Fleas I have heard that yorkies do not get fleas because they have hair not fur. Is this true? |
Then why have I been buying flea medicine every month!!?? Never heard that! When I picked Bailey up when he was 8 wks old,, he had fleas! SO off to the vet we went. ;) |
Not true. According to my vet. |
They most certainly can get fleas! ;) |
I had a terrible time keeping fleas off my yorkie last summer. So far this year I haven'e seen any. |
I wish this was true. I have 9 yorkies and i spend over 100.00 a month on flea med. I tried the spray you use on your lawn to kill fleas in the grass. It has helped a lot this year. |
Lol! I am fighting a constant battle with fleas. Trust me...yorkies can get them. The Frontline that professes to work up to 3 months on most dogs...seems to only work for 3 weeks on Syd. By the way...even humans can get fleas...so I think that pretty much rules out the fur vs. hair arguement. :) |
They get fleas for SURE !! When I first got Chanel she came to us with them - It was sooo hard treating a yorkie that small - I was a nervous wreck but you can control it - and then treat monthly - Look carefully at their heads above their eyes and on their lower tummy area - fleas seem to be easier to spot in those areas - and of course if you see ANY scratching - check for fleas ...yorkies aren't big scratchers so if it isn't Fleas it could be shampoo... not rinsing enough... or a skin problem...but Fleas need to be ruled out first I spray my yard and 6 feet into my neighbors yard also for anyone with yards..it's really helped especially if your neighbors have dogs too - In 3 years I have never seen a flea on my girls |
Maybe you misuderstood Frontline. There are 3 doses in each box and you apply it once a month. At least that is my understanding for 2 dogs and a cat. :) |
jealous Red98Vett...I'm jealous...you have a yard. We have to walk on the sidewalk (through town) and Syd picks up fleas from every other dog that walks there. It is very frustrating. But I think that we finally have them somewhat under control. |

In a pinch - Dawn Dish soap also is a good flea killer and repellant - but the downside is putting it on a little yorkie - I imagine it would make them itch too ... |
don't buy that one bit. Even humans can have fleas in their hair! |
Yes, they do get fleas. I found out the hard way last fall. The boys all came down with them the same time! I check them every day and I saw them all scratching and I looked, FLEAS  !!! They weren't on any prevention because up until them they never had any, I think they got them from all the squirrels in our yard. Trouble was Andy is allergic to flea bites, his face swelled up and his ears were beet red I quickly gave him Benedryl, flea bath and a few days later started Frontlie Plus. They've been gone since... Theresa & The Boys :aimeeyork |
I'm wondering if you use frontline every month and then go without for a month to two months if they are still covered. My babies are scratching but I can't find anything. I skipped for a couple of months because it was winter and then suddenly it was warm. They are inside dogs and if they have fleas they have to have come from the outside dogs when they come in at night. They are way, way past due for a bath so they shouldn't be scratching because I washed out all their body oils. I try to put frontline on the at the begining of each month, the same with their heartworm pills, I find it the easiest way to remember. SS payday, buy the stuff and give it and I don't have to think about it again until next month. I also have been spraying our yard for ticks and fleas, but not yet this year. Sylvia |
