Baby Maggie's hair is pitiful Do any other owners of little puppy yorkies have concerns about their hair....Maggie's hair looks like she stuck her tail in a light socket :eek: ...None of it lays down and there are thin spots in some areas.....Is there puppy hair versus adult hair?.....OMG she looks pitiful!!!!! Max, our 4 year old, was basically a rescued dog and has lovely hair....Maggie is a high dollar puppy and looks like a halloween costume with a precious face. My husband is bemoaning the fact that she cost so much and looks so funny :o .....I love her to death but unless her hair changes we may keep her in PJ's, sweaters, t'shirts or a body cast :D :D :D I thought about cream rinse....etc....but don't know if it will help... Did any of you all have a puppy with pitiful hair that finally grew a great coat .....if not just lie to me....I need the encouragement :eek: Max and Maggie's Mom |
1 Attachment(s) Is Maggie's hair thin on her legs? How old is she? Usually the yorkie puppies that are real nice silk have thin hair as puppies, and when the adult hair comes in it is a nice mat free silk that is great to groom. This is my Miana, and she looked quite scruffy for a while with wild hair and the hair on her legs was very thin but she is filling out nice now. This picture was taken when she was 3 months old, and now she is 5 months. |
I forget how old little Maggie is, but she may be like Toto. Her coat has just begun to look good within the last few months! She is almost 16 months now. Dr. Lucy gave us some stuff when we went through the carpet allergy and Toto's hair was coming out a while back. I believe the name of it is "Repair" ... it's a beige color and thicker than honey! It really did a world of good for Toto ... and really brought her hair under control. Our problem since we are in Colorado and it's cold, is static electricity!! When I pull her shirts off, she looks like she has been electrocuted!! :eek: |
Hallelujah....there is hope for Maggie Maggie is 14 weeks old....she does have thin hair on her legs......in fact in several places actually....there is not a wave, a curl or a bent hair on this animal.....it is absolutely straight and sticks out all over her little body....she looks like a little black dust mop......pitiful....her ears are not erect yet either.....so I guess you can't go by the price you pay for these little squirts....Max was basically a "throw a way" dog in the back of a pet store...and he is beautiful......but I wouldn't trade Maggie for anything....well maybe trade her hair :D :D If I have to have chemotherapy for my illness....I will lose my long hair....thinking about donating it to Maggie ;) Max and Maggie's Mom |

He looks so much bigger in the 2nd pic! But you can still see his cute face grown up there. Is it me or does anyone else just love to look at Yorkie pictures? I never get sick of looking at pix! :) |
He actually is big, over 5 lbs. The first picture is of him at 2 months and he has actually doubled in size since then (if not more) at 4 months. But I think it's the camera angle that makes him look rather large lol. And like you I could never get sick of seeing pictures of other Yorkies, they are all so cute!! |
Max & Maggie's Mom, be patient with the little girl! :) At 14 weeks she is still young ... Toto's ears didn't pop up until she was about 16 weeks and her hair didn't begin to look like hair until much, much later!! Now is the perfect time to get her used to daily brushing and grooming! I brushed Toto when she didn't have enough hair to "say grace over" and even though it didn't ever look brushed, it gave us great bonding time and now she likes to be brushed and will roll over to have her tummy brushed!! The only problem I have is with Toto's topknot ... the hair on top of her little head is sooo thin! The groomer we used to use sold us a "de-matting" tool to cut the bad mats up where they could be brushed out but when I realized what that thing does to the coat, I don't use it!! :eek: I patiently work with the bad mats until I get them out and although a little hair comes out, it's still not as bad as that tool!! ;) Ranger's Mom, I think Ranger is an adorable little boy. I actually miss Toto's puppy hair! It seemed like one day she was a shaggy little baby and the next day she had long hair and we were wondering where our baby went!! :p They mature all too soon!!! ;) |
If you really want the ears to stand up you can tape them up. I do this to mine because I am planning on showing them, but for a pet I never bothered. Have you shaved the ears, the weight of the hair on the ears when they are puppies also hinders the standing. You don't think it would matter much, but it does. |
Luna, who is almost about 11 weeks old, has wild puppy hair. Her ears haven't stood up fully... although last week she had one straight up and the other still down (as you can probably tell from some of the pictures). But then this week they are both down again... the breeder had shaved the tips of her ears, but it seems like her hair may be growing faster than the ears will stand up. I think time will tell. I really don't mind if her ears stay down or up, even though they look cuter up... hehe bettyanne: how'd you get Toto to like being brushed? Luna won't stay still unless we brush her when she is asleep. I am assuming that it's because she is a puppy. Suggestions? |
Maggie's a BABY!! Don't worry I'm sure she'll be a beaut!! Gizzie Chavi is getting on for 4 months and has lots of hair everywhere but it only looks nicce after she has an occasional bath and that's only for a day!! Ana xx |

