Toto has been wearing a collar w/a bell from the day he came home its not tight either its actually pretty loose. And when we take him for walks we leave it on we just use a harness. I don't think that the collar is doing anything wrong because its not tight at all its actually probably save himself from getting stepped on since the we can hear the bell where ever he goes. |
When Jack walks it is like he is on a mission. He is getting better at pulling though. We use a harness to walk him, but when I take him to work I leave a collar on him behind the counter just in case someone opens his gate and I have to grab him. A harness would be to cumbersome all day. I take the collar off at home. |
I usually put his harness on when we take him for walks to put his leash on and take it off when we get home. He almost always has his collar on with his tags on it though. It's pretty loose, and it doesn't bother him at all. He's a little over 8lbs. |
I Have both. But only put the leash on the Harness due to the Yorkies extremly fragile necks/throats. plus i'm scared of their trachea collapsing due to the collar with the leash on since My Yorkies love to tug. I only put the collar on with their ID tags on. or I have the collars just for looks, i have the ones with the rhinestone lettering named ones. :D |
I tell buyers of my puppies never to use a collar for the reasons already covered in the posts. Collars scare me alf to death.. |
Oscar wears a collar with a tag on it at all times (except bath time). He's seven pounds--not a small yorkie. I've learned from one of my other dogs being let out of my fenced yard that I might not have seen him again if he hadn't been wearing his tag. Oscar does wear a harness for walks--it is much safer for his neck than attaching the leash to the collar. :) |

I have a harness for Peanut, for all the reasons stated already. He wears a traditional harness that I leave on him all the time (except for bathing obviously). It is kept somewhat loose, but not too loose. Peanut has already chewed through 2 harnesses by getting his bottom jaw around it when the groomer put it back on too loose. The tags attract his attention, but the harness itself doesnt seem to bother him. Oh, his tags are on the little ring at the front of the harness. Hope this answered your questions. |

Our vet says no harnesses on these little guys bc their tracheas are very fragile, so harness only. I put the id on the d-ring. Also he says never to let them wear a single thing when you are not with them bc they can get caught and it could be fatal. No clothes, bows, collars or harnesses. If you need somthing to get him into fast you could get a step in harness with the leash attached. Brooke has them on her site and they are really nice and only $20 for the whole leash/harness deal! |
My babies have their collars with their rabies, name tags and a bell on them. A different style or size for each of them so I know someone is underfoot and who. When we use a leash, they wear a harness. They wear their collars all the time unless I forget to put them back on after their baths. I have no fenced yard and if they should escape I know all anyone would have to do is remove their collars and they could keep my babies but I would hope they'd be too honest for that. |
Both my dogs wear collars - and I have never had any problems with them. They pull at the line as puppies and it is easier for me to control how hard I yank to teach them not to pull with a collar I think. I have however thought of a harness, but haven't found one I really liked. But that would be mostly for the looks and not until the little new one is done with leash training. |
Pip wears a collar with ID tag [I never put pets name on an id tag though] but I never attatch a lead to it. I walk him in a little harness. :D |
Mojito wears a harness when he's on leash for all the reasons everyone stated. He actually has a step-in harness as well as a mesh, vest-like harness that has velcro closure. We prefer the mesh harness because it provides excellent support but will probably start using the step-in harness when he gets a big bigger. I carry him around in a bag and heaven forbid he should try to jump out ,the harness would keep him from hurting his neck. (We like the "Cloak and Dawggie" brand but I know there are others out there.) He also wears a collar but just for his ID and rabies tags -- in nyc they can write you a ticket if your dog isn't carrying the tags! |
