Have fun with your furbaby.
Yes it is a lot of work but it worth the trouble.
I just got a yorkie girl about 4 month ago.
I work full time with part time job on the side but I make time for my baby.
I wake up little early so I can have some time with her before I go to work.
I pack lunch and eat while I work so I can just go home during lunch time to play with her instead of eating my lunch.
I spend all evening just for her. (Luckily I never had much of social life to begin with.... no wonder I'm still single....)
Sunday is a day just for her.
I take her for walk or dog park.

I can't really quite my part-time job just yet since I could use the extra cash for my Momiji's expense.
But even with the part time job, I come home during lunch time to spend time with her.

As long as you can modify your life around the dog, you will be fine.
And you BF will love your dog, who can resist that pretty face!!!!

Good luck and if you get a yorkie, have fun!!!!!

I am a 25 year old and also have a live in bf who didn't want anything to do with getting a puppy. I work full-time. My puppy is now almost 6 months old, he is 100% potty trained and he doesn't bark and is a very good puppy. I think you can do it, my bf now loves him to death and everyone tells me that I did a good job (even though before they all told me the same stuff you have been hearing)

I think you can do it!!! The first month and a half was hell, but after you get through the initial getting him used to your house and crate training (ify ou are going to be doing that) then they are absolutely wonderful!!!

Good luck with your new puppy!!!

Hi there. Yes, Yorkies are a lot of work but they are the greatest little things in the world. And it sounds like you really want to have one, so I would not listen to what those people are telling you about not being able to care for one. Once you hold that little baby in your arms you are going to be so attached that you won't be able to put him down. I have two yorkies, my baby girl I just got a few months ago and I can't imagine my life without them. I am 23, I work full time and and finishing up my degree this quarter, so that means class full time as well. I am married and I have a social life. So it is possible to have it all. And belive me my babies are the most spoiled little things in the world. I take then everywhere with me. One thing that helped me when I first brought them home is I checked with my boss and asked if I could bring the baby to work with me. I set up a little place on my desk and put down a puppy pad and a bowl of water and food and there they were. They were still to young to bark and the mostly just slept all day. I had to be around my little girl all the time, because when I first brought her home she was only 12 ounces and I had to make sure her blood sugar didn't fall. The office fell in love with them, I brought them to work with me for almost 3 weeks and then I felt comfortable leaving them at home. They are a lot of work, but its so worth it, because they are the best little babies! Good Luck! :o)

Sometimes ( and I don't know your situation ) those that love you and the ones that may be trying to talk you out of this are the one that will have to help pick up the slack....,

My married son and daughter in law came to me before they got their second furbaby and ask me what I thought because I am the one that helps them with their babies when they need a dogsitter.... I thought that was very respectful of them....Maybe that is why they are not onboard.... if you will need anyones help , financially , or anything else, you should at least consider their thoughts and re assure them ....

I am about to have a nervous breakdown and I need all your great advise and suggestions. I have been dying to have a Yorkie ever since I was very little and now on April 4th I arranged to pick up my first Yorkie. Sounds cool right?

Everybody around me is trying to talk me out of getting my baby and making me so nervous by telling me that it is too much responsibility, too consuming, too much work, too much this and that.

Could you please give me your honest opinion if a 25 year old full time working female can handle a Yorkie? What would be the pros and cons? How much time and how much money would a Yorkie consume? For how long could they stay on their own? Would it be too hard to train? Would it be too needy?

I will need to make up my mind soon and inform my breeder but I really need to talk to people who understands me. People around me just dont get it!

Please help me out before I lose it!

I was single and working full-time when I got Archie. I arranged work so that I picked him up on a Thursday evening and took off work Friday through the next Tuesday so that I hade five days with him at the start to get him used to his new surroundings. When I went back to work, I had prepared a large X-Pen for him, in which he had, at one end, his piddle pads and at the other, a comfy rug, his food and water, toys, blankets -- very cozy. I left on a small TV in the room so that he would hear voices and made sure the room was warm enough (this was March in Chicago). He howled like a baby coyote when I left him each morning, but he only did that for about a week (be strong!). I was a nervous wreck for the first few days, but once I saw that he was still alive when I returned, I relaxed! I was not able to come home during the day to check on him, but he was fine (slept most of the time, I suspect). These pups ARE a ot of responsibility and the vet bills, if they have any puppy illnesses like hypoglycemia, can be high. BUT, your best defense is to get some books and read as much about Yorkies, and puppies in general, as you can so you can anticipate any problems. Follow your heart -- I did and have not regretted it.

Hi...I am 22 years old and have two yorkies and a new male Silky. If you want it to work then it will. I work full time and am not able to come home during the day but my furbabies sleep during the day and once I get home all the attention goes to them. I don't go out in the evenings b/c it is not fair to them to be alone again, not to say I don't go out with my friends on occasion, I just make sure there is someone to watch them.

Make sure you are up for the challenge, b/c yorkies are diffcult to train and will soon take over your life. But it is so worth it to see their face once you get home from work...

I think you can do it and once you show yourself that you can others will start to take notice and start encouraging you!! Let us know what you decide, we would all love to see your new boy...

