My yorkie is HUGE! Why is my yorkie so big? The breeder I drove 6 hours to get him from said the Dad was 6 lbs and the Mom was 8 lbs. My Jake is almost a year old and is 17 lbs!!! I have since contacted the breeder and the only other puppies from Jake's litter he is aware of are 7 & 9 lbs. Jake is CKC registered. I had a friend (who is also a vet) say that he didn't look pure yorkie to him. What's the deal? |
First of all, BIG yorkies do happen. Even with small siblings. So it could just be one of those things. Second, could be a mix. Can't momma's be pregant to more than one fella at the same time (will need a breeder to verify that), third, could be your breeders aren't being entirely truthful...who knows???? 17 lbs is not a tiny yorkie, but it's still a little dog. I hope you love your baby regardless (please don't take offense, none is intended) and please, join our teapot club! I am sure he is all yorkie. We have another one on here thats 18 lbs. I have one that is 10 lbs. You can get a bigger one when there is a bigger yorkie somewhere in the lines such as a grandparent. I am sure he is a total lovebug. |
I have a Morkie. (Yorkie & Maltese) The breeder said she wouldn't be over 5lbs. HA! She was 1.3 lbs at 14 weeks. Piper Is at least 10 lbs. I'm happy with her though. I don't have to do the Yorkie shuffel with her. She no longer fits in the carriers I bought, so I use them as diaper bags when visiting. She's my teapot at 11 months. You've got yourself a big one at 17 lbs, but that's still small compared to my sisters Rottweiler 60 lbs at 6 months. |
Welcome to YT. Don't be upset but if it makes you feel better your in good company on this site. There are several larger Yorkie's here. Buddy is one of them at 13.5lbs. There's no difference between the smaller and the larger. Only more to love. Of course if you were going to breed him you would then have a big problem. Carol & Buddy |
It goes without question that I love my big yorkie to death! However, I am worried that because of his obvious genetic (I don't want to say flaw and upset anyone) difference he is susceptible to other health issues. |

Larger yorkies arent more succeptable to any health problems. In fact they can be healthier and hardier than the smaller ones |
Did you get papers when you got him? I'm sure he is all yorkie. Some are really small, and some of them are really big. I wouldn't worry about it. |
Welcome. Actually, it is the opposite, small yorkies are more susceptible. I have a 5lb yorkie, which isn't all that small, that shakes if upset, so I have to keep Nutrical handy. My 7lbs yorkie never gets shaky at all. Both are healthy dogs though. I admit, when I got mine I was a little disappointed that I drove 6 hrs to get Chloe and she is larger than I wanted. However, I'd never let her go, she's a great dog. Lacey, at 5lbs is what the breeder said she would be. She also has a dainty, small, face, silky coat and very short legs, so I guess she is the most "typical looking" yorkie. I love them both, regardless of their size, which you will do also. |
The same type of thing happened to me. I was told by my breeder that Lily would only get to be 5lbs max, but she is 10lbs. She is all yorkie though and honestly, she is soo adorable, lovable and easygoing I wouldn't trade her for anything. She is a lot sturdier than Dexter (who is only 3.7lbs), so I don't worry about her as much. But, 10lbs is still pretty small for a dog generally speaking that is. |
I have CKC registration papers for Jake listing him as all yorkie. I had two labs for 13 years each and decided after they both passed away to get a small dog who wouldn't shed! I was tired of vacuuming several times a day to keep up on the hair problem. Although Jake is smaller than a Lab he still gets a little heavy sitting in your lap after a while. At least he doesn't shed. He does tend to be not so nice to my youngest daughter who is seven. He growls at her if she approaches him while he has a toy or if he just doesn't want to be bothered with her. My two older daughter's don't get the same reaction from him. I've tried having my youngest be the one who gets his food and water and lets him outside. But he still isn't too nice to her. |
lisa, my Molly was always jealous of the youngest niece in our family. Once, when my niece was two and visiting overnight, I held my niece and Molly jumped up and tore her slipper off, then jumped up again to try for the other! If they came over, she would make a mad dash for my lap. Another time our young nephew (age 6) stayed overnight, and Molly ran around burying all her toys behind pillows and doors to hide them from him. Funny! NOw when the kids became older, (12+), she was just fine with them. |
My teapot Hi. You're not alone! I have a 11lb yorkie. He was supposed to be 7lb tops, but he surpassed that! Oh well. These things happen. He is very sweet, and it's a bonus cause the bigger guys are so much more hardy! Just tough guys and you don't have to worry about them as much! |
big Yorkie I have 12.8 pound male Yorkie. He has short legs too! My female only weighs 7 pounds. Needless to say, I have started walking him on the treadmill. Can't wait for nice weather so I can take him outside on walks. Maybe he will shed a few pounds. |
I too have a bigger Yorkie. Before getting Banjo I was so uneducated about Yorkies and everytime I saw a bigger Yorkie I thought thats not a "real" Yorkie. How wrong I was. Banjos parents were 5lb and 7lb. so I am thinking he was going to be a nice size at 7lbs. Wanting to take him motorbiking with my husband and I. Well Banjo is now 5 and a half months and is 10.4lbs. Who knows how big he'll get when full grown. too big for the motorbike. BUT I adore him. He is a solid guy and so full of mischeif, so full of energy. You love them how they are. Just like a box of chocolates, everyones different but all delicious.:) :) |

I wish breeders wouldn't promise that a pup will be a certain size. I love all my yorkies, but was disappointed when my latest turned out to be over 10 lbs.after I was told she would only get to about 6 lbs. which I wanted as I planned on breeding her. When I sell puppies myself, I only will place them after I hear "I will love this puppy no matter what size it turns out to be" And I certainly won't guarantee a certain size, who can do that? I'm so glad to know I'm not alone in the TEAPOT yorkie category. I'm amazed at how many of you have yorkies over 10 lbs. It sure is helpful now that we have so much snow on the ground. He would probably be buried in it if he was any smaller. He does look adorable jumping around in all the snow drifts. |

Ahia is one of those 10 lbers that was supposed to be no more than 6 lbs. honestly , I don't see her as being big. I am not blaming anything on the breeder either. I too thought all 2 of the 4 pups that we had were going to be big and they are not. point is that you can't tell. and everyone who buys a pup will ask how big they will grow to be. In defense of some breeders they give their best guess. I am sure there are those out there that will lie to sell too. |

My 8 month old Yorkie female, Rory, weighs 5.4kg, 11.9lb. As she still has a lot of growing to do, she’s going to be huge!! Parents were 3 & 3.5kg. She is adorable, can jump really high, has big ears that flop over still & loves everybody, including kids. |

Welcome to YT My now passed girl was 17 Lbs of pure beauty, if there was enough running room she could have leaped over a 3 foot high fence. She with me for 17 years. A yorkie is a yorkie no matter how much they weigh. My adopted boy is 12 Lbs. Bigger yorkies are more sturdier, you don't have to worry about them jumping off sofas or bed as much as the wee lil ones. |
When you picked up your puppy from the Breeder, did you SEE the '6 pound parents'? |
