is it safe for yorkies to sleep under the covers? Our yorkie is 18 wks old. She seems to like to "burrow" under the blankets on our bed at night. It's kind of cute to see her go under all those covers but I don't think she would get enough oxygen. Any thoughts on this? Can she stay there or not? Did your yorkies survive such a thing (and without brain damage from lack of fresh air)? (Edit: She is about 5 lbs. now.) Thanks y'all.:animal36 :) |
I don't know and I wonder the same thing. Abbie likes to sleep under the covers and because of the cold weather we have alot of covers on our bed. I don't let her sleep with us all night for that very reason. She gets to cuddle before bed and when I let her outside around 6:30 I put her in bed to warm up for about 45 minutes. I've talked to my mom about this and she said her chi has slept under the covers down by their feet for many years. It worries me to much. Reesie sleeps with us, but she is grown and lays on top of the covers. |

lexi doest the same thing and im not gonna worry about it now..ive had no problem with her so far.. i think she would know if there wasnt enough air and she would come to the top.. when she does cuddle i make sure there is enough air at the opening for her.. at least there is some air going in. |
Thanks, very comforting. It's funny to hear of other pups wanting to sleep under the covers, not just mine. I do know I couldn't sleep with my nose under the blankets, they're pretty heavy. I get so cold that I burrow too, everything except for my nose. Love my ears covered!:D |
Rocky loves to sleep under the covers when he's cold. I have a separeate blanket for him right next to me and usually wrap his body up in that when he goes to sleep. If I don't, he tries to lay underneith me, and I don't want to squish him. I put the comforter over him, but very loosely so he has room to breath, and when he gets hot he usually goes on top of the covers. As long as her face isn't snuggled in the covers she should be fine |
All of mine love to snuggle under the covers. When it is warm they will sleep on top. My hubby moves a lot in bed and I worry about him squishing a pup but nothing has ever happened. They are usually surrounding me in the morning. |
My kodi does this every night he is now 5 years old and loves to do it :) Daisy will to if she is cold i don't see a problem at all:) |
Jaden loves to burrow underneath the covers, I sleep in a big Queen sized bed at home and have a feather blanket on top and sometimes I will wake up and I can't find him because he has burrowed so far down into the covers. When I do find him, he's sleeping on his back underneath the covers and will look at me like what? I'm comfy here!:p |
I think its fine. Izzy sleeps under the covers all the time. When I brought him home the first time, he would bury his face in the pillows on the couch and fall asleep. (see pic) I wondered about it myself but he seems to come up from under them during the night and he is fine. He will snuggle up right next to me under the covers...its so cute!:luvu: |
Oops! 1 Attachment(s) I forgot to add the picture...here it is!:p |

Rocky does it tooo My Rocky does it to and i am also worried about him not being able to breathe but like some of you said im sure if he needs air he'll come out from under to get some. When he does sleep with us i try and put him on top of the comforter so i know he's breathing ok lol |
Zoe does the same although it is a thick heavy down comforter |
My Harvey Also Likes To Sleep Covered Up. When He Sleeps On Your Knee We Often Throw A Fleecy Blanket Over Him And He Loves To Snuggle. Sometimes He Pokes His Head Out And I Wrap Him Up Like A Baby And He Snooooooozes For Hours - Never Mind If I Am Comfy Or Not!!!!!!!!!!! If He Get Too Hot He Comes Out, So I Think You Should Be Ok. |
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but a dog has died on here because of sleeping under the covers. To me it doesnt seem worth taking the chance. Here is the RIP thread http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34893 |
Cali and Tia LOVE to sleep under the covers, head and all. Tia always goes under the covers and crawls all the way to my legs and sleeps with her head on my legs every night. Cali sleeps right on my chest but she MUST be under the covers at all times ... if I try to move the covers, she sure as heck let's me know she's pissed! :p Codie prefers to sleep on top of the covers (unless it's super cold) and directly against my side. I usually hug him in my sleep. I LOVE sleeping with my 3 angels and I wouldn't have it any other way. :D |
sleeping yorkies both of mine sleep under the covers.... always have... they even let my husband sleep with us! Lucky me!:p Roxanne |

I read that thread about the dog who died under the covers. So heartbreaking. It's made me leery of Jazz being under so many blankets, even though he heads down there and wants to sleep there. I just wait a few moments until he's asleep and move him up so that his face is only covered by one open-weave blanket. This has the advantage that I also get to cuddle with the head end of him rather that the tail end! |
Believe me, they would be fighting to get out if they were smothering. ;) Mine never liked to go under the cover till the last couple of weeks since we have had a really cold spell, then around 4 am they dig the cover trying to get under, but after they are warm, they come back out. |
Thanks for all of your thoughts and comments. I really appreciate them. As for "Trace," the 13-mo-old puppy who died under the blankets, I wonder how much he weighed or how much that might have to do with it.... On our bed we have lots of separate covers, not just a thick comforter or two. I myself get entangled in them sometimes and that's aggravating to me. For a little pup to want/need air and not be able to find its way out or to get entangled, well I don't like that idea. I'm going to try wrapping Jewels up in a blanket that fits her and see if she's happy with that. Oh, the ongoing questions that come with being a first-time yorkie mom! I'd be lost if I couldn't find such great answers from you all who have more experience.:animal36 |
Boo sleeps under the covers every night all night. He hasnt complained yet. LOL |
This is funny as hubby and I were just discussing this very thing a couple days ago. I had a friend who even last year was always telling me about her dog and how she liked to sleep under the covers. I was like, Dude! That's not safe! She'll suffocate! You'll kick her! How do you KNOW she wants under the covers? That's just so stupid! ROFL Well by golly... I got my little yorkie... she burrows under the covers, and if you take her OUT, she goes right back under. She sleeps either by or on my tummy (however it happens to be).... so I have a little more sympathy for my friend now. Some dogs just really do like to sleep under the covers. And it won't kill them... at least it hasn't yet :p |

Sorry, I'd started typing my reply and left for a bit... came back and submitted it. I just read that thread... oh my :( Poor baby.... |
yup yup yup......Brandi is a "burrower" I wouldn\'t know how to stop her from going under the covers.....she\'s up and down and under and over the covers all night.....she has the doggie steps and she basically comes and goes as she pleases...... |
chester has slept with me since he was 8 wks old, he is now almost 4.5yrs old and he loves to go under the covers, he is 8.5 lbs. He paws atthe covers and that means he wants to go under. little heaters they are..... |
I haven\'t let Eddie under the covers since Trace died. Not worth the risk to me. |
ive had yorkies for over 20 years and they have all slept under the covers and ive had no problems but i would say if they are very tiny and very young not to do it just incase you roll on them and they are not big enough to move you or wake you up, i would guess that is what happened to the poor little one that died. its kind of the same with sleeping with babies and toddlers , a baby might not wake you if it was in trouble but a toddler probley would, im use to sleeping with my yorkies so wake as soon as i feel movement and im a light sleeper and not very heavy and dont move much in bed. |
