I though everyone would say something when we got Max. I did get 1 comment, that it must cost alot having 3. I told them, Hell yes, why do you think I went back to my natural color. Their groomer was killing me. LOL

When I got my last pup (last month) I didn't even bother telling my family. My mother understands as she is exactly like me. My brother and sister would just think, why ANOTHER dog. Sometimes even my DH does not understand, but thats ok. Like I tell him, you don't have to understand, I don't understand everything you do/like, but I still love you for you. My dogs are my saving grace in this world. I would usually rather be with them then most people I know. They are true, accepting, non-judgemental, cheap entertainment and they ask nothing in return except food and love. I just figure as long as I am taking care of them, providing for them, can afford good healthcare for them...then it is NO BODYs business and I have to answer to noone...

Kathy

(PS. I have a 11yr old golden, 2yr old Yorkie, and now 5mo biewer), a Bronze wing pionus parrot, and two turtles (ok turtles are my college daughters).

I hear you! My parents are on my case about how many animals I have. I still haven't told them about my new baby because I know they'll moan and groan about it. The key is to surprise them with her, then they won't be able to resist her! Working at an animal shelter changes your perspective on things though. I have 2 'normal' cats, 2 handicapped cats and 2 dogs - one big and one little. I've opened my home to animals that no one else wanted or could care for, and I am so thankful to be able to do that. I spend a lot of money on food, but I do get vet care at no cost for all my babies.

People like us, animal people, will never understand non-animal people. I've come to accept that and don't care what other's say about the number of animals I have.

This is a good post and something I can relate to. First, I have been an animal lover since I was little (I'm 20 years old now and a junior in college). My mom always nurtured my animal infatuation, my dad encouraged it, but my dad was always the "good" guy saying I could have more animals and my mom would come out the "meanie". My dad died when I was 13, and by that time we already had two dogs. I didn't get any more pets after that, except for goldfish lol! Now I'm an animal sciences major, so I'm putting my love for animals first. My whole family can see that now, and they know it's not just some 'stupid' infatuation. I knew I wanted to raise a service dog, and I did the applications myself and I got my puppy to raise last May. I decided I wanted another dog as a pet, and I chose the breed and breeder myself, and I told my mom who is surprisingly very supportive. She knows how responsible I am (I'm not a party-goer college kid) and that I understand the responsibilities of owning a dog and training it, etc. My extended family (my grandmother especially) is just starting to accept this as who I am, and that animals are my life. I plan on getting the yorkie next Spring when my puppy has matured and is gentle enough to have a new baby, and I hope that my family can understand that as well. As much as I don't believe in family approval (I'll do what I want, when I want, etc.), my mom's opinion matters greatly to me, and I'm very thankful that she understands what animals mean to me and my life. It's hard when someone criticizes for having more than one dog. It doesn't mean you're dirty or you don't take care of them at all! IMO, these people need some manners to keep their mouths shut!

I got together with family yesterday and my great aunt said " I heard you got a mutt" So you know I was pissed right? I told her "I do not have a MUTT I have a dog. A mutt is a mixed breed, my dog is a full breed" She said "well he's a mutt to me." Whatever lady...is what I was thinking.I had to respect her because she is older.
You don't have to 'RESPECT' her...just don't say anythinh ugly out loud!

I had one yorkie who was 'allowed' everywhere I went... everyone let me bring him to their house, they would ASK me to! Now I have 2 and my BOYS are not invited at all to anyone's house. There are 2 of them now and its too much stimulation for some people... BAH!! I love having 2!

Sometimes I get a raised eyebrow or two. Right now, we have two cats, one dog, a bird, and a fish. Sounds like a lot, buy it isn't. In all honesty, I would like another cat or dog, I just don't know if my oldest cat will adjust well to it, he is barely tolerating Percy.

The odd thing is this. We used to have 3 cats and a dog. (Both the cat and my Rottie had to go to the Rainbow Bridge in their old age). The thing that got the most looks were the 3 cats! It was like we were crazy cat people with a smelly house. As long as you clean the litter everyday and vacuum almost daily, really, my house is clean.

All my babies are well taken care of. Always go to the vet, plenty of food and treats, almost as many toys as the skin-kids. And TONS of love. Honestly, I think that not only are we lucky to have them, they are lucky to have us. Sometimes, I wish I had their lives.

I can't remember a time in my life I never had an animal be it rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, dwarf hamsters, fishes, cats, dogs, birds. My parents were supportive of us having pets and it really helped me become a responsible, loving person I am today. After getting married and coming to Canada, I now have a Yorkie and a budgie. If given me the chance of a bigger house and an income, I would have another dog or maybe two for sure! Being that my husband never had a pet before, it is considered a huge step on his part and he learned to love our puppy and budgie. My in-laws family is different though. They think dogs are dirty and are supposed to be kept outside/garage and not indoor which I feel is unacceptable..can you imagine keeping a dog outside during winter in Canada or in a garage full of dangerous parts? Although my MIL is okay and has somewhat accepted my furbaby, he is cute not many people can resist him . My FIL is out of the question. Don't think he loves anything much at all especially when it comes to animals although I do hope he slowly will. I respect them for what they are but I still feel people who never received an opportunity to love or be loved by an animal misses out a lot in their lives.

My mother in law is not a dog fan - she rarely comes to my house (not that I care) but she is always asking my husband why do you have dogs in the house?

I came from a large farming family, my fathers side trained horses for cart racing. In addition to horses we had dogs, cats and various other crittiers. When I met my husband he had never owned a pet in his life. Of course I had 2 Yorkies, 2 cats and a Mastiff in my house. When we got married he bought me a Rottie. His mother went nuts! She wanted all the animals outside. We only lived 4 miles from them at the time. After 2 years of constant complaining my husband and I moved out of state. We've been married 15 years now and that woman still refuses to come to our home. My husband has learned that animals do enrich our lives and I make my living as a groomer so not having animals isn't even a consideration.

AND I keep a VERY tidy house.
