Which is better: Collar or Harness Charlie's been wearing a collar, but i read on here in a different thread that they're dangerous to have the leash attached to. So, is it a safety issue that i should get him a harness for walks, or is it more of a preference? |
harness is best because of their delicate neck. they can have a collapsed trachea if a collar is used and they are pulled too hard. |
I agree, a harness is best, especially if your pup is a leash-puller. It's safer, and you can also lift the dog by the leash if it encounters unexpected danger (like an agressive or large dog), and your pup won't be harmed in the least. There are some new harnesses out there now that look like little vests, and I prefer these new ones to the traditional harnesses I've used previously. |
is there a reason for that, besides that it's more fashionable? |
And where do you put the license on a harness? Or do they wear both, and you just attach the leash to the harness and not the collar? |
Please do not put collars on our precious yorkies. It will hurt their necks, i.e., tracheas. Their tracheas are very little and sensitive. It will do permanent damage. :( |
By the way, Charlie is a biggie... maybe a silky. He weighs 12 pounds now so he's not really "tiny"... small yes... but a little more stout. Okay, so, no collars ever? Again, where does the license (tags) go? |
There's a ring you can put their license on, or just use a collar for that purpose only. And, please do not leave either harness or collar on in the house. |
there is a yorkie in my neighborhood that has his tags attached to a collar that he wears but the leash it attached to the harness they put on for walks. |
One of my yorkies is big, too. She's (I hate to say it) 18 lbs! Okay, she's a little overweight, but she is on a diet! lol :p |
I have both collars and harness. My dogs usually wear their collar for their tags and ID when we travel. I also have them on collars when they train. For long walks in the parks I have them on the harness. |
I have to have Starsky in a harness. His trachea is really sensitive. He even coughs a little getting toys out of the toy box, because the box rubs against his neck. Harness is the way to go and try to find a step in harness. Much easier to put on. Don't have to put over pups head |
My boys always wear their collars with their tags on them, but i never attach a leash to the collar. For walks, I put their harnesses on and attach the leash to that (keeping the collar on as well). This seems to work well for us. |
I don't like collars, It can get cought on things and choke the dog to death. i use harnesses on all my dogs the tag can go where they hook the leash. |
do you keep the harness on your dog all the time? Even at home? |
