What now? People that own big dogs and Yorkies HELP! Of course I can't have a Yorkie just yet but my husband informed me that if I get my dream dog he should get his. Well guess what dog he wants. A Freaking PITBULL! I for one am terrified of them b/c not only will have a Yorkie but I have 5yr old little boy. What do I do? Do any of you guys own pits and yorkies and small children? I'm so scared they'll turn on one of them and here in Alaska they'd both have to be indoor. I need advice!!! |
If he gets a pit bull I would not get a yorkie. That's just my opinion. There is a pit bull in the yard behind us and he wants to get at my yorkies so bad. He paces the fence and growls really mean at them. He is big enough to jump the fence. I am terrified for my babies and make them come in the house when he is outside. |
That's a tough one...I don't have any big dogs, so I won't be of much help, but I just want to say good luck! I know some people on here have big dogs and little dogs, so hopefully they'll have advice |

Maybe you could talk your husband into getting a Border Collie.I had a wonderful female border collie years ago and she treated my little Yorkie just like her own baby. She was so gentle natured, very maternal and protective. If I was out working in the garden and happened to look over at them.My Yorkie would often be perched on my border colllie's head like a little bird or else she would be wrapped between her front paws. They were so cute together. And the bonus was I didn't have to worry about circling hawks mistaking her for a little meal. Even when my Yorkie was very tiny my border collie was so incredibly gentle and careful.(My Border Colie was 40lbs) I would be concerned about the weight of a the type of dog your husband wants.Yorkies have very tiny and fragile bones and some of the larger dogs play quite rough.Good Luck! |
IMO If you got them both as pups and trained them I think A pit can be a gental as any other dog. make sure that you get from a breeder who breeds for a sound sweet dog and I think it would be ok I havd a golden retiver and the bigest problem I have is my male Yorkie wants to boss her around and guess what she does..... she just looks at him and walks off. If brought up right a pit can be good and sweet. JMO |

Even if you have the sweetest pitt bull the problem is their jaws are so powerful that even a play bite con be very dangerous not only for a yorkie but a child too. |
I'm so glad I'm no longer married. Sometimes, nothing you can do to agree. I'd be afraid of a pit bull around a yorkie. |
I would not get a pit bull even with out a yorkie.. They can be sweet dogs..depends on the way thy are raised.. but that breed gets stollen alot also and there jaws inter lock and they do not release..so I have heard.. Is your husband trying to scare you off from get a small dog..?? ask him if he would like a lab or a husky, they are remarkable dogs collies too.. |
I have a mastiff (100lbs) and two yorkies 6lbs and 4lbs. They all get along fine its all in the way the big dog is brought up he has a lot of respect for them. somtimes in play time he can get going too fast but you just have to watch the interactions. We have established "a pack" and they love each other we do everthing together hikes, vacations...it will be okay |
I dont know much about pitbulls......but i would try and talk him into another breed maybe a boxer? We have a yorkie and a german shepherd and they are total lovers. Especially if you raise them together as puppies they will bond instantly. Why not ask him if there is any other breed at all he would like and then really talk that breed up to him and even look up breeders in the area :) |
I wouldnt own a pit, just because they are so unpredictable. Yes they can be gentle dogs but one snap and thats it for the little one... i have a 95 lb. lab and she is fabulous around Hope and she and Tootie are best playing buddies... I still NEVER leave them alone together because the big dogs can really hurt a baby, even when they dont mean to.. Hope is not even as big as laci's head... LOL |

just something to consider. one of you will have to give in...or both of you. I just wouldn't risk it. JMO |
Not too long ago I had an English Bulldog and Louie, my first Yorkie. They were best buds. How about getting a Bulldog? Men usually love them and they are great family pets. I love the muscle tone that they have. But they are the sweetest dogs. We used to stud him out and go over and help raise the pups. It was alot of fun watching em grow up, cause they are cute pups. Just an idea.... |
