YT 2000 Club Member | Back From The Vet With Maggy May Well, we just got back from the vet with Maggy May, her temps is normal and the bloody diarrhaea hasn't come back since last night. Her stool tested negative for any parasites, which I'm glad for that, that's her fourth negative stool sample since she's been with us so that's relieving. The doc doesn't seem to think it's parvo at all because she's active, eating and drinking and has had absolutely no vomiting at all, so that REALLY makes me feel better. He's convinced it was the Yesterdays News cat litter that irritated her tummy and she's been passing it so he doesn't believe there's a blockage either. He wants me to keep an eye out for any vomiting or anymore diarrhaea or change in her behavior which could signify a blockage, but he said at this point, he doesn't believe she has one. He did put her on an antibiotic though to make sure there is no problems from the irritation to her stomach (Flagyl), she'll be on that for a week and is to have it once a day. I had him to check the top of her head while we were there, when she came to us, she had this weeee teeeny spot on her head where it looked like fur didn't grow as much yet, hardly noticable at all. As time has went on, it looked like a part line in her fur, but on looking at it closer, I seen the fur was actually thinning and didn't look right. So, they did a skin scrapping today and found a few Demodex Mites. They said they wanted to try her on Goodwinol oitment first for it because she's so small and all and to bring her back in/in two weeks to have it re-checked. I told them she's due to have her second set of shots on the 3rd, will they put those on hold now since she's got mites? They said it's very possible (my regular vet was out today so Maggy seen the other vet.) They said that normally pups with very low immune systems get this, some can fight it off, some cannot, but not to ever breed her (which I would NEVER do anyways) because it could be passed onto pups when they are born. I just want to cry. Maggy has fought so hard since she's came to live with us, she survived her brothers death and all the sickness her and Gibbs came here with and she's such a good girl. All I want is for her to be healthy and happy. Well, the happy part is achieved, but it seems like she just can't get to the state of healthiness she so deserves. I did some searching online to see exactly what the demodex mites were and educate myself on it and my heart just sunk so low at what I saw. I hope this medication works and clears things up, I don't want Maggy to have to suffer through what some dogs I seen online suffer through, some had to be put down because they just couldn't get rid of the mites. I just can't imagine Maggy not being here with us, we love her so much and she's part of our life. Has anyones furbabies ever had the demodex mites? if so, what has been your experience and did you use the Goodwinol ointment, did it work? Has your furbabies had any other break outs of the mites since then? I feel like for every step forward she takes, she gets knocked back two. I asked the vet how she could get them and she said that many pets have them and owners don't even know it, but the healthy dogs and older dogs can fight against it and it will clear up, it's the ones with very low immune systems that can't fight back. So, that's the update on Maggy May, I'm gonna go, I wanna read more while Maggy's sleeping. Thanks for all the prayers for her, I really appreciate it.

| Wow thats great news. When i first heard the bloody stools I immediately thought Parvo. My springer got parvo from a stray cat fecuses in our old yard and she was active as normal then bam 360 change and I immediately took her to the vet.. 5 days later and a 2500 dollar vet bill we were lucky she survived cause the vet said she was in stage 3 of the virus and its attacks (whatever that is i thought there was a begining stage and a ending stage) so.. I'm glad to hear she doesnt have parvo... |

This is the link where I had read about a dog that had to be put down because of Demodex. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, you'll see the one I'm talking about, it's a dobby, I see it and just started bawling. http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/dem.html I hope this med they have Maggy May on clears it up and she doesn't have anymore problems with it ever, ever again.

| Oh that is sad but also looks like a hideous bad case of them. Dont worry about that happening with Maggie your Vet has caught it early and will be able to treat it. If the meds he has her on dont work he may have to do dips or I heard there is also an oral medication for it. Chachi hadd it bad his hair all on his back was gone and he had open wounds and they treated his.
