need info on puppy having her first heat... hi all.. i think Sasha is having her first heat. She's almost 7 months now and this morning there was some stain (maybe blood) on her behind. How old are they suppose to have the first heat? how long will it be? is it better to keep her in her cage since we have a male golden retriever? will she change behaviour ?won't eat, less active etc? i tried to find a thread about this but couldnt find it.. so any info would be helpful... thanks !!

Is your golden retriever neutered? My female maltese came into heat for the first time a few months ago and she drove our male golden retriever nuts! (and the rest of us I might add)Especially since he is fixed. Small breed dogs can come in to heat that young or even over a year old. And yes their behavior does change! They can be moody, mean, sweet, motherly, not eat, eat more, hump other dogs, sleep a lot, be hyperactive etc. I think it depends on the dog. They do bleed for quite a few days, but they seem to keep themselves very clean.

Gucci has her first heat last month. She slept more and her appettite change a bit. Some days she didnt wanted to eat and other she will pigged out. Her behavior also change a bit somedays she just wanted to be on her bed and others she wanted to be with us. If your male dog is not neutered defenitely keep them separate. The heat cycle will last around 3 weeks. They do keep themself pretty clean but of course you will see some stains. I think they get heats every 6 months. Good luck.

thank you for the reply . glad to hear that they can keep themselves clean. thats why I wonder.. how come her butt is still clean while there was stain in the floor. She seems more quiet .. and easily annoyed. She barks more when there's stranger in the house.. I though she was just being protective. Do she'll bleed for approx 3 wks? whoa thats quite a long time huh..

| My experience with Kali and her first period - her vaginal lips swolled up to a monstrous size and so did her nipples. There was blood everywhere because the breeder had urged us to try and let her keep herself clean, so we didn't do anything but praise her when she washed. If she drops as much as one drop of blood next time she has her period, she will be on diapers for the rest of her life - my white couch - ARGH! We were told she would bleed for 12 days and then be horny for 12, but she bled for almost a month and tried humping the small dogs head almost every day *lol* Good thing little Mare can say no for herself! She was VERY thirsty - surely it must be the bloodloss, so we filled her waterbowl a couple of times a day instead of just once. I hope I will have forgotten how irritating this was when it is Mares turn!