Melissa, before we taught Toto anything else, we taught her the single word, "No". We just used a "firm" voice, not threatening, mean or loud! I believe that the biggest mistake when trying to teach them is to use mean, hateful tones or slap them around. I have seen that done along with hitting with newspapers! It makes me angry to see and hear this as it is absolutely not necessary! Once Toto grasped the meaning of "no" we moved on to other simple one word commands such as, "sit" & "stay". Early on in the brushing process I would insist that she allow me to brush her for only a few minutes at the time by holding her still. After she learned "no", I began to simply restrain her with the word ... still brushing no longer than a few minutes at the time! I simply let her know that she was going to be brushed and it could be pleasant! Gradually she would get in my lap when I called and showed her the brush and the day she turned over for her belly to be brushed ... I swear I heard the "Hallaleauh Chorus"!!! It just takes patience and persistence ... it's amazing how quickly they learn "routine"! I'm now just waiting for the day she brings me the brush!! ;) |

My Snoodles is almost 10 months old now. Her hair is starting to look better. I do put conditioner in a spray bottle and spray a little on her before I brush her. They said never to brush her dry, as it ruins the hair. I loved the look when her ears were down, in fact, my husband didn't want them to go up, but up they did go! I can't keep a bow in her hair, and it frustrates me, but I haven't seen too many with bows in their hair for long. She doesn't like being groomed. But I do it every morning, along with teeth brushing and eye cleaning. Even though she doesn't let me know she likes it, after breakfast, she sits by the sink waiting for her grooming----lpprobably the treat afterwards! Pat |
I think she just has that puppy hair that will be replaced by beautiful Yorkie hair and I wouldn't worry ! My Cherish has really fine hair that looks good for maybe 10 minutes if I'm lucky...then it's back to ratty looking and I don't worry a bit ! She'll have whatever she'll have ! After my Chanel and her tons of hair - one with thinner hair is a piece of cake ! I give mine extra calcium. When they are teething it takes calcium away from their ears . I either give a pill form or feed them cottage cheese. I also shave their ears, and have taped them. |
Hi ! Went to the above web site, and it said the page could not be displayed etc. This is the second time I got this. Will keep trying! It's getting so cold here, I feel sorry for my little one having to go outside to go potty. I did make it a coat with double fleece. It's going to be really bad when it gets 20 or 30 below zero. Did make her booties, but she lays down and rolls around the floor like she was shot! Still trying to get those abows to stay in! Pat |

I'm in Butte, Montana. We're in a valley surrounded by mountains. The cold gets trapped in here and doesn't leave for a week or two. If you look up Butte, Mt. on the net, you will see where it was 54 below zero once. My kids came back for X-mas, and their cars were froze up, tried to pull them, and their tires were froze flat. It really does get cold here. I dread it! We are the same elevation as Leadville, Colo. A mile high! Pat |

Hi, Max's Mom, I am going through the same thing with Nemo, that is why I was so upset when I took him to petsmart and they shaved him after I asked them not to, my concern was his hair was thin, and even thinner on his legs, and now it looks like he has no hair on his legs and thighs because of the poor cut he received, and right now his coat it is all over the place completely straight, my mom and aunt calls him "wild man".... they say he always look wild when they see him, I have to fight with him to get his hair brushed everyday, which after the struggle it always look the same as before I brushed it, so don't think you are the only one going through it, I know my little one's hair has been a concern for me from day one, because my friend who bought a puppy from the same litter, Nemo's brother his coat is very thick and pretty right now.... |
DON'T WORRY!!! Puppies always go through the "bad hair" stage! Mia had the worse, she lost practically all the hair on her chest before it grew back into a beautiful healthy coat. I also use Chris Christenson system products which I think really changed her hair from matted and cottony to silky and really shiny! I use the day-to-day shampoo and conditioner and I spray the Ice-on-Ice leave-in before brushing her. I've told a bunch of people about it and many have told em they couldn't believe how great it worked! You can buy them at www.chrissystems.com. Gosh I love that dog! She is just a darling! Her toy is bigger than she is! You must tell me how you keep the bow in and what kind it is. As Snoodles isn't much bigger than Mia. I thought it was because kshe was little , so maybe didn't have enough hair on her head. Give ma a hint! Pat |
Hi Pat, I got tiny snap-clips from CVS pharmacy, they were 18 for $2 and they were in the hair section with the kids stuff. It stays in well and its easy to put in! |
WE don't have a CVS Pharmacy here. I bought some of those snap clips and glued a bow on them, but they didn't work. She shakes her head, and bingo they are gone. I have to admit I haven't found any really little ones. About how long are they? Thanks Pat |
They are really tiny, about 3/4". I bet you could find them at any pharmacy or Walmart or Target I bet. |
Wow! That is tiny! They don't have them at Wal-Mart as I bought the littlest I found there. Have looked at the dollar stores also. Will keep looking! Thanks for the answer.
