Is it okay to have one yorkie? I currently have one parti yorkie. The man who I got here from called and asked if I wanted her sister, because he is moving and can't not keep her no long. Is it okay just to have one dog? SHe is happy, I work, but she usually stays home, and sleep(Her favorite past time). I had a friends dog for the weeked, and my dog seemed to be annoyed of her after a while. Should I get the other dog? |
It's ok to have just one they get all the love! But if you want another one it's twice as fun with 2. |
I would think her littermate would be an excellent playmate for her but it's really up to you whether you want 2 dogs. Can you afford having 2? If so, then I say go for it. Having two is so much more fun. |
It takes time to get used to a new friend, but I recommend having two if they are at home by themselves. It keeps them from being lonely. Still it is OK to have just one. |
That's pretty much a personal choice, I think. Those here with two or more will tell you it's the best way to go and it may be for them but I have one Yorkie (inside) and an Australian Shepherd (outside). I've always been a "one lap dog at a time" kind of person and have decided to only have one Yorkie. Tatum loves playing with her sister outside so between us and the kids and her sissy outside, she gets plenty of interaction and lots of cuddle time. There are definitely pros and cons....... I wish you luck trying to decide! |
I thought my one puppy was happy, until I got him a sister. Now both of them are extremely happy dogs. |
I only have one and she seems happy ofcourse shes got my pom oliver for a friend and I stay home so she has me. I wouldnt mind having another one tho. |
I have two and they are really happy to have each other. My breeder said they do better in pairs |
If you only want one , its ok . |
I think it's a great idea to have a playmate. It will take a little adjustment, but you will be glad you did!!! Go for it!! |

exactly! i love that answer.:D and having a breeder say that they do "better in pairs" sounds like a selling tactic to me. i am a sahm so romeo has me here. i think if it is done properly the pupppy will be fine. i really wonder about my neighbors yorkie - it IS at home along all day and it is a wild dog!! you can tell it has been locked up all day and can't wait to get out! |
All this "better in pairs" talk is making me want another one! |
Having only one Yorkie is fine as long as you provide the dog with plenty of activity in the am and the pm. If your not able to do that then a second one would fill that gap. That is an individual choice. Good luck whatever you deceide. It would be hard not to accept such an offer IMO. Is he giving the pup to you or are you paying for it? |

archie's mom, archie is soooo cute!!!:D |
Its funny that you ask that question because I have had Lulu for about 4 months and every where I go with her people always ask me if she is my only one or they tell me about their yorkies and they always have more then one! So I had wondered if they are better with a buddy!! The last thing I want to do is deprive her!!!! :aimeeyork Lulu |
if you can afford it i'd say go for it! Bentley was an only dog for awhile..then we got karlee and he hated her for the first week but now they are best friends!! they always follow each other around! |
I think it also depends on the dog. My Desi was not happy being home alone all day and when we got home she demanded a lot of attention. Getting Millie made a big difference in her life, now we are not the center of her universe. But, on the other hand, I once had a dog (Chihuahua) who was very laid back and was happy being by himself, when we got another dog was when our problems started. He just liked being the only dog in the house. So, getting a second dog depends on you and your dog. |
He is selling the puppy, and the father for 3,000 |
I have been considering getting JoJo a playmate since he loves to interact and play with other dogs but I have encountered several who are independent and do not really want to bother with another dog. When I visited my mother for two weeks I was so excited that her friend had a two year old Yorkie. Well the friend was right when she said he probably would not want to play and was very independent. He wanted nothing to do with JoJo. Recently I dog sat for my neighbor's Maltese and was hopeful for JoJo as well but this dog also had a very independent personality and did not want to play. If I get another dog, I am doing it so JoJo will have a playmate. In the meantime he gets all the attention and love and sitting in my lap that he wants! If you want your dogs to play, why don't you see how they get along together before committing yourself? Or maybe you want another dog for yourself regardless if they interact and then it might not matter. The majority of owners with more than one Yorkie seem to be thrilled with them but there are also posts about Yorkies living together who do not get along so be careful. Good luck! |
One dog or two 1 Attachment(s) :) :aimeeyork I own one little diva, Tinkerbelle, she is 4 years old and she is my little love but can be a little terror. I am at work for 9 hours a day and for the first couple of years she did well. I went on vacation for two weeks and my brother dog and house sat. I didn't want her to be in unfamiliar surroundings. No she's not spoiled at all. Anyway after that she developed seperation anxiety, as my brother was with her 24-7. So now it is heartbreaking when I leave for work as she barks and actually cries when I leave. I feel so guilty leaving my little girl. I am currently looking for a sister for her. It is a personal decision and I have made my decision for my girl and for me as well. Good Luck |

I was thinking the exact same thing!! |
I have another dog but im planning on getting 1 yorkie. im starting college & They only allow 1 small dog in the dorms. (my parents are keeping my other dog) |
Oh my, I am the wrong one to ask here. LOL. I have a little zoo going on here. If one is great, just think of how wonderful 10 animals will be. HA HA HA HA. My husband is always telling me to stop buying, rescuing, and saving the world. But in my defense all my babies have the best of everything. |
I have two and they love each other so much! They hate being away from one another. |
What???? one yorkie????? I never heard of such a thing! WHO can possibly have one yorkie??????? Seriously...just kidding! Good Luck and keep us posted!:) |
I have one but she has to cats her best bud is my male one, she loves to play with him, but he get tired of her sometimes, we are thinking of getting another, but I don't work and Phoebe get a lot of attention from us she thinks that everything is about her:p, we go out a lot, so one of my reason that I don't have another one is because I don't know how Phoebe is going to react and if is going to be hard to take two with me everywere like I do with Phoebe, anyway still considering to get another one;) |
Before you get a second one -- maybe round up some doggie friends for your pup to have play dates with. That might eleviate some of the feeling (on your part) that he's lonely. |
