Fleas I have heard that yorkies do not get fleas because they have hair not fur. Is this true? |
Then why have I been buying flea medicine every month!!?? Never heard that! When I picked Bailey up when he was 8 wks old,, he had fleas! SO off to the vet we went. ;) |
Not true. According to my vet. |
They most certainly can get fleas! ;) |
I had a terrible time keeping fleas off my yorkie last summer. So far this year I haven'e seen any. |
I wish this was true. I have 9 yorkies and i spend over 100.00 a month on flea med. I tried the spray you use on your lawn to kill fleas in the grass. It has helped a lot this year. |
Lol! I am fighting a constant battle with fleas. Trust me...yorkies can get them. The Frontline that professes to work up to 3 months on most dogs...seems to only work for 3 weeks on Syd. By the way...even humans can get fleas...so I think that pretty much rules out the fur vs. hair arguement. :) |
They get fleas for SURE !! When I first got Chanel she came to us with them - It was sooo hard treating a yorkie that small - I was a nervous wreck but you can control it - and then treat monthly - Look carefully at their heads above their eyes and on their lower tummy area - fleas seem to be easier to spot in those areas - and of course if you see ANY scratching - check for fleas ...yorkies aren't big scratchers so if it isn't Fleas it could be shampoo... not rinsing enough... or a skin problem...but Fleas need to be ruled out first I spray my yard and 6 feet into my neighbors yard also for anyone with yards..it's really helped especially if your neighbors have dogs too - In 3 years I have never seen a flea on my girls |
Maybe you misuderstood Frontline. There are 3 doses in each box and you apply it once a month. At least that is my understanding for 2 dogs and a cat. :) |
jealous Red98Vett...I'm jealous...you have a yard. We have to walk on the sidewalk (through town) and Syd picks up fleas from every other dog that walks there. It is very frustrating. But I think that we finally have them somewhat under control. |

In a pinch - Dawn Dish soap also is a good flea killer and repellant - but the downside is putting it on a little yorkie - I imagine it would make them itch too ... |
don't buy that one bit. Even humans can have fleas in their hair! |
Yes, they do get fleas. I found out the hard way last fall. The boys all came down with them the same time! I check them every day and I saw them all scratching and I looked, FLEAS  !!! They weren't on any prevention because up until them they never had any, I think they got them from all the squirrels in our yard. Trouble was Andy is allergic to flea bites, his face swelled up and his ears were beet red I quickly gave him Benedryl, flea bath and a few days later started Frontlie Plus. They've been gone since... Theresa & The Boys :aimeeyork |
I'm wondering if you use frontline every month and then go without for a month to two months if they are still covered. My babies are scratching but I can't find anything. I skipped for a couple of months because it was winter and then suddenly it was warm. They are inside dogs and if they have fleas they have to have come from the outside dogs when they come in at night. They are way, way past due for a bath so they shouldn't be scratching because I washed out all their body oils. I try to put frontline on the at the begining of each month, the same with their heartworm pills, I find it the easiest way to remember. SS payday, buy the stuff and give it and I don't have to think about it again until next month. I also have been spraying our yard for ticks and fleas, but not yet this year. Sylvia |
I have a westie who is terriby allergic to fleas and lost all of her hair once because of it. So far, we have not had a proble since we got our yorkies but we use Advantage monthly to control it. |
I would like to know what you spray your yards with. I guess Gizmo gets them from the neighbors yard next door when he makes his visiting rounds. I work in the yard every evening and have never noticed fleas. What do you use and how do you apply it? :) |
I have heard that if you put Dawn dishwashing liquid in your yard it will kill the fleas. |
I use the flea and tick lawn spray sold at Walmart. It hooks to your garden hose and mixes as you spray. Im not shore of the brand, its out in the garage, but it is located in the lawn and garden dept. Also have it lowes home center |
Here in Texas, I use beneficial nematodes in my yard. Nematodes are a micro-organism that lives in the soil and eats the flea eggs. It will also eat fire ant eggs so you won't have any fire ant mounds in your yard either - YT'ers from the south will appreciate that! You get the nematodes from any organic gardening store. They are sprayed on your yard with water, they are not harmful to pets or anything else at all - much better than chemical spray. Of course, they do not prevent your dogs picking up fleas from other places. Anyway, I live in flea alley and we have not have any fleas (from my yard) in several years. My daughter's dog did come over a couple of weeks ago and brought us fleas but at least I know that they won't set up housekeeping in our yard. |
I think for it to work three months, you have to use three tubes. That's what I use for my babies. Does anyone know how soon you can safely flea the mommy after babies? |
I believe flea eggs can live a long time dormant in carpets and such. You should be able to see them. Mine scratch their ears a lot, it drives me crazy. Their ears look fine, the vet has checked them and I paid $45 for ear wash, they pulled the hair out, said no ear mites. I am back to shampoo or some sort of allergy :questione |
Laura, my vet told me to put it (Frontline) on mom after she nurses at night. I think the idea is that after the baby(ies) nurse and you put it on her the baby is asleep and it (Frontline) has time to dry before the babies can get into it. Sylvia |
