Should I cut my yorkie's hair? I live in Bakersfield California, and the summers are hot !! I would like to know from any yorkie owners who also live in a hot place if they reccomend that i cut my yorkies hair so that he wont be that hot ? |
Even here in UK where it never gets as hot as your region I clip Duncans hair for the summer - it makes him much more comfortable the only people I know who don't are seriously into shows. |
We're in Wales UK and it certainly doesn't get very hot here too often either ... probably if I lived in California I'd cut our yorkies's hair too but our groomer said that if I did this that the hair would never grow back as nicely and I had a groomer from the US agree with this so I keep our girls long. It does have its difficulties, Gypsy Rose goes into woods etc for walks and comes out looking like a tree - she has leaves and branches attached to ther LOL! Just thought I'd mention what the groomer said although I've seen cute pics of yorkies in the USA with "puppy cuts" or cut like a Schnauzer which is what I wanted to do before the groomer said this. Different when it's very hot though... you need to do what ever you think practical. Ana xx |
It really doensn't get as hot here as it does with you, but even in our cool (by comparison) summers, Lucy struggles with the heat. Her coat has been clipped very short and is great! Its so much easier to clean and brush so the maintinence is really easy. It keeps her much cooler in the summer and in the winter, we just put a little coat on her, though she doesn't seem to mind the cold even if we don't. I think if I was planning to show her it would be different and I would keep it long, but this way works for all of us and she looks like a cute teddy bear all of the time! ;) |
Hey, GypsyRose, guess who woke me up 30 minutes ago wanting to out??!!! |
And yeah, I guess I'll get Bo a puppy cut for the summer as much as I hate to. The lil dudes got hair to spare!! |
I cut my yorkies - all that grooming just isn't me - and they are never going to a show - that wouldn't be fair to the other yorkies! The judge would say: "We won't have any more yorkie contests so long as Kali lives, because she is the most beautiful and cute dog ever!" It's very practical and Kali and I have a cosy situation when I cut her - look at this: http://www.metteogthomas.dk/images/2005/klipning.jpg In the sink in the bathroom and she doesn't mind at all - she gets to look sporty and fresh :) |
Wow Kali is so good! Its a 3 person job with Lucy, Janet our groomer to cut (Lucy is such a wriggle bum we need someone who know what sheis doing!) One person at the head to chain feed tiny bits of treats and another to make us all cups of tea :D The monster is a lot better now, but the first couple of times it was all we could do to keep her in the sink! |
I am in Texas - we have had the blistering 85-90 degree days the past week. I am using what I think is called a Westie cut. I started clipping them myself when I was disappointed with the groomer skipping their bellies. I got a $7 electric clipper and it would not go through their hair, took it back and got the bohl for $20, and it is a breeze. The first three times, it was difficult until I figured out the cut I like. I leave their head and legs long and shave the body rater short. It makes them so soft (not like a boys burr) Brushing and cleanup are a breeze. We also have a pool and when they were wet with long hair, they would run into the yard and get horribly messy trying to dry off on the grass. They don't like the clippers or the brush, and the clippers are much quicker - need to be done less often. |
Kewtee, I am soooooo jealous of your dog! Clipping is a major chore in this house. My girls hate it, but it's necessary where I live. As I type, it's 105 degrees and it's ONLY May!!! I leave the hair on their heads and tails alone and buzz the rest of their bodies. They are so soft when I am done, I love it! Good clippers definitely make a difference if you are going to do it yourself. |
I too cut my yorkies hairs by myself. I think they look cuter like they did when they were pups and besides having to brush it everyday if the coats were long, it's easier to keep clean especially since they are pee pee pad trained. |
Jerry gets a haircut about twice a month and doesn't mind...his nails....well thats another story Michael |
MyCuteTeddybear I also live in Bakersfield Ca. So I know what you are talking about. It gets so hot here. I took my baby to the groomer today and they said he was so matted that they had to shave him. I wanted to keep his hair short anyways. Just not as short as they cut him today. :( I havent seen him yet because he is still at the groomers but i know he will still be cute. How old is your little guy? |
2 Attachment(s) i live in the san fernando valley and it does tend to get hot about 90+ degrees sometimes.. i had to cut gingers hair (not her face though or her top knot).. she was too hot, and i didn't want to put clothes on her on top of her hotness. |
Both our maltese and one of our yorkies are short!! I am in Arizona and it is VERY hot, ours like to swim as well so they are short! Id love to do it myself, mine just wouldnt let me :) |
