Attempted theft My G you guess, this could have happened to Adie and me. I don't usually go to PetSmart without Adie but I had to do my grocery shopping so I just ran in to Petsmart real quick. On my way in I noticed these two older boys hanging around the door. They didn't smile back at me or act like they wanted to have anything to do with people coming in or out. Strange. While I was in the store there was a big commotion at the front of the store. It seems that these boys tried to grab a puppy out of the arms of a woman walking out. Fortunately the woman saw them coming and was screaming her head off before they got a good a good hold on the puppy. The boys took off running. I don't know if they were caught or not but I helped give the police a good description. One of the cops said they didn't know what they could do if they did catch them since they weren't successful and it would be the woman's word against theirs. Anything I could have said would be useless. How would you convince a judge that you "thought" they looked funny? Sigh. |
That stinks big time. I don't think the police will do anything unless the crime was actually committed. that is how they are around here anyway. It is so sad that someone will try to steal your pup right out of your arms. Some people are just so pathetic. |
What would posses someone to do that!! I just don't get it. Why steal someones pet?! There are tons and tons of puppies for adoption. It is the same as taking someones child. This is so scary, I am already afraid to take Percy out, to the dogpark, even sometimes for walks.....this is not helping what my husband calls my "puppy paranoia" |
That is so sad. Sounds like your "gut instinct" is in good shape. Hmmm, makes me wonder if those boys saw that video of the yorkie puppies that were stolen? |
That is scary that you cant even go in a petsmart without something like that happening. |

Thats awful to think we cant go anywhere safely with our furkids. I think I am going to make Pet Id's for my furkids and keep them in my wallet, this way alteast I have a great source for immediate identification!! |
I don't know why it still amazes mwe, but it does. I just can't believe what some people will do now days. What is wrong with people. |
I don't know if it was a Yorkie they tried to take (you didn't say..) but hearing about puppies and dogs being kidnapped all the time really stinks! Here is another reason why Yorkies being #2 most popular breed is a bad thing! |
Scary - I feel like buying a larger dog just to protect my two small yorkies! |
That's terrible. I don't know if they could get charged on attempted robbery, if their is that? Like attempted murder. |

Here is another reason why Yorkies being #2 most popular breed is a bad thing! The puppy looked like a Pom to me but I could be wrong. It was hard to see it with the lady holding on to it so tight. I agree about the paranoia! Adie loves to sit on the back of the couch and look out the window and high school kids walk by every morning and afternoon. I'm scared one of them might try to nab her when my husband is in the garage or back yard! The front door is ALWAYS locked and the back yard is fenced in with a lock on the gate. Thank God we have Ivan - I think he would try to kill anyone who tried to take one of the little ones. I just don't know if I will be taking Adie anywhere anymore, and the poor thing LOVES PetSmart! |

I was walking Percy earlier this week, and for the umpteenth time someone stopped me and was gushing on and on about him and how much they wanted/NEEDED one. When I asked if they knew anything about the breed, they didn't. Amazing. How do you get/want a dog and know nothing at all about them? It always reminds me of when I had my first dog, a little dachshund. Everyone always went on and on about how cute he was and how they would love to have one. Well, those are not easy dogs to care for, or train. Almost impossible to house break, very temperamental. Yet people see how cute they are and want one. |
Maybe these boys had a puppy that looked like the one the lady had at Petsmart and they lost theirs, so they decided to steel hers so their mom would not kill them when they got home! You never know what these kids are thinking about half the time! |

