I pick up Pepper when I see a dog off leash. On leash, I always look at how the owner handles the dog and the dog's body language. I'm always ready to pick him up in case. But had no problems with bigger dogs that are friendly. About being offended? If I do pick up Pep, I couldn't care less what the owner thinks. Isn't it embarassing for them if they can't control their dogs anyway? |
It can take as little as one second to kill a yorkie, and its not like yorkies are not going to start trouble because we all know they can. So unless you know the big dogs and unless the owners have their dog under control, pick up your dog and don't give it a second thought. Thats is our job to protect our yorkies!!! |
Like everyone else I pick up my Yorkies when I see big dogs coming. You just don't know the termperment of a strangers dog and it isn't worth the risk. Not only do I pick up my Yorkies when I see big dogs but also younger children. I know this may offend some and that's not my intention but I've had so many young children want to pick up my pups. They don't ask if they can they just go after them. My pups squirm and I'm so scared they'll get dropped or stepped on. I just wish ppl would teach their children not to assume it's ok to pet or pick up someone else's dogs. I wouldn't run up to a human baby and just pick it up and expect the parents to think it was ok. JMHO |
I have a big dog and I don't get offended when someone picks their dog up, but Max is on a leash, only off leash on my property, but you better believe I pick my yorkies up :) |
I always ,always pick Cookie up if a big dog is headed towards us. I would not mind if we had a big dog and they know each other for a long time and our big dog would not hurt my little one. But... if it's a new dog walking towards us ,we just don't know how it will react to my little "rat". I prefer to pick up Cookie instead of regretting not picking him up.If the big dog's owner is offended,um well I'm sorry about that but I prefer to be safe. My husband walks Cookie when we go to some downtown shops and he carries him if he sees a little puddle of water up ahead! My hubby is way over protective with Cookie and does not care who hears him. Sometimes we'll be in a pet clothes boutique and a bigger dog walks in and my hubby talks loud " Pick him up!" or he says " Big dog,pick him up" I havent seen anyone get upset ,they usually say " OMG he's so tiny" and understand why I'm picking him up lol Genie,Cookie & Lola |
I would walk Sophie to the other side of the street if a larger dog was in our path. She was small, a lease causes more fear for them when confronted with a bigger dog sniffing around. So, being very protective, I would pick her up and when they passed, set her back down to continue our walk. Why take a chance because Yorkies think they are bigger than life, but it only takes one bite to cause injury. So, I am with you... |
Some big dog owners probably get offended because they think that us w/ little dogs are assuming the big dogs are mean. If I don't know the dog and the dog is real close, I pick Rocky up, if were on the other side of the street though then I just keep walking with him. It's always better to be safe than sorry, and I'd rather offend someone then take a chance of Rocky getting hurt, or like some others have already posted, our little ones sometimes think that their bigger, and I don't want him to start going after a dog of any size! |

the other day i was walking lexi and a big dog with owner was coming towards us of course lexi was going nuts barking like crazy , anyway as they got close to us, i was scooping lexi up and the owner says does she bite, i say no, but i dont trust your dog.. she said oh its ok i said no its not and she said yes, its ok i said no its not now get away.. dont you think that owner came close with her big dog and that dog opened his mouth on lexi to bite her head off,, thank god i was holding her back... the lady felt so stupid and kept apoligizing as she walked away... you see, you never know... i know lexi wanted to eat that dog.. ha |

Better safe then sorry. But I would approach them & ask if there dog likes other dogs & let them smell eachother . Then from then on maybe they could say hi on their leashes. I have heard to many stories of little dogs being ripped apart right on the end of their leashes at the foot of their owners by bigger dogs. I like big dogs. But you dont take chances. Be friendly introduce them if its someone & there dog that you meet several times on a walk. Let them become friends. If the dog growls or anything forget it, maybe try again later. Let the big dog smell your hand & get a pet then introduce the dogs. Most likely the little one will have the additude:rolleyes: |

Well...I have a very large dog at almost 100 pounds. We go to the beach several times per week and he is the friendliest guy. I guess the other dog owners can sense that because they very rarely pick their tiny ones up when walking past him. Probably because they see our 2 little girls with him. HOWEVER...most of the time he gets nipped at by the little dogs! HAHA. So I wish more people would pick their little ones up if they are going to bite my Blitz's ankles. LOL My big guy gets bullied by the little ones quite often.:p |
I don't pick up my babies when a big dog comes near, as long as it's on a leash, I just simply ask the owners if their dog is okay with small dogs, if not then we just go around him. We also have 2 big outside dogs that my babies are used to being around, so they are not terrified of big dogs. Although I do have one baby that when put on a leash he becomes fearless, so I have to watch him. |
