Sores & Scabs on Mia! Hey guys I just got back today from vacation and picked up my babies from my mom. I noticed Mia my little 3 pound girl yorkie has a bunch of scabs and pink or red sores on her head neck and chest. I know for sure she did not have these before I left. There are two that are huge and crusted over like a huge scab. The others just look like sore red or pinkish sores. I put some Neosporin on them today and I could tell they did hurt her since she squirmed a bunch. I am just wondering if I should try to heal them myself or take her to get checked out at the vet tomorrow. My mom said she kept a really good eye on her and the only thing she could think of was her and Murphy were wrestling a bunch. I doubt my other yorkie could have caused all of them so I think she must have a reaction to something. Any suggestions? |
i would bring her in.... layla has one of those on her head... i brought her in.. just a scrape... apparently... but if she has more than one i'd bring her in as soon as you can.. you woudn't want murphy to get it too. |

can you post a picture of them please? |
A picture would help... Do they look like ticks under the skin? Ticks scare me so much!!! :( I would take her in, anyway... |
She sounds like she has some kind of bug bites - is she itching ? poor baby :( |
2 Attachment(s) Okay I just sprayed some vet medicated itch and hot spot treatment on it from Pets Mart. I am not sure if it will help but it is worth a try. Here are some pictures of the two BIG sores for those who have asked. Thank you guys so much. I just want to make sure Mia is okay - I have no idea what this could have come from. |
1 Attachment(s) the one on the right looks a lot like the one layla has.. i'll post a picture of hers... it scabbed... then the hair fell out.. she has a bit bald spot :( it is red/orange from the idoine i put on... to keep infection away! the only thing that makes me worried about your is that there are many... not sure... perhaps mange?? is she under 1 year??? |
I've read where dogs can catch ring worms, do you think that's what it looks like? Please let us know once you find out so we can be careful with our babies. I like this site, because everyone is so helpful educating each other. Hope everyone's baby will be better soon and nothing serious. |
   OMG, that is way too graphic :D Poor babies. I guess it is best that you seek a vet's attention just to be on the safe side. There is no way one can get that from rough playing :) Annika and Tiger sends slurrpy kisses to Mia and hope she gets well soon! |
I just saw the pics. That is what Bentley's looked like exactly, except his was less red. |
my vet says that ringworm would be the last thing it is... very very rare... but that is what i thought layla's was... he said it wasn't because it didn't have a red ring around the outside of the circle where it would be spreading... |
You need to have it checked out. It could be from having mange |
Okay - thanks guys I am taking her in to the Vet on Saturday just to be safe. I do not think it is ring worm becasue of all the sores but mange could be a possibility I guess. She just turned one on January the 8th. I am not sure what Mange is - guess I need to look that up. thanks again! |
Its a parasite. They do a skin scrape to check for it. It is also called mites |

Okay I know this sounds stupid but is peroxide the one that comes in the white bottle and will it burn her? Sorry I am not a mommy so I am not an expert on all this medical stuff - althought I should know this I am sure. |
peroxide is in a brown bottle...and no it doesnt burn |
It may be dog lice. They are white and you can see the adults in a bad infestation. The larvae burrow into the skin and you should be able to see them and feel them. They do make sores that look almost like hot spots. They tend to burrow on the head area and between the eyes. Vet should be able to determine what it is. |
How long have they been there? Maybe when she went to potty there were branches on the ground that scraped her. Edit - I took Rosie for a spot on her back that was there since before Christmas. The vet ruled out mange because it was only in one spot. If it was mange then it would be in several spots all over the body. If it doesn't heal in a few days then I would take her in. |
Poor baby, hope this problem gets fixed fast :( |
Mange is usually not bloody at first or in small spots, Usually it starts out as just hair thinning then total hair loss that creeps . I have never seen mange in small bloody spots. She looks like she could have had an allergic reaction to something. Does she scratch at it alot? Is it itchy. Mange is SUPER itchy, every time you look at the dog they seem to be scratching. It typically starts either at the lower legs ususally jsut a thinning of the hair at first, as well as around the eyes, ears. Bonnie |
i don\'t think its mange either. They look they scrapes or puncture wounds. mange doesn\'t look like that inthe begining stages. Just keep the area clean. Wash the spots with soap and warm water. if teh scabs are really crusty try and get some of them off with the warm water soak. after you clean the area thoroughly pat it dry. Next put the peroxide on a cotton ball and let it soak into the wound. Let it dry. Once its dry you can put neosporin on it. Keep hair out of it if it looks like its irritating teh wound more. you maybe have to clip the area, but you shouldn\'t have to since yorkie hair is so thin. keep us posted |
OKay I am treating them with the peroxide and neosporin like you all said. She really does not like the peroxide and does not like me touching it at all. She is not itching it at all unless of course i start messing with it. So maybe it is not mange after all. I am still going to get the Vets opionion but he can not see me till tomorrow morning at 8:00am. Hopefully I will know more than. Thanks all for helping me. |
My little shih tzu has seborrhea and it looks exactly like the scabby picture. Is the scab on the oily side? If you take it off it will look like the other spots. Cassie has to have special shampoo for the condition and if she has a breakout it does itch. The main places she gets them are on the top of her head and around her neck. Let us know what the doctor says. Good Luck |
Has you noticed her messing with the spots? Chance has a spot and I took him because I thought it was ring worm. It was on his thigh area. The vet said that is the exact place where she gave him his rabies shot. So he still has no hair in this area but it is not red and inflamed. |
What was it? |
I hope it isn\'t ringworm. I had a mobil groomer come to my house ONCE. Three days after he left, I noticed one of my dogs having the same kind of scab. I thought they had been playing and someone got a little rough. Didn\'t think much of it, but did use peroxide and neosporin. Then another one got it, then another!!! Off to the vets we went. Sure enough, ringworm!! The vet told me that the peroxide was fine, but the neosporin would only HELP the ringworm spread!! By then, almost all of them had it. Not fun. Had to give a lot of baths and do ointment for 2 weeks straight!! Good luck. Please let us know what it was!! Suz |
It was an allergic reation to something. . The Vet put her on an antibiotic and she is all better - thanks again for your concerns!! |
ouch poor baby! That looks painful. HOpefully it is from something like scratching |