I have thought about this happening before when going to petsmart, now I know I'm not crazy. Lucy looks like a puppy even though she is not. And people and kids are always wanting to touch her, and they ask how old is your puppy. One time when I was walking Lucy at the park I passed a friendly elderly couple, the man said loudly (so I could hear) to his wife, " honey, hit her over the head and I'll steal her dog" then they laughed and told me she was adorable. But I thought you don't know how I have worried about that happening. |
Pinching Oh my, I go to my PetSmart every week to get Mim's something, I would never think that someone would do that. I thought I lived in a secure place. I will tell my foster sis to leave the dogs home she goes shopping and leaves the car on with it locked and A/C on for them because she lives in the downeast but now I think just leave them home, Mim's stays home with me and in her bag when we go to PetSmart  Where did we go wrong here? First the war now stealing dogs:mad: |
I'm getting more and more afraid to even take my babies out. All theses storeis lately are soooooooo scary. So sad that a day to petsmart ends up like this :( |
It make you wonder if some of the rescues were intended to be pets after having been stolen doesn't it! |
That is so scary:eek: And the main reason that I'm afraid to take our girls anywhere. I only go to the park with my husband, holding on to two rambunctious girls would be too hard for me,let alone trying to cave in the skull of anyone that even looked at my pups funny:laugh: I only let young kids pet them:p |
That is one of the main reasons Gabby and Gage do not go with me to the store. I'm just too afraid someone might try something and I'd end up in jail for murder. They do ride in the car to the vet, to the groomers, and when we go to our deer camp on week-ends, they go along too. Other than that, they are at home. We live out in the country and they have a nice fenced in backyard to run and play in (and we are out there with them). So very glad those boys were not successful in taking that precious furbaby! |
I take Bailey to Petsmart for training classes and one day as we were walking to my car an older lady in her car, driving slowly next to me started asking questions about Bailey. She asked if she could pet her and I said sure (Bailey had a harness on and her leash was wrapped around my wrist) Then she asked if she could hold her...this women is in her car, engine running, foot on the brake... I pulled Bailey back and said "No, she really get nervous if strangers hold her" At first I thought she was being friendly, then I became somewhat alarmed, I used my remote to jump into my car, lock the doors, then put Bailey in her carrier, and got out of there. My husband is always getting on me to stop being so polite all the time... |

Why is that? What if it was her purse instead of her dog? If you try to commit a robbery and get caught before you succeed, then you get charged with attempted robbery! This totally pisses me off. I really try NOT to be paranoid - Teagan loves walks, loves people, loves going to the pet store. She adores being petted and since she wasn't socialized much between the ages of birth and 2 years (previous owner), I am STILL working on this part of our relationship. She's a happy dog, but overly territorial and I want that to stop - but stories like this one make me paranoid. I know we have to be aware of our surroundings...but I start getting hyper-sensitive to innocent people wanting to pet her and I'm afraid she can sense my apprehension, so she behaves badly. Sometimes it feels like a no-win situation. Sigh. Sorry to rant, but it can be so frustrating sometimes! |
My dh and I were talking (again) about this whole thing last night. We decided that Adie can still go to PetSmart as long as she has her harness and leash on. No one will hold her but one of us and we will let people touch her head or paw but not her body. Now, I'm remembering taking Adie to class at PetSmart when a woman bent down over the fencing and picked her up without asking or anything! She had been talking to Angela (Melot's Mom) and me about how she used to have (or maybe has) a yorkie when she did it. I thought she was pretty rude since we were in the ring and in class to boot. It didn't dawn on me that she could have just run off with her! Geez was I stupid. I just pretended that Adie wanted her Mommy and took her back but I won't make that mistake again. What would you do in a situation like that? Adie was on her leash and I had a hold on it but still...... |

there seems to be a lot of this going on lately... it's too bad. there probably is nothing that you can do either most of the time-unless you catch them red-handed :( |
If someone tried to steal My dog at place like that I would scream at the top of myvoice that someone is stealing my dog. I could prove they were mine because they are microchipped |

It seems in the larger cities where there is a high volume of "serious" crimes, the police really don't have much time for the little things such as "attempted". They are so overworked. Most times it's the people who just take charge so to speak. Don't let these "druggies" ruin your fun with walking and shopping with your dogs. We can't just keep them inside all the time. TAke something with you that you can use to knock them senseless if they so much as "attempt" to take something from you. Do as we are told to do to stay safe. Don't park by a van or truck, don't park in parking ramps, don't go to your car if you see anyone just standing around, or anyone just sitting in the car next to yours and so on. Just use precautions and ask your local police if your allowed to carry pepper spray or mace. Also ask them when they will have their self defense class and attend them. |
