try saying "NO" firmly, maybe using a spray bottle if needed, or however you discipline when he does other bad things. You could consult a trainer or try obedience class. It also sounds like maybe he needs to be socialized more, so that he becomes used to people approaching him. Good luck, I'll be interested to see what other people offer as well. :) |
This isn't just a Yorkie trait, many small (and some large) dogs do this and your right, it is embarassing. Mine does this as well, and even being a trainer I have a hard time curtailing this habit. I make it a point to get out more and more around people. Anytime we are walking and someone says something to me then my 2yr old Yorkie goes off barking and sometimes growling, and now my 5mo old biewer is starting to do the same so I am getting it under control. Mind you I walk three dogs..the Yorkie Teapot, the Biewer and my 11yr old Golden (who can be just as vocal). Its gotten better again since the weather is nice and we are walking more, but it is definitely something I do not like nor am I going to tolerate it. When I'm out I want well behaved dogs. I'd prefer that when i stop they sit and they are very close to always doing that but its take awhile and sometimes the "forget". Keep working on it, you can get it under control with practice and patience. Kathy |
Prior to getting my yorkie Cozy, Lucky my golden never barked on a walk. Now she get barks and he barks. Lucky will be quiet but she will continue barking until she can't see the people any more. Cozy honestly believes she is the protector. In her mind she is a 150 pound Rottie not a 10 pound yorkie. Lucky on the other hand barks because he thinks he should since she is barking. He gives in to peer pressure. |
my kirby is aweful at barking at people from inside the house. if he is outside he doesn't bark at them. drives me crazy |
Reece is the exact same way when I take him out...you would think he would be more socialized by now as I take him EVERYWHERE with me?? People say the same thing awwww how cute...then come up to him and he acts like a KILLER dog!! I am sure people are saying...what a little yapper...he cant even enjoy the dog park anymore...I dont know if its a male thing or what as my girls never act like him...so I feel your pain girl lol...
