Royce showed lack of appetite since last week I took him to the vet he did blood work and he called me back today because his liver enzyme is slightly high and he wants to do a bile acid test ...I know that means liver shunt if the acid test is positive ....is liver shunt fatal ? I know if it's external it ca be operated on but in case it's internal does it mean that my Royce will die ....i have been crying since I received the vet's call please did anyone go through this ? What does it mean ?

Some liver shunts can be treated with diet. A "slightly' high liver enzyme does not necessarily mean liver shunt. the reading has to be greater than 100 on a bile acid test for true liver shunt. Sometimes a dog will have a 'slightly" high test because of the food it eats. certain kinds of puppy food is really high in protein. I'm not sure just how much protein per day they should get but i recently found out that one I use at times is extrememly high compared to others. so before you panic, check your food bag and see how high the protein content is. If it is too high, then change food and have him retested in a month or so. Above all, don't panic. several members on here have had liver shunt and been able to treat it. And before you change food or anything, see what his bile acid test shows and what your vet thinks.

Cali has an internal liver shunt and is doing ok. It depens on the type and severity. Most can do well with surgery or medicine and diet. Good luck!! I will pray for him.

Don't get upset over this. Calm down and wait till the bile acid test is done. It probably just means a change in diet. Take it one day at a time. ;)

Oh, I am so sorry to hear of your baby's troubles! I can sympathize a bit as we will probably have to have her tested for liver shunt as well. I've discussed it with our vet.

I will say a prayer for your Royce and for you for a manageable solution.

Bobo just had surgery for an external liver shunt 18 dats ago. He has improved so much since having his food changed to Science Diet LD(a special food for dogs with liver problems) and he is also on 2 meds.Go ahead with the bile acid test, we were lucky enough they were able to find his shunt with an ultrasound with doppler. Yes there is hope after LS diagnosis. PM me if you want to.

Oh Myriam I am so sorry to hear that you are going thru this girl, I know how much you love your Royce. Girl get the tests done first asap and take it from there as to the degree of it. Think Positive and Pray alot. You know I am here for you if there is anything you need at all. :aimeeyork

Dont panic, yet! I did when Tooties enzymes were high, but he had all the tests and he is fine. No special diet as of now. I just have to have him tested every 3 months but he shows no signs of any problems...

An internal shunt is not a death sentance. It can be controlled by diet and I know several dogs that are doing very well on the proper diet. I strongly suggest you join this yahoo group http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/L...d_MVD_Support/
There are alot of very knowledgable people on that group and several of them are dealing with what you may be possibly dealing with (I pray not)
None of my dogs have LS and Im a member of that group, just to learn all I can about this disease and hopefully help others who are dealing with it. Its a very welcoming group.

please keep me posted on what you find out..i am going through the same thing right now..my baby's bile acid came back elevated but not over 100 so we know something is wrong but not sure what. hope everything turns out ok for you!

I took Royce 2 weeks ago to the vet campus in Montreal, they run a whole bunch of tests and did an ultrasound as well :
As per the ultrasound Royce doesnt have an external or internal shunt however they didnt rule out Microvascular Dysplasia ( MVD ), he alsohas a bladder stone
As per Urinalysis and blood test results : Royce has a minor renal insufficiency and MVD is not ruled out yet as his liver enzymes are slightly high.

At the vet school they recommended that Royce has surgery to remove the baldder stone and to do the kidney and liver biopsies ....
My vet who is terrific suggested that we wait and redo the tests in 2 weeks to see if there is any change in the values ...if they went back to normall no need to worry, if the values still the same wait another month and redo the blood tests ...if the values ( Bun, creatinine and alt for liver enzymes ) are higher then he will proceed with the biopsies ...

Sounds like pretty good news. Surgeons fix things by surgery. If Royce is doing well I'd hold off, too. Your vets caution shows good medicine.

Your email looks just like mine the other day. I could not stop crying. How is your baby? I go for a Nuclear Scan tomorrow and if my Yorkie, Little Boy Mickey, has to have some liver problem, I heard that Microvascular Dysplasia was the least problematic. It can be controlled by diet or you can do nothing if the dog shows no signs. I hope all is well. Prayers to you and your baby.

so sorry to hear about yur baby I am surprised to hear that the high count CAN be ok-I thought it was always deadly---pooor little guys.. I feel so bad for them to have to go through this stuff. seems like yorkies have a LOT of problems :(
