What is the average amount of time they are left at the groomers? Silly question. This is our third trip to our third groomer (who did a great job and there will be pics later!) The only thing I wasn't happy about, was the amount of time I had to leave him, 4 hours. The first one we went to told me to leave him all day, the second one was about 3-4 hours as well. Is this normal? It just seems like an awful long time for a bath/cut/nail clip. I always make an appointment, so I always figure he will be seen when we get there, but he is always put in a run, then I am told to come back hours later. How does this normally work? I don't like him sitting in a run with no food or water for hours. (Although, I bring treats for them to give him after) Just wondering how this all works, and if this practice isn't normal, should I find someone different? |
2 hours with my groomer. If it takes longer, they are overbooked. |
Im takin Gizmo in for a puppy package tomorrow...bath, nail clippings, cut around paws and eyes to familiarize him with the whole ordeal. They told me 2-3 hours because he will probably get stresed out and this allows for breaks so he can remain calm. I dont know personally since this will be a first, but thats what i was told as well. Seems like a long time. And i have to pay an additional 14$ if i want to stay....isnt that rediculous |
My groomer takes 3 hours, but she does both girls. |

yeah they said its because it delays them because they cant do their jobs correctly, like they have someone watching over them, so it takes longer, thats why they want the additional charge. I understand, but still think its weird...i probably will take him elsewhere |
Grooming I have taken both of my yorkies to the same groomer...so every 2 weeks for 15 years. She "LETS" me drop him off before work, and pick him up at noon. So that would be 3 1/2 hours. But I think that's about normal where I live. He's always ready to go when I get there,I have never had to wait. I have alot of faith in her, she's been really good with both of them. As a matter of fact she was with one vet clinic then moved to another and I just changed right along with her. :aimeeyork |
Cali takes 1 1/2 hours normally. |
I'd think it takes 3-4 hours for a place that gets busy. It is kind of weird though as if you make an appointment they should take care of your dog right away then... Idon't have good experience with the time, the shortest Pepper was at the groomers was around 4 hours, maybe a little more. Once, I made an appointment a week earlier or so, dropped Pepper by 10 and he wasn't ready till 5!!! I got really upset and that was it for me leaving him at the groomers. I'll go again as he's starting to grow hairs in the weirdest places  but I'll make sure I can hang out around there and just wait. He really just needs ears and nails - and maybe face a little |
It takes 2 to 3 hours usually. My groomer has everyone drop off between 7 and 8:30 am then it is pretty much first come, first serve. Gracie is usually ready for me to pick up on my lunch break at 11:30 am, but the last few times I have been called at 9:00 am and she is done! They don't mind babysitting until I can get there to pick her up. |
I work for 2 groomers. How we do it there is people start to drop off their dogs at 8:00 in the morning. (They usually do 20 dogs a day.) They will ruff in a dog, that is they will clip toenails, brush the fur out and clip what needs to be clipped depending on the breed of dog. Then I (Im the bather) will take the dog that is ready to bath and give it a bath, clean the ears and do the anals. Then I will take the pup to the person that is drying that day and then they dry it with a dryer and if it is a big dog like a Lab they will hand dry it some then put it in the drying cage for a while to get the dampness off of him. Then when the dog is dry we take it back to the cage and when the groomer is ready for it she will finished him and call his mom and dad to say he is ready. So for doing 20 dogs a day we do it like that. Sometimes we get an old dog and the people want us to do it all at once so the dog dosnt have to stay all day.But that is how we do it where I work Everything goes in steps like that. The groomer finishes up while the other pets are getting their baths and blow dry. |
2-4 hours, which I'm not all that comfortable with. |
I took Kayah to petsmart a couple of weeks ago.. and when I asked they told me about 3-4 hours:confused: well.. we went in at 10:00 and by two when they still weren't calling.. I called them.. and they said another hour.. so at 3 I went in and they STILL weren't done!! needless to say I was Td off:mad: but at 3:30 when I finally got to take her.. I was soo pleased! the lady did such an awesome job! and The part I was happy about was that she called me and explained that the cut I had originally wanted for Kayah would make it look as if it were two different dogs.. and she explained exactly what she thought Kayah would look good with.. I agreed.. and I'm so happy.. but if you think a 3 hour wait is long.. try going 5 1/2 hours without your baby.. you'll go crazy |
