would you get offended? just curious, but would you get offended if you had a big dog and someone who had a little dog came and when they saw your big dog, they just immediately pick up their dog and not let them play with yours? i was reading in another post how people always pick up their yorkies when they see another big dog.. and i do it too, people always think im paranoid.. i mean i dont make a big scene but i do pick her up fast.. sometimes the owners of the big dogs look offended... is it offensive? |
I dont think they should be offended. It is better to be safe than sorry especially if the big dog is not on a leash. |
I pick Murfee up when a big dog is around but mostly for the big dogs sake. Murfee doesn't know he is small and will try to take on anything. |

I have a mastiff and 2 yorkies. We don't normally get that reaction since we all walk together. I have had people do it when He and I walk without the littles, but I am not offended Little dog people are scared of an unknown big dog and they probably should be. You never know if someone may or may not have control over their animal. Even a big dog trying to play can be too rough for little ones. |
No one should take offense to it...in my opinion. It only takes one time. And, that friendly family dog that is 3 times your dog's size may be in a bad mood the day it meets your dog. Accidents happen all the time. It is our responsibility as dog owners to make sure that those accidents don't happen. |
I have a big dog that my Yorkies dearly love and Boo loves the Yorkies..... When I am out and there is even a medium sized dog around, I snatch up the yorkies. I try to be discrete, but the safety of my Yorkie kids is #1. If someone wants to get offended, that is their choice :) On the other hand, I would EXPECT someone to pick up their little dogs if I was walking Boo -- not that Boo would cause any problems, but I would like to see the owners concerned enough about the safety of their kids to pick up first and ask questions later:D |
I, personally, would be. Only b/c I have owned big dogs before and could never figure out why people would run like the plague when they saw them. Even though they were walking perfectly on a leash. When I was at a dog park or such, I wouldn't let my big dog play with the little ones, only b/c they don't know their own strength sometimes, but a lot of the little ones, especially chi and doxies would love to play with them. However, if I see any dog in general, big or little, pulling at their leash, barking, growling, walking their owner, ect. Whether my dog was big or little, I would move out of the way and/or not allow my pet to play in the same area as it. |
LOL -- knowing MY yorkies -- I should probably pick up Boo the Boxer if I saw Yorkies coming --:D |
I don't think that would upset me in the least, but yesterday when we went to Home Depot with Zada and Azrael I passed a man with a little girl in the cart and one walking by him around 4 years and she wanted to pet the pups and her dad said "don't touch those things" and didn't even look at me so I told him they were NOT things and she should teach his kids better. |
Since I own a big dog I can tell you that I wouldn't be the least bit offended. All you are telling me is that you think my dog is capable of harming yours and you don't want to take any chances. You aren't accusing my dog of doing anything wrong. Why should I be offended by that? You are not paranoid either! Ivan could probably kill a little one by stepping on it since he weighs as much as a human. Buy he is gentle and careful around Adie and Cassie. |

People that do get offended are more than likely reacting out of a lack of knowledge. They are probably not aware how fragile our Yorkies are.I too pick mine up when big dogs are around as her protection is my first priority. She does play with some larger dogs, but only ones we know well that are gentle in nature. :woof: :woof: :) |
Example: We were at the beach walking Bella and there were all sorts of big dogs not on leashes. We didn't have any problems, any time a big dog was interested in Bella or got really close I picked her up just to be on the safe side. One dog tried to jump on me! It wasn't aggressive but it was dominate so I backed it off and told it who was boss and the owner just stood there and said "don't worry hes friendly" I don't care how friendly a dog is they shouldn't be jumping on ppl. That is a dominate behavior! She is only 7lbs and some of those dogs looked like they weighed at least 100 lbs. I have owned big dogs in the past and my parents still do. I don't mind as long as I know the big dog. Other wise I will chose to be safe than sorry. My husband thought I was paranoid but that night we were watching ER Vets on Animal Planet and a puppy had his eye poked out by a big dog and had to have surgery. If anything like that ever happened to my dog I would have killed the owner of the aggressive dog. |
Maybe it is just our area, but when I take Sissy and Angel to the park and we're walking around the park, if someone with a big dog is walking toward us, they always go to the other side of the street. |
