Welcome to Yorkie Talk!!! What a cutie you have! Yorkies looks so cute and fluffy and sweet but they think they are as big as an Akita and definitely stubborn - After all they are Terriers or shall we say Terrors! Just like the other posts, yes they need to be deciplined and definitely can benifit greatly from basic training. They are smart so they will try to trick you too! Welcome to our world of Yorkie love! Once they wrap their little paws around your heart, you'll be hooked for life! |
My chester boy is 8.5 lbs and hs is very healthy and he is not fat, and he only weighed around 5 lbs at one year old, and yes chester is very stubborn and very smart, it is hard to scold a cute face. enjoy they are worth every minute of it.... |
Welcome to YT you are gonna love it here! My Lullabelle Is so stubborn. Just like her mommy! Yorkies tend to take on the personalities of their owners. As for his weight my mother in laws Yorkie is 13lbs:aimeeyork . He is still the cutest baby boy. And no he isn't a Westie.( I don't think I spelled that right?) Anyways LullaBelle is from NY and let me tell you you can take the dog out of NY, but you can't take the NY out of the dog! She thinks she is just as big and bad as a Rottie!:D |
2 Attachment(s) .....hi ....and welcome !:) ....yorkies know fine what they want and know just how to get it, believe me ! They are so cute, that you don't want to scold them, but you can as I do, use your voice when you are not happy......I go te te teh ! and they know fine they are being naughty, and give you that look, "who, me ?" Use the tones in your voice - high pitch scares them, but low pitch and slow, makes them stop and look at you:D .....good luck ! ;) :animal-pa Debra x x x x |
I am in a similar situation to you. I took Mickey home 4 weeks ago. He is now 13 weeks old. I also am used to big dogs. I had an Akita, and Huskies my whole life. Let me tell you, this puppy thing isnt easy, and yorkies are smart! They are CUTE and they know it. Don't worry though... Baxter will learn! Mickey has come such a long way in the past 4 weeks (ESPECIALLY in the past two weeks!)... it has really been a learning experience for both of us. The first few weeks you and your puppy are just getting to know each other. Mickey now has his good days, and his bad days... but his good days are really starting to out-number the bad days. Don't give up! Just keep telling yourself he is a puppy, try not to get fustrated, and just be consistent! As far as the weight goes... Mickeys last vet visit was one week ago- he was 12 weeks and weighed in at 4.9 lbs.... He is on the big size. He is continuing to grow, and if I had to guess he is def over 5 lbs now! I see you are from NY. I am also. Ya know... Baxter looks exactly like one of Mickeys brothers! Hmmm.... out of curiosity, where did you get him? He is soooooo adorable! Remember to have fun!!! |
Use a spray bottle filled with water they will learn very fast! |

Yessssss!! I agree!! I tried that for his barking.... Let me tell you, I had the spray bottle out for not even 2 days... He hasnt barked in like 2 weeks, and I havent had to touch the spray bottle! Best advice ever! |
Welcome to YT and yorkie "parenting" =) It seems pretty normal for his puppy stage with the exception of the stubborness and BIG attitude. He will never outgrow that, so get used to it! Showing him that you are the leader of the pack will keep it under control though. It's also a great thing because it's what contributes to yorkies great personality and expressions. Don't be afraid to discipline him because of his size, that shouldn't have anything to do with it because making a sharp noise, using a serious tone, or water spray bottle should do the trick. Physical abuse, aka spankings, are so outdated. Positive reinforcement is what it's all about these days! You could also try an "alpha roll" were you grab him by the shoulder blades and roll him onto his back, belly up. It's the doggie way of saying "i'm the boss." |
