Ears..
 
Hi.. well we decided to tape Hannah's ears on Saturday night just to see what would happen.. she is 15 weeks.. first I let her go to sleep on my lap while we watch TV.. and while she is sleeping I trim the hair on her ears right down to nothing , on both the inside and outside.. have been doing this since she was 10 weeks.. Her ears were almost up .. just the top bit was still flopped over.. I took the tape off Sunday morning because I was going to bath her.. and I couldn't believe my eyes... :eek: they were up... after just one night taped. :thumbup: :thumbup: :thumbup: So just to make sure they stay up .. I taped them again lastnight.. and will leave them taped for a couple of days.. she isn't minding it at all. She is such a great little girl.. we just love her to death..
My saying to everyone that see's her is that " Everyone should have a yorkie " !

Love this site... so helpful.

Great!!!! But keep in mind not to overstress yourself, ears can go floppy on these lil ones until their permanent teeth come in....a few up until the age of 6 months....they are growing and using every bit of calcium in their lil bodies.

So, there is still hope up to six months? Renny's ears go up and down. he has been in tape almost ever since i have had him. i leave the tape on for five days and as soon as i take it off, they flop. he puts them up and down. Mostly down. they are very small and just the tips are flopping. i am at my wits end. thinking of selling him because of it. he is my new stud and i won't breed floppy ears. Four months old almost.

Sure, especially lil boys, that aren't being neutered, their male parts dropping and seating can be the cause too. Floppy ears is not always a hereditary factor.....along with what I mentioned before, ear infections can also be a contributing factor. The only thing that breeders need to do is be deligent, and if they are still flopping when they go to their forever homes, teach the family what to watch and how to tape. I've had my new families bring them back to me for ear trimming and taping....until they are held up solid.

Well we will love Hannah with her ears up or with them down. I will keep taping if they keep flopping.. but I think they are going to stay up . :cool:

Thanks, I am getting really frustrated with him. the others i bought as puppies have already had their ears up and all my litters have too. I really had to work on the gal I kept from my last litter tho. She has big ears like her daddy. yes, i do tell my families about the ears and how to tape them. Matter of fact, i just did that with a family last week that came to "look". i am hoping her puppy's ears will be up by the time she takes her tho. the other littermates are up. but, i'm telling you, I am really getting frustrated big time with renny. i am frustrated because I know he can hold them up if he only would. thanks again. And to the OP, you have done a great job with your baby. keep up the good work.

I really don't like to let them go until they're up.....but, there are occassion where after they go home they're a little loose, and new families are stressing...so, we tape and retape.

I even got a lil year old female in for grooming, ears were flopped over, and they had got her that way.....but, her ears had never been shaved/trimmed....did the regular yorkie trim with backs in a V all the way to the base, letting the ear fringes on the outer edges longer....ears came up immediately

Thank you.. she is the best thing that has happened to us.. me and my husband just got married in August.. I can't have any more children.. have 2 boys 10 and 16 . This is "OUR" little girl.. we just love her..:)

They are the best dog .. aren't they .

They are the best dog .. aren't they .

The ears will be fine and most likely stay up. By the way what's her Birthdate

Pip's ears were down when I got her at 7 weeks, they came up at about 5 months only to go down after a bad case of enteritus. They came back up at 7 months and they've stayed up ever since, no taping or trimming. Just be patient....

I have a 1 yr old female who had ears up from the beginning. Went down when she started teething. I've been shaving and taping for awhile now but they just won't stay up.

Is this better then shaving the whole ear?

I only do the complete shave when they're very lil puppies....before they open their eyes.

Now this dog wasn't my dog, I was grooming it, shaving down ears completely isn't something I would do to a clients dog.

Wow good to know - the groomer has always shaved her ears. She still does it every time I take her. By the way the groomer is also the breeder where I got this yorkie.

Yes, taping works. There are breeders out there with 35 years of experience that are doing it all the time.....

Lucy's ears flopped until she was about 7-8 mths. I didn't know about taping them - it's good to know. Her ears would take turns - one would flop the other would stand and vice versa - it was very cute!!! :animal36

I'm new at all this. Can you explain a little more on how you trim ears. I'm going to let them grow out and then do it the way you explained.

I don't understand when you say v in the backs all the way to the base :confused: And let sides grow out right?

It sounds like your puppy's ears are going to stay up. Harley's went through different phases when he was a puppy. His ears now fold but we prefer to keep his like this...we are used to it and think it fits his face and not only this, but his ears are HUGE when they are up.

Hannah's birthday is December 11 / 06. I took the tape off tonight. After 2 days, and so far her ears are standing upright. I'll keep and eye on them.. she looks so cute.. I wouldn't care if they stayed down.. but I prefer them up.

Great news.....Just wanted to know I have 2 boys here that were born on the 30th of November....so, they're just a few weeks apart...I've had to tape their ears up a couple of times....right now they're standing...they never went completely down, just a lil loose.

Sorry didn't see your post till now. There is a website Jonann's Yorkshire terriers, I'll double check. She explains trimming ears, and has illustrations....kind of hard to explain without them.

no, the taping works. my vet tried to talk me out of it too, said that only nature will determine if the ears stay up. maggies did flop a bit with teething but they are up. i don't think it is a myth...i have seen it work on many yorkies!

Yes, it is. When I was learning how to do show ears...people would just tell me how to do it....I just couldn't get it. So, instead of worrying about it so bad. I just took by trimmers to the show site and had the experts show me.

The Whal Peanut is really the best tool to get those sharp edges and manuver.

Vets go to school to make dogs well, they do not know the lil nuances of each breed. Although, very good vets usually have a breed specific breeders on their contact lists, that they confer with.
