Amen Lorraine. We don't need people breeding cheaper dogs. The dogs deserve better than to be bred with inferior genes (prone to health problems), it's not their fault not all of us can afford them! The thing is, most small dogs have a horribly large market out there because people see them as toys or not much of a reponsibility ("we don't want a DOG dog, so we're looking into buying a Chihuahua!"), so responsible breeders are left trying to weed those impulse buyers out however they can (by contracts, prices, interviews, etc.). You have to realize that there are alot (ALOT) of crummy breeders out there selling their pups for thousands, and alot of GOOD breeders selling their pups for reasonable prices. Sadly, it's the responsible breeders that aren't even making their investment back (I believe in supporting responsible, ethical breeders, so I don't mind if they make a little profit on their pups--if they're able!), and the irresponsible ones that are making bank. If you put the wellbeing of the Yorkie breed and your particular dog first, you'll support those responsible breeders as much as you can, and educate others that $$$$ does not necessarily equal quality.

With a well-bred dog, you get what you pay for. Knowing your dog doesn't have a predisposition for liver shunt or luxating patellas is priceless, and the money you pay to the breeder is money you save later not dealing with those problems!

Hi, I am a newbie to this site and a lover of animals in general. That said , I am also a breeder of Yorkies. I breed show and pet quality. I do not prefer Show quality over pet quality. They all deserve our love, respect and neurtering. EVERY animal has it's place and purpose and most pet quality Yorkies( and dogs in general) have better dispositions and health. Give me a great pet any day. I do warranty even pet quality Yorkies for 1 year on serious genetic faults( liver shunts etc., over/under bites not covered) I do not disrespect show people . As long as that dog is treated with love and respect and as part of the family, that is what matters to me. I have 8 Yorkies that all live in the house and yes at times it is a challenge ,but I told my husband of 21 years not to ever try to make me choose beteeen him and my animals because he might get disappointed. He never has. Pam and all the fur babies. PS There is no such thing as a dumb question. We all had to learn at one time. I am still learning after 20 years. If I ever get to the point I think I know it all, I will quit.

its nice to see that people do have a deeper love for their animals, which cannot be described or seen on the surface. i have always had a strong love for animals. and i feel they have as much right to be here as humans, i move slowly around pigeons in the street, and i dont eat any animals or take from them their milk or eggs.

i wish all people could have the deep apreciation and understanding for species other than themselves, as we do...:animal36

The Yorkie is ranked #2 this year in the US in popularity. As has in the past with dogs that gain popularity, it will change in time and the yorkie will no longer be #2 and will drop in demand by the general public.
You can be sure the Yorkie show breeder that has been around even 10 years ago breeding and showing, immersed in the breed and a fancier from the get go, when they weren't popular and certainly those doing this much longer than I have on to 30 and 40 years, are going to breathe a sigh of relief, pick up the pieces, help place the rescues that are no longer wanted, and do their occasional breeding, show the show quality, place in loving homes the pet quality.
Have you wondered about those that are just breeding for money and say they love the breed? They are going to get out of Yorkies faster than a New York minute on to the new hot ticket selling breed or mix.

Some people just want a yorkie, they don't care if it's doesn't have the perfect coat. And those are the ones that get taken by the puppy mills.

I wholeheartedly agree. This is exactly the experience I had with my breeder. She focuses on health, temperament, and the 4 to 7 lb. range, and offers delightful PETS that are a decent representation of the yorkie breed, for an affordable price.

I could have pd. $1,000 more dollars, and been assured that my pup would have a silky coat, or erect ears....but frankly, that wasn't worth $1,000 more dollars to me, and I didn't HAVE $1,000 more dollars.

I think the show breeders are doing wonderful work, and I totally respect it. I'm also grateful for my breeder who made an adorable pet quality yorkie available to me for a price I could afford. I think there is room for both in yorkie-fandom, and that this board is a terrific sharing and learning place for us ALL.

If you are talking about the gift exchange. They were having alot of problems with people signing on to it and never sending out the gift. Some of them were probably people who quit coming to the forum. So they made it donating members only

Here in my area, show breeders sell their pet quality for the same price as any breeders who aren't show breeders. However, you won't be buying an 8 or 10 week old puppy either. Usually a show breeder doesn't decide on pet or show quality until they are older.
You get a puppy that already had at least two puppy series of vacc's, often is already on the way to potty training, has been socialized. that being said however, personally, I am getting more reluctant to let my pet puppies go to a new home under 6 months of age as I would rather my Vet do the spay/neuter and that is about the best nonbreeding contract I can think of.
I have had a few people this year, local which is the only way I will sell anyway, that did convince me they wanted just a pet. I paid part of the spay/neuter when it was done.

Maybe we should all follow a simple rule: If you question what you are about to post, step back and read it as if you were a new member and then see how you feel about it.

From what I've seen, many of the show exhibitors do stick together and back each other up...until someone that they "dislike" comes into the picture. That's when everyone pounces. There's really no need for it...it just makes themselves look bad.

When I was new in Yorkies, show breeders were cautious with me but they were convinced I was ethical, I signed their contracts and lived up to them and had no problems and still don't have problems with any of them. I can approach whom I wish for a stud service or show dog if I want to.
If there is a problem with someone, there is usually a darn good reason for it and as I posted previously, if someone does something in Yorkies the whole free world knows about it and as a show breeder we will protect our dogs and our breed.
I posted on this thread in the first place because it felt to me a lot of discredit was given to show breeders. Then of course, those not involved in the show world are not going to have a hope of understanding what it is about.

As said on another thread, yorkie exhibitor breeders are cast in an not so desirable light on some yorkie forums.

But, you and I know that there is bad in good in every area of life.

I for one, like you had to prove myself and continue to do so to be accepted in the show world. It wasn't an easy road, lots of hard work, blood, sweat, tears and a strong love of the breed. There is no easy short cut.

I may be guilty...im not sure. I tend to get outspoken on my opinions and I guess if someone ASKS for an opinion I offer one..if they dont I keep my mouth shut...I would never intentionally "attack" anyone for their choices as I wouldnt want anyone to attack me. If I ask for an opinion I hope to hear the truth on how people feel, good bad or ugly...hehe..I love it here and love EVERYONE here equally...

I don't understand why pet quality and show quality are talked about like variations of the breed. To my understanding, you breed for show quality, and pups that don't quite make it are labeled "pet quality." You don't breed FOR pet quality?!?! When did that happen?

I totally agree. Goes back to what I said about supporting responsible, ethical breeders. Not lining the pockets of money grubbers who couldn't care less about the breed.

Too bad you can't make people care.

Hi all, I am a newbie to this forum and I can honestly say that I love it. I have learned so much about the yorkie breed this past month from breeders to regular owners. The info on this forum will help me alot when I get my new fur baby in Feb..:)

I have had big dogs for years but haven't had a little dog in years (I had a terrier mix)........so this is gonna be a new learning experience for me and my daughter.

Just wanted to thank you all for the great info and support that I see here on this forum.

I guess you missed all of the excitement here the other night. I could have sworn I saw you on line when it was going on...but I could be mistaken and if I am, then I apologize.

I guess the reason for this unwarranted behavior would depend on who you ask and what day of the week it is. Either way, the moderators were extremely busy deleting posts on someone's thread...a brag thread where questions that had nothing to do with the thread should have been taken in private messages and not posted on a public forum. It was in poor taste and frankly, no one's business...hence the reason for this thread to be written.
