Had a serious scare today!
 

I bought these all natural chicken breast jerky treats at Walmart the other day. I thought they would be good healthy treats as they had nothing added just 100% chicken breast with nothing added. They even smell like something I could eat if I had to. Well gave Teddy one in the car on the way home and he worked on it for about 10 minutes and then it was gone. Great he love it!

NOT...Later that night I gave hime a small piece I had cut off the larger piece as treat for going potty outside. He cried a little as it went down and I just attributed it to it having a sharp edge and him not chewing it fully before swallowing it.

Today was bath day and after his bath, blow dry I gave him a whole one to keep him busy while I cut his nails. Before I knew it he was hacking and screaming and hacking and screaming. I was so scared and thought he was going to choke to death. I didn't know what to do...I ended up getting a syringe and putting some warm water in it and skirting it in his mouth. He was swallowing it so I kept doing it and pretty soon he threw the large piece he had swallowed up. He was scared too and just wanted to put his head on me for a while.

Everything is fine now but oh boy what a scare! :eek: He will not ever have another of those and just wanted to let everyone else know that they should steer clear of those things!

I have seen them before and wondered about them cause they look sharp. I'm glad your little guy is ok! You may want to try something like a bully stick or texas toothpick.

That is scary! I am glad you posted this. I have a friend that gave my dog some chicken jerky, her dog loves it, so she wanted to give some to Chewy. She tore a piece off and gave it to him, my husband said he was watching and Chewy swallowed the piece whole, her dog would chew it up. My husband said we probably shouldn't give it to him, he was afraid he would end up choking on it.

Pebbles has choked on one too... i actually had to give pull the peice out of her throat. my big dogs love them...but i think its just to hard for the little one... cause they dont soften up when they chew on them really.

So scary!!!! I'm so glad to hear he's ok - this is a good reminder to all of us to play it safe b/c you never know!

u gave me goose bumps...:eek: thank goodness things ok now! and i dont do them treats like that no more to ! my kids get what mommy eats and they still do eat there little doggy food to ! good kids.. and they do have little hard chew bones for there teeth:) cause they eat what the family does to !

How scary:eek:! I guess he's a gulper. My two girls love those same treats, but they do gnaw them slowly, NOW. We had a similar scare with both of them trying to swallow them whole, when we first bought them. They learned not to do that:laugh:

What a scare, I am glad your boy is alright!!

I give mine those treats every night, they love them!! But the take their time chewing it and have never swallowed a big piece whole. Now with Destiny, I have to break the pieces up real small and watch her because she wants to gulp them down right away. But she is learning to take her time chewing it but I still won't give it to her unless I am watching her.

So the treats are safe, you just have to make sure your dog takes the time to chew it rather than try swallowing pieces whole. I have 8 dogs and they all do great with this treat, but this is because they all take their time chewing it.

Teddy loves his bully sticks so for chewing I guess we'll stick to those. As for treats...

We need some really special ones for outside potty time. Anyone care to share what thier puppies just love as thier treat?

I'm going to make some today that I know he loves. The only problem with them is that they are supposed to be stored in the fridge and I need them to stay by the door for potty treats. So I would love to hear what you all give that they just can't resist.

Oh, as for those jerky treats...my golden will finish them off I'm sure and so far she hasn't had any trouble with them.

I am sorry you had that scare. My grandmother gives her Pekingese dogs those chicken jerkey treats and has even given some to my Trini & Coco and thay love them but...I was warned by my vet not to give them to the Yorkies for the same reason you just went through and I have not since then. :p

Thanks so much for the heads up. We are all so thankful that your baby is okay. What a horrible scare. I was considering trying those for my kids, but will steer clear now. I am still tense all over from reading about your horrible ordeal. Give him an extra hug from all of us on YT.

Our furbabies love them too. Most of the time, I see them taking their sweet time chewing it so I am not really too worried. However, there are times that when I cut them up to small pieces (spending quality time with them, I guess), I would often wonder how they could chew it as it sure is very hard to chew, and I would imagine they could choke with it. I guess because my babies are over a year old now, they could probably sense if they'll choke on something they're chewing on, just like us people, we do not generally swallow on big or hard food without chewing it properly. One thing for sure though, I don't think I could afford to leave them unattended with those treats as we can never be careful enough. Accidents do happen, and if for odd reasons they miscalculate in chewing, at least if we're home while they have those, we can detect something is going wrong. Thanks for the warning.
