Well...... I am a 25 year old full time working gal, so let me give you my experience. First off- it is a lot of work and responsibility (i.e. I can't just go out and meet friends after work, I have babies that need to be fed, and go potty at home first!). But, mine both stay at home for 8 hours a day, alone, and they do just fine. Willow is even a tiny baby, and we just make sure she has plenty of food and water, and she has not had any hypoglycemic episodes. When we get home, they are, what we call, "full of it". Jumping and bouncing and yapping all over us, it's great. They are needy, but I have all the love in the world to give to them. One note-going on vacation anywhere takes more planning. They aren't like cats that you can just leave with plenty of food and water-it's like having children! There are going to be days where it seems all you do is clean up pee and poo. They do need lots of love and attention and DISCIPLINE, especially while they are young and are more easily(and I use this word loosely) trained. For us, working does not seem to interfere with our training process. Biscuit was a quick learner, and so too is Willow. Right now we are only doing one 5-10 minute training session with her a day. Just the basics, sit, stay, down, quiet. Potty training is another story. Maybe you'll be lucky and they will take right away, but don't count on it. It took Biscuit about a year to be fully potty trained, and I am not expecting Willow to be any faster. It's not like we don't have a life, but my boyfriend and I are kind of homebodies during the week, we may go out one weeknight, but other than that we're at home with our furry kids. When I can, I take them with me. Second-It can be pricey. Puppy shots, kennel cough, spay/neutering, all supplies and food, and any other unforseen expenses can add up quickly. Having said this, I wouldn't trade them for anything, to me it is TOTALLY worth it. It really is up to you, no matter what anyone else says. I personally am very maternal and love to take care of people, animals etc. We have 2 yorkies, 2 cats, 2 guinea pigs, and frogs and fish. The reaction that I get is usually "You have a zoo" but I wouldn't be happy any other way. The pros on the other hand are endless, I can't imagine my life without them anymore. When one happens to be away from us for more than a few hours, we just can't believe how much we miss them! There is nothing better than a yorkie, tail wagging, covering you with kissies! Sorry so long!:) |
thanks to all that i feel more courageous and even more excited about Roscoe. I will make sure to post my baby's pictures once available. |
i have the same thing now, i am wanting a yorkie so much, fortunatly my boyfriend cant wait to get one either, he thinks it wil be exciting and fun and loving and such an experience. but my parents dnt think i can do it. my dad will be mad, i think more because he doesnt like animals (i am a grown woman! lol) i said to my boyfriend, be prepared for poo and wee everywhere, and we have talked about it for about four months. honestly my mum has three dogs, ( collie, springer spaniel and a king charlse spaniel) and they are hard work but well worth it! dont give up on yoru dreams for someone else. just make sure they cant point fingers and say i told you so.... |
Have you ever thought about adoptng an older Yorkie from a rescue? This way you can try it out without all the "puppyhood". I'm home all day and it's a full time job but not impossible. Good Luck! |
