My house smells like dog PEE!!!HELP!!! We have two Yorkies and they do pee on the pee pads inside, but seems like for the past few months they are peeing more on the carpet than on the pads. We have tried all kinds of carpet cleaners and of course when we see the pee we blot up and spay oder killer and stainer remover stuff from the pet store on it. Don't think anything we use is really helping. When you first walk in the door you smell the pee. Please help! Any recommendations of getting the pee smell out of the carpet without getting new carpet would be appreciated. Thanks |
My guess is if the smell is that strong, that there may some some spots you haven't found and treated. Try using a black light at night with all the lights off and see if that's true. Then enzyme the heck out of any spot that shows up under the black light. Shampoo the carpet well, let it dry, shampoo it again - this time add some enzyme to the cleaner (see bottle instructions) and let it dry. You may have to shampoo several times to get all the pee out. When you shampoo and the wet carpet doesn't smell like pee, you're in good shape. I don't know that anything takes the smell completely away, but this does a pretty good job of it. Then you have to stay on top of the spots they pee in. If they aren't crated or restricted while you're gone, it's going to happen over and over. I highly recommend restricting them to one area that's not carpeted if you don't already.:) I have a handheld steamer-vac that I use as soon as I can on accidents. it was a good $30 investment on eBay. Plus I shampoo frequently. Hope this helps - I know it sounds like a lot of work and - yep, it is! :D |
I just put new carpet in 1 1/2 ago. But with 3 yorkies all the dog smells get trapped in the carpet and I feel like it stinks. They go outside to potty, and have very few accidents, but it stresses me out more to have carpet cause I don't want people to visit, and immediatly walk in and smell dog. So my resolution to this??? I'm taking the carpet out and replacing it with hardfloor of some kind. I told my hubby this is his new project. I'm not really sure what kind of cleaner will actually do the job the best. I agree that using a blacklight will help you find some spots you might have missed. I personally think that dogs and carpet just don't mix. |
In my opinion, there is no way to get pee smell out of carpets, no matter what you use. It soaks through to the pad and there is no way to clean the pad and get the cleaner and the smell out of the pad. My recommendation is to rip out the carpet and put in tile, laminate, or wood. If you do a search on this site, you will see that is what a lot of us have done. I have two little Yorkie boys, one NEVER goes in the house, the other one marks. Thankfully, we put down wood before we even got them and I can't imagine what would have happened if we had still had carpet!!! Well I know what would have happened, we would be ripping out carpet by now! :D I know it sounds radical and I know it is expensive but life with wood/tile/laminate/concrete (some of our floors are stained concrete) floors is just so easier than worrying about sprinkles on the floor. :) |

I had the same problem in the past. Unfortunately any carpet cleaner I used (including proffessional) only masked the smell temporilly. Once the pee gets into the pads I don't think there is really anything you can do other than replace the carpet.:( |
Were going to take our carpet up also. I clean the stains, but I can still smell it. I've tried everything. |

I agree with the hardwoods. We have hardwoods and tile only in our house. I rolled up all the orientals (because some are antique) for 6 months until I felt that the puppy was reliable. I still have no rugs in the kitchen, where he is confined, if I cannot watch him. He is almost 1 yr and reliable but I probably won't trust him alone for a long time to come. |
Well im lucky i have no carpet at all in my house i got wooden floorin all over it. I have caught Missy peeing on mats though, i think if u can get it mopped up quick enough this helps. |

