Does anyone do thier own grooming? I am looking into learning to professionally groom my dogs. I think I would like to do it myself plus save money in the long run. I'm not looking to go into business just do it myself. I know someone (Sue) who sells a step by step video. Does anyone here groom thier dog or dogs? Chris |
I do - just started cause the groomers we've been to - FIVE of them all... managed to do a less than good job - so why spend 75 dollars to come home and think I could do a better job for free ? Besides my girls love me doing them I think and it's less stress cause I HATED leaving them and they did too. |
I do my own grooming for Sydney...mostly because I don't think that I could count on anyone else to be as gentle and patient with her as I am. But I don't think that I do it "proper". She never looks bad...but I clip her body REALLY short so that I can do it less often. It isn't her favorite thing. Question for Red98Vett...who I am sure is way more experienced with grooming than I am: what type of clippers do you use? I have dog grooming clippers and her hair just seems to be too soft for it. Is it b/c she still has her puppy fur? Or do I just have a crappy set? I've been using human clippers. |
I do it all - but I cut their hair short, so I don't know if I am any help. This is what I use for nail clipper: http://www.reneandersen.dk/galleri/negleklipper.jpg I use this: http://www.honnibonni.dk/itempics/thump/105.jpg after every bath and when we have been to the beach. For shampoo I use minkoil shampoo ans no1 conditioner :) |
I asked this same question or one along those lines. Everyone who answered said it was easy and to go for it. I haven't yet, I'm letting her hair grown out so I've made that my excuse. "I don't need to cut her yet I'm letting her hair grow out." I have cut the hair on her ears and have even ventured to try and pull a few of the hairs out of the inside. I have thought of taking her to a groomer once and really check out what they did just for reference but haven't. I guess I'm just going to have to go for it one day, heck her hair will grow out if I mess it up. |
You will do fine. I have been grooming mine for years and its always a task at first but i think much less stressfull on the puppy to have it done at home. the last groomer i tried cutt my 3 year old and that was my last visit to any groomer. |
I do mine, too. For all of the same reasons as everyone else...mainly we don't want anyone else to hurt our little furbabies. One of mine freak out when I take her to get her nails cut (I haven't mastered that, yet). I use clippers, first I used human ones which I already had, and when they wore out, I got some from Pet Edge, and they told me which ones they recommended. I keep their hair short, so it's pretty easy. I was afraid I would hurt them, but my daughter who went to beauty school explained that the only thing that the clippers would cut is whatever fits in thru the metal teeth. I was affaid that when I ran it over her stomach, it would get her little nipples, but that's not so. And when you run it over their privates, same thing. So, try it.. I love it....no hassles and our babies are happy because they trust us! :D |
im taking mine today but never again, I want to do it myself. THere is a good video, I cant think of it but I definitely need it! |
I took Oreo to the groomers once, and i watched and everything. ever since then i've been grooming my babies all the time, from baths, to haircuts, to nail trimmings... the only thing i quite haven't mastered yet is expressing the anal glands, once i do that, i'm all set! :p i don't want to be a groomer by profession, just love to do it on my own yorkies to save a buck or two.. or in this case 30! :) |

I groom my own. Last time I took them somewhere, I paid $60 (for 2 dogs) for a hack job. It's not hard to do. Tip the ears, trim around them, trim their hiney-bo, around their feet, in between their pads, cut their nails and pull hair from their inner ear. It probably takes me 30 minutes to do one dog. Plus, I enjoy it! ;) |
How do you guys get your dogs to stand still? Chewy just wriggles around evenn if I only cleaning his eyes. Do you do it in the sink or on a table? Any info is appreciated. |
