I have a GIANT YORKIE! Is it normal for a Yorshire Terrier to be over 8 lbs? My Yorkie is only 7 months and I think he's like 9 pounds now. Is that normal? |
Yes it is normal hes just gonna be a larger yorkie. My male is 10 lbs |
Yes, it's normal :) Many of us have yorkies larger than what AKC standard calls for, but that doesn't mean they're not yorkies. My yorkie is about 10-11 lbs. and he's not overweight at all. He's just a little longer and taller, hence the higher weight. :) As long as your yorkie isn't overweight, then don't worry about it. |
Your not alone Cozy was 7.5 pounds at 4 months. She is currently 10.5-11 pounds, depends on the day and is 10 months old. She has not gained really any weight since she was 6 months old and went into heat. Giant yorkies are the best. She can fly onto the bed, sofa, and into the car without any problems. If she was smaller I do not think she would be able to. Also I have a +100 pound golden retriever (very gentle and submissive) and two maine coon cats (13 and 14 pounds each). So a tiny yorkie that being a yorkie to standard would not fit into my house hold well. She adores the two cats and plays chase and wrestles with them all day long. She will retrieve for hours with the golden. |
OMG - I'm so glad I happened on this thread! I've been so worried that something was wrong with me that my dog is 10 lbs and only a year old. He's 17" long and is not fat - just not the "teacup" that I paid for. No matter, I love him as he is and I'm so relieved that there are other nice, healthy "bigger" babies like mine! |
lol, i call mine the jolly green giant of yorkies. he is long & lean 12-14lb yorkie. |
I have another question. Riley's ears don't stand up and never have. Anybody else out there have the same thing? Aren't their ears supposed to stand up? |
I have a GIANT YORKIE! I am actually glad that he's big! I had a teacup chihuahua and I love him to pieces but he is very needy. I have to carry him everywhere! My yorkie has a very special way of going down the stairs. He goes down about a quarter wasy down and then he would go in between the bars and jump to the couch and then to the floor. He literally flies.. its sooo cute! He loves to jump! Okay, Im glad that its normal coz I have been asked a MILLION times on what kind of a dog I have or is that a Yorkie? He's so big... but I love him regardless! He was a Christmas gift and my bf chose him coz he has the cutest face! :aimeeyork |
Cozy's ears don't stand up either. So she is a Giant with ears that don't stand up. I wouldn't change her for the world. |
More for you to love:p. Tinkerbell has a very thin coat:confused: |
I'm so glad to hear from you all. I also get tired of hearing, "my, he's awfully BIG for a Yorkie, isn't he??" I wouldn't change one little thing about my giant baby with the floppy ears! |
Dayzee's ears don't stand up either. So she is a my teapot yorkies with ears that don't stand up. I wouldn't change her for the world. |

Buddy was 7lbs at 7mos and gained 1lb a month until he was 1yr. Today at 3yrs he is 13lbs. 5oz. Just bigger that's all. Hope you weren't planning on breeding him. The bigger one's are very sturdy and just as loving. I bet he's a cutie. Carol & Buddy |

I am sure your baby is adorable (would love to see pics by the way!:) ) Pay no attention to the people that say comments like that if it is meant in a mean way... if its not one thing it is another with some people, if they have nothing nice to say they should not say anything at all.. Welcome to YT by the way!! |
just look to the left and see lexi, she is 9 lbs of solid muscle.. |

My boy Banjo is only 5 months and already 10.4lbs. Hes as solid as a rock and full of beans. Hes a fast runner, and leaps up and down the stairs, flys off the sofa, jumps no problem on the bed. Just now have to train him to jump into the car ha ha. At first I was concerned about him being big. I was stuck witht he fact that he cannot be a "real" yorkie if hes over 7lbs. I am so glad now hes bigger, and that I have found out there are a lot more bigger yorkies out there.;) |
Mine is giant toooooooooooo Boy am I glad I ran into this thread. My cody is 15# He is 3 years old and his ears don't stand up either. He is crazy funny! I love him to death. I want another yorkie but I am a bit worried about how a "smaller" yorkie would do with a big one. Is there a special forum on this site for folks like us who have GIANTS?? |

Toto weighs 10 pounds. His ears don't stand up either. I think he is kind of lazy because he can hold his ears up when he wants to. |
