New puppy: How should I do this?? So I'm picking up Rocco on tuesday, and I have to be at work on wednesday, so should I leave him alone with Coco? Or should I keep them seperated? I have a webcam where I can watch them but I can't do anything if something happens. I know Coco would never be aggressive to him, she's totally sweet and submissive. He's potty pad trained, so I think he would use those. I would just leave extras. Coco doesnt have run of the house, just the dining and kitchen rooms. So do you think it will be ok to leave them together? Another question, I don't want Coco eating his puppy food, so can I just leave her adult food out then put his food down once I get home, so she's not eating his food? |
I vote for separating them until you have more time to supervise them together. You need to be 100,000% sure that they are okay together before you leave them alone together, IMHO. If you separate them, their food won't be an issue, I'm guessing. I would think that the puppy would be more likely to suffer from low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) than Coco. If you're going to pick one of them to free-feed, it should be the puppy - again, IMHO. Have fun with the puppy! |
What time Tues? You could watch them the rest of the day and see how they do together. Of course, you know I'm the all-time softy and I would leave them together if they did ok the first day. Just think. They could start bonding. And the puppy would have someone to chew on, too!:D |

I would just start feeding them in separate places in the kitchen. Experiment Tuesday. Put Coco's where you always do and put the puppy's in a different corner. If you're not there, there won't be much you can do if they eat each other's food. It won't kill Coco if she eats the puppy's food anyway. Of course, the puppy needs food, but I'm betting he won't starve. |
Nobella, if I were you, I would get a larger wire crate and put a bed for Rocco on one side, a pee pad on the other side, and put his food, water, and some toys in there for him. He'll have everything he needs right there in his little crate, he'll be separated from Coco so you won't have to worry, and he'll feel safe and secure in his little crate. That is what I did with Hootie and she still LOVES her crate to this day. She gets in there to get away from Lamar sometimes. Even though Coco is really calm and submissive and you may think she would never hurt Rocco, she could just play a little too rough and you would have a disaster. I say it's better to be safe than sorry and just separate them at first. Then you won't have to worry about keeping Coco out of his food, too! |
Oh! I forgot to add....if you're worried about Rocco wanting to get out to be with Coco and Coco wanting to get into the crate to be with Rocco, don't worry about that. I was worried about that, too. Just put the crate in the room where Coco spends most of her time during the day and make sure that they can see each other. They'll be completely fine as long as they can see each other. Since Rocco will be in a new, strange place, he'll really value the comfort and security of a crate and he'll have Coco there to keep him company but you won't have to worry about them getting along. |

They are still all on puppy food (because Cali be 1 year old until May) and they have not gained an ounce. They're in excellent shape and health. So maybe you should take to Coco's vet and see what he/she has to say about it. But I dunno about keeping them apart. You know how Coco is. She's going to cry her little eyes out and she may even do some spite work (pee pee where she's not supposed to and chew on your carpet). That's what Codie and Tia did when I first brought Cali home and tried to keep them apart -- which barely lasted a few days. It was so much easier to keep them all together (even though potty training was an issue) because it helped them bond right away. Don't worry about anything Nobie. EVERYTHING will work out wonderfully. I'm so excited for you and Coco bear!! Once Rocco gets settled in, you have to bring him here to visit his Auntie!!! :D |
I have another idea ... why don't you send Coco to MEEEEEE so that you and Rob can devote all your time to getting Rocco settled? :D :D Codie and Tia sure do miss her!! And Cali hasn't got a chance to even meet her cousin Coco bear yet!! Send her my way! I promise to return her when you're ready (not!) :D |
congrats, I didn't know you were getting a 2nd girl!!! Lucky coco, I'd seperate too, at least for the first few |

I posted about Cocos new brother recently. I'm really excited! I just feel so bad separating them. I will be getting a crate from the breeder so maybe I'll use that. I will have to watch their interaction on tuesday to see what happens I guess. Coco is not usually rough or mean or anything, she's very gentle. She was afraid of Jen's little Tia at first (remember Jen?) but then immediately took to her and was playing gently with her using a toy. So I'm hoping she will be good. This puppy is over 3 lbs so he's not tiny tiny, he's already about 5months. |

Congrats, Nobella! I didn't know you were getting a pup! :D |
I wouldnt separate them if they seem to do okay together the 1st night. Coco is only about 5 lbs isnt she so theres not a big weight difference between them. Congrats again on your new puppy |
