Please Help, Emergency tonight i noticed roxie, trying to poop, but she couldnt, it was very hard, and she was straining really bad, so i lifted her tail and noticed what looked like poop stuck in her, so i tried to pull it out to help her, and she went a lil bit, and then she needed a bath, so while i was giving her a bath, i noticed a red bulge coming out, looking almost like her rectum. i called the vet right away, and he thinks its a tape worm, but im not really so sure, i looked at a picture of a dog who had one hanging out, and it wasnt near as severe, im so worried, the vet said its nothing that she needs to be taking to a emergency visit, but she has to come in and get a injection to kill it. please help, he also advised me to give her something to help settle her stomach, but shes in so much discomfort, shes walking around, and acting very weird, now shes just laying down, she has been shaking, and i dont know what to do?!?! |
I would follow the vets instructions and love your baby lots tonight. Cuddle and relax with her...if you relax maybe she will too. I she is alright and that tomorrow she will start to feel better. Let us know what happens.... :( |
If Roxie is in that much pain I would insist on taking her in immediately !!!! |
I have never seen or heard of a red tape worm. Its hard to say not seeing it but I would take her in and get it checked. She could have pushed to hard. |
You might try giving her a little bit of can Pumpkin to see if he is constaped. sorry about spelling. (may want to call vet back and ask first.) but think i would insist on them seeing him. |
shes not moving at all, and its just bulging out of her rear, its red, and looks like it has veins in it, i think its her rectum where she pushed too hard, or maybe its a kind of tapeworm, ive read some, and looked at a picutre of something that looks like it sorta http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/tapewormsegs.jpg |
I don't know much about worms, but if you do a search and type in "tape worms" about 5 or so threads will come up and there is alot of good information about various types of worms. I hope this helps. |
Do you have a 24 hour emergency pet hospital you can take her too ? I would if you can - Are you sure it isn't part of her rectum ? she could be very constipated and it's pushing against her - either way it's got to hurt....I really hope it nothing serious but for peace of mind - I would go right in and have someone look at her...good luck ! |
pup That is common for pups to do...trim the hair so the stool comes out and make sure it does...put some diaper creme on it and even the worst red butt. it will be fine in a day or so..it can look awful. If she get fleas, she will get tapeworms..watch for them..can't see them in a stool check at vets. |
our vet wont see her, he said its not typically something that needs to be taken care of after hours, and that its a tape worm, thats not ready to break off in her stool and pass, but that she needs to be taken in to be treated for it tomorrow, and to give her something sweet so she can get some energy, bc shes lifeless, and the emergency vet says if our vet says its not something thats a dire emergency that it was up to us |
worms Dog tapes worms are small and not one long worm, but many. Sounds liek her rectum is inflamed from the stool being stuck. What so you mean by lifeless..like unconscience or listless..give her some honey or nutra cal. or sugar water.. |
Ok now that picture is a new one for me. Glad I haven't seen those tapeworms before. |
I do routine poopy butt checks. It doesn't take much hair to get a closely stuck "ornament" that blocks them from being able to go next time. |
photo As a retired groomer..that is the end of the Yorkie I got to look at daily LOL..and many had tapes..eek!! Looks just like the photo... |
It sounds like you're very worried. If it was me, (and I DO have a tendency to over-react sometimes but I can't help it)I'd take your baby to the emergency vet. Even though they charge a million dollars, it'd be worth it for the peace of mind for you & the possible relief of your baby. Good luck whatever you decide. Please keep us posted. |
i gave her some nutra stat, and she ate as if she were hungry, but she had a full belly before i fed her, shes been in the same spot for 30 minutes, and not moved, the vet says it should break off in her stool, when she goes, but needs to be treated for them tomorrow, so i have to drop her off in the morning and go on to work. I've never seen not 1 flea on her, so i dont know how she got it, she is in puppy classes at petsmart, maybe something from there. shes just not her normal self, and it just seems as if this thing is blocking her from releasing any stool |

I would then definately be taking her in. I didn't think she was in that much pain. Gosh, the poor thing. :( i would insiste on her being seen.... |
Check your PM's. I am concerned about that baby..I have only seen one Maltese puppy that looked like your discription and it was serious. I did say get some OraJel max. strength to gently put on the hiney. Has a numbing agent and is safe!! Stop laughing, y'all!!! I use it ALL the time on my babies.. |
she just got up and started to try to use the bathroom, and a tiny tiny bit came out, but shes having a hard time passing stools, the vet said it should come out with her stools and break off, but shes not producing much |
help Our aussie did that one time and we had him to one vet and he said he was constipated and had to pull alot of it out but then 2 days later he was in the same shape he strained and strained and strained so hard we were really worried.so we went to another vet and they had to do surgery on him he had a growth and was blocking him , They did surgery and neutered him and he never did it again |
|
I would take her. My vet said that mine was not a emergency situation but I felt it was he was getting dehydrated really really fast he had runny poop and coem to find out he had two types of parasites. The vet bill was expensive but it was worth it. |
Wondering if she needs a new vet. That worries me. I feel like i am a groomer as many butts as i have to clip around here. :D |
It could be a hemoroid(sp) of sorts. I have seen many tiny pups come into the vet where their rectums have started to fall out. IT is possible to have it pshed back in , but sometimes it requires a few stitches to hold it in. It canbe caused from straining or from being cleaned to vigorously by mom. If she is in pain and not herself than for her sake you should take her in. Sorry to hear she is sick. |
I don't have any advice to add...just wanted to say I'm thinking of you and praying your baby is better soon!!! |
im gettin ready to leave and dropping roxie off at the vet, i hope everything turns out okay, and its not something serious. She did really good last night, she slept all night, and this morning she runs up against anything with an edge. She also not producing any stools, so im really worried about that, because shes got such a full belly. anyways, wish me luck. ill have an update when i get home around 6pm tonight. |
Ashley - I think your vet was too nochalant - but I'm glad she's being seen ...Good luck today and I hope it's something easily treatable... |
Ashley, please keep up posted I will pray for your baby!! |
I hope everything turns out all right! Good luck! |
Bennett had that. It turned out to be a prolapse. It's where part of the rectum starts pushing out because of the pup straining. Take him to the vet to be sure and take him NOW!! Adding pumpkin to his meal will him keep him regular and the stool much softer. Just a tablespoon should do it. Good luck!! Wendy |