I try to get to the stains right away. Simple Solution works well. But there is always going to be something of it there in the carpet. So, every 2-3 weeks, I clean my carpets with my Bissell Pro-Heat deep cleaning carpet cleaner. It is the best machine I have ever tried. Much better than those rentals! I use the Bissell Pet Odor shampoo with it. This thing will even get out those stains you missed that have set it. Just pretreat the stain, wait 5 minutes and then use the cleaner as usual. I just did my whole house last week and it still looks and smells wonderful right now. Eventually I will replace the carpet with hardwood, but it is still too new. After a carpet cleaning, it looks brand new -- so we will deal with this for a few years yet. I have to admit, Yorkies seem to be the most difficult to house train. I had thought our dachshund had been a tough case, but the Yorkies are taking longer than she did. I also just bought a Dyson Animal DC17 vacuum -- I absolutely love this. It is picking up so much stuff from the carpet, it has to be helping keep down odors as well. I think all that hair and gunk that sifts down in the carpet holds smells too. So, a really good vacuum helps. |
Dogs are why I only have carpet in the bedrooms now and the bedrooms are gated. We had our concrete cut and stained. Best investment we've made in this house yet! |
I think if the smell is that bad then pulling up the carpet would be the place to start. I also think I would start crate training them if house breaking other way isn't working. Maybe they need more potty breaks outside till they get the hang of it. |
Before you rip it up. Get a black light. Hit all the stains with Simple Solution ( I mean really saturate the areas so it gets down to the pad. I used a watering can to control where I needed it most). Then let it dry completely, this may take a couple of days. After it has dried, look at the areas with the black light again to make sure the stains have been taken care of. Now, steam clean with The Rug DOctor (rental) or your own machine with the Simple solution added to the water. Let this dry completely (Use fans to help with the drying). Smells and stains should be gone. To give it a fresher scent I go over the areas I treated with "Woolite Oxy Deep 2" ( comes in a silver double canister that you have to shake to activate the oxygen in the solution). I did this because I had a dog that marked and I was getting another puppy and I sware this puppy has not gone on the carpet where the old dog went yet and I always find him sniffing for something. I would try this before I went to the expense of new expensive flooring if you'd like delay doing it for a while. I thought I was going to get wood flooring until this worked very well and now I can use that money for something else. Sorry this was so long, but I thought I could help you.:) Good luck:aimeeyork |
I have the same problem, My yorkies won't pee in my room, so I keep them in there at night with the door shut...when I didn't, they seemed to pee in my sons room, it smelled like a toliet in there Gross! But I went and bought a shampooer and shampooed the carpets today with pet odor shampoo, and for now it has seemed to work. The shampooer cost $130 at Wal-mart, much cheeper than new carpet, wood, or tile. JMO but I'd try that first before I spent major bucks on new flooring. |

What brand did you buy? I have been looking at them and I don't want to buy on that won't last long or do a good job. Thanks in advance! |
We just ripped out our carpet and laid ceramic tile and hardwood. It is wonderful and easy to clean. And when I finish cleaning I know it is clean all the way thru to the flooring not just the carpet..... I love it. We also have three furbabies and two kitties and I want my home to smell fresh. Getting rid of the carpet did the trick. |
Try this I swear by this mixture: Three things: 1) Baking soda 2) Hydrogen peroxide 3) Liquid dish soap I can't remember exactly the portions, something like 2 teaspoons palmolive or other brand soap, cup of baking soda and half a bottle or whole bottle of peroxide. When you mix it all together-it works SO well. I used to use it all the time for an incontinent cat (and we all know how horrible cat pee smells) but I have also heard that it works on skunk smell too. Anything that kills cat pee or skunk odor has to work on dog pee. |

My SIL has 2 dauchaunds that peed everywhere in her house and it smelled terrible. She finally called a trainer to come ((there were other behavior issues as well)) and the trainer brought Icky Poo. They treated the carpet and bedding. Wow, was I shocked. There was no odor at all, and the dogs stopped using the carpet as a bathroom. They were much easier to housebreak after that. He said you can get it online but not in stores. Her house still smells as good a few weeks later. Kasey & Annie |

I had a problem with Oscar peeing on my bedroom carpet (same spot every time) and it was starting to smell - I tried products, but NOTHING seemed to work. Then I tried mixing a mild detergent with baking soda and water - it worked GREAT - not only did the carpet smell a million times better, Oscar STOPPED PEEING on the carpet! If the pee has soaked down to the underpadding, there's not much you can do other than tear up the carpets or maybe having them professionally cleaned would help. My solution worked for me, since tearing up carpet in my apartment is not an option. |

I would have a professional come and clean them. But unfortunately I don't think you will get the smell completely out. ONce it goes to the backing and padding of a carpet you can't get the smell out. In the long run it is probably easier to take the carpet out in the rooms that smell the worse and replace them. You probably should keep your dogs confined to an area with easy to clean floors like a kitchen or bathroom until they only go on the pads. I don't use pads myself only because several people recommended against it i.e. breeders, vets., trainers, and like long pet owners because for some dogs it can be confussing for them about which areas are okay and not okay to use as a bathroom area. I live in New Jersey but also spend time in colder areas during the winter. I have never really had housebreaking probs. myself because outside is the only option my dogs have ever had. I have relatives who live in Canada and Denver, Co. both areas have cold weather and they have little dogs, too. They put booties and coats on their dogs and they dogs go to the bathroom fast outside even when it is heavily snowing. Good luck with your babies. |