It takes 2 - 2 1/2 hours for our groomers to shampoo and clip both of our girls. The groomer knows that we don't like them being kept in a cage, so they begin on both of them as soon as my husband drops them off and then they call him so he can pick them up. I just can't stand to think that they are scared sitting in those cages. |
Mine have never been groomed by anyone but me. I don't relish the idea of them sitting in those wire crates for hours without a potty break. I also don't like taking chances with them getting kennel cough. |
I think anything over 3 hours is a bit too long and you should consider going somewhere else especially if you had to wait a whole day once.. |
I drop Sadie off at 8:00 a.m. and pick her up at Noon. Never has been a problem. |
Conner just got groomed on Friday. I dropped him off at 9:30, and they told me I could pick him up at 1 p.m. He was fine. He loves to see the other dogs, and they even had a bunny rabbit that was boarding. |
I have three babies that now go to the groomers. Two hours seems to be about average. But honestly I am not real thrilled and they do seem a bit overpriced. Next month I am going to try a place that DaisyMae06 recommended. Don't know if I will be able to get all three in at the same time or not. |
My groomer usually does mine in about an hour! She does it out of her house and does a wonderful job!!! |
It probably depends on if you live in a big busy city or a farm town. I know here it takes 3 to 4 hours no matter what groomer they go to. |
My groomer takes 2 hours to do both my furkids...she is awesome too!! Love her!! Dawn |
My hubby and I bathe the furbabies, clip nails, express anal glands if (necessary), clip hair (if necessary, but we are growing their hair out), clean ears, brush, comb, blow-dry, finish... Plus, I'm so scared of them catching something or someone hurting them...I know, I'm paranoid! I guess if I were to find someone who would come to my home to groom them, and I could watch, but then what would be the point. LOL We might as well do it ourselves...Oh well :) |
I thought about this as well. it always seems they take all day to have my dogs done when i take them to the groomer but i have since tried another groomer and it was about the same so i guess thats normal. I took Oliver my pom and anna my yorkie in a few weeks ago and they both got their hair cut i dropped them off at 10 in the morning and she called when they were done and she called arround 3 and saind they would be done at 330 i went early and oliver was still getting some work done he didnt like me being there he imediately wanted down. |
I used to take mine to the groomers and they would give me a "special" appt. where I would bring him in and they would do him immediately and would be done within the hour. I did it this way because I did not want to leave him there just to "sit" and wait to be done and they were very accomodating to me. After hearing some groomer "horror stories" though, I have since decided to just groom them myself. The only thing I bring them in for is to have their nails clipped because Im afraid to do that.:( |

My advice is call around - look for a groomer that does one on ones (your dog is the only dog in the shop) You may pay a bit more but if your dog gets individual care and is in and out within a couple hours believe me it is worth it!! My clients LOVE my service. When their dog comes I give it my full attention - no other dogs are caged and barking creating stress. Please - if you don't get a good feeling dont leave your dog!! |
45 minutes to an hour by appointment only. We go once a month. It never, ever takes her any longer. |

I once job shadowed during highschool (like 3-4 years ago) at a vet/groomer and they made us help groom dogs and cats all day. and the lady doing the groomings washed all the dogs and cats with dawn dish soap, i was apalled and needless to say i dont take my pets to that vet or that groomer i wouldnt want my dogs washed with dish soap if i wanted that done id do it myself at home. she charged quite a bit to for dish soap bathing lol. |

As for the Dawn dish liquid - some groomers feel that washing a really oily dog with Dawn helps however if a groomer uses quality shampoos and understands a dogs coat they don't resort to using subsitute products. All the more reason the public should push for groomers having to be licensed by their states - just as a hair stylist is. |