Take it from me. Im a 28 year old guy. I work 50 hours a week.
I got rocky on march 3rd, and he is doing great when he is alone. It cost mere $6 a week to feed him and the joy of coming home is priceless.

have fun with your pup, and stop listening to others.

you'll be fine. I am a stay at home furbaby mom( i have no human kids). we have i have 1 male and 1 female yorkie, 1 male silky and two female cats. they adapt around your schedule. my husband works evenings and when i want to go out he babysits or they go to granma house:D . i have one needy yorkie(snitch) but hes learned that when i leave i DO come back. they are a huge responsibilty and you need to be financially ready for midnight runs to the er but the same thing applies to human babies and yet many people keep having them...so good luck and keep us posted!:animal-pa

I have to disagree with taking a couple weeks off of work to adjust the new puppy to your place - while it's nice to spend that time with them and get them adjusted and start TRAINING - it will only make it more difficult for your puppy when you do go back to work. Your puppy will have gotten used to you being around all day with her and then suddenly you're gone all day. Not a good idea. When I brought Oscar home for the first time, I made sure to get him on a weekend so I could spend a couple days with him getting used to his new surroundings, pee pads, etc. I brought Ruthie home just a few months later and I am so glad that I did - she and Oscar are great company for each other during the day while I'm out.

LOTS of people have dogs and work full time - how else do you afford to care for them? Some people use their lunch time to go home and spend some time with the dog, take it out etc. There are doggy daycares - if you're concerned about the puppy being home alone all day, you could try a daycare - even if it's just a couple days a week - this is also good for socializing the dog. I think it is important for people that do work full time to understand that after work is DOG TIME. You can't go to work all day, then go out after work for the night and expect to have a happy dog. My two seemed to have worked out a schedule around me - they sleep during the day while I'm at work and when I get home, they're ready to PLAY! And we do!

You just have to ask yourself how well you HONESTLY think a dog will fit into your lifestyle - not just meaning the fact that you work. What about your social life? Having a dog can put restrictions on how 'flexible' you are for making plans, traveling, etc. Do you have time for a dog? Walks? Have you thought about how you will train it? Potty training? Pee pads?

As far as the cost - it really depends on the health of your dog. In that respect, it's kindof just the 'luck of the draw'. We all purchase our puppies thinking/hoping that they will be healthy all their lives, but sadly that just isn't always the case. I've been VERY lucky with my two - only major vet costs have been their spay/neuter surgeries (the cost of which can vary from one vet to another). Standard vet visits are generally inexpensive - you'll probably find that you visit the vet more in the first few months of having your puppy (getting it up to date on shots, ect.) but after that, if the dog is healthy, all that is required are yearly boosters. I opted for pet insurance, but putting away a little money every month for 'emergencies' is a good idea too. Just being on this site and doing searches for problems has saved me lots of money in vet bills!

If you have the means (money & time) and still want to bring your puppy home despite all the negative feedback you're getting from friends/family - then go for it. If you have any doubts whatsoever - then maybe you should hold off for a bit and see if you still want a yorkie as badly in a year or so.

The bottom line is - a yorkie is a HUGE commitment - are you prepared for a potentially 15 year commitment, if not longer?

Good luck in whatever you decide!

Excellent post.

I would make sure that the puppy is healthy and his parents does not have a history of genetic illness and shunts because the most important thing is to be able to give them top medical care in case he is sick

I was thinking last night about your post...You said people tell you too much time consuming, too much work? Well I agree that is a definate commitment....Having a Yorkie IS a lot of work but in return you wouldnt believe the amount of love associated with owning a Yorkie..or in my case possibly a yorkie/mix...When I first got him (he was a stray) I thought..hmm..This dog sure is sweet but he sure does want a lot of attention...and ...he wants to be with me ALL the time...hmmm..I dont know about this..etc....Well in a couple of days it didnt matter anymore. I knew in those two days that this dog was definately going to require quite a bit more attention than I was used to giving but I also realized that I never knew a sweeter animal in my LIFE!!! He loves me so much and he is SO happy to see me should I come home from work or just taking out the garbage...He sleeps right beside me and I adore him just as much as he does me. I have LOTS of other interests in my life but have pretty much always been a homebody so whatever Im doing he can do it with me. I ride a motorcycle and I can tell you that I ride less now because of him but....thats just because I would rather spend time with him than be gone all day on a ride. Seriously..and I LOVE my bike!!!lol....But I love this dog like Ive never loved a dog before..he is perfect and I mean that...He really is perfect...
So I would say that if you are willing to commit to taking care and spending time with a Yorkie of your own then you will be well-rewarded by the love they give...and its worth every minute you spend..trust me..

Buddah<3r 03-14-2007 08:18 AM

Its more about if you think you can do it. It is a lot of work...but all things worth working for are.

I work full time about 60 hours per week, but I know I take care of buddah. I make sure to get up early to spend time with him and feed him ect. I try to go home on my lunch breaks and I spend a lot of nights at home.

I would caution if you go out at night a lot (places your puppy cant go...like a bar) dont do it. Otherwise its manageable. I take Buddah with me when I leave the house unless it's work or a place he isn't allowed. All my friends love him and it helps that he has some manners when we are in public.

I've found my little guy loves an adventure and is soooo happy when mommy takes him to join her.

House training isnt exciting and defiantly alot of work but I couldn't imagin my life without my little one now:-)
