Preventive Measures for marking territory?!!?!
 

hi everyone,
my little man has been great for the past few months, however, one thing that has really bothered me was how he marks his territory on EVERYTHING. it happened on new years, i took him over to a friends house where they had a yorkie as well. first thing mr. bailey did was walk over to the other puppys bed and lifted his leg (when he pees or poos, he squats, he has never lifted his leg before, thats how i knew he was doing something unusual). so i clapped my hands and he stopped.

well thats how it started, now everywhere he goes, my house, my parents, my girlfriends, he always walks around and marks everything with some pee. it gets frustrating because now i can't even pick him up and put him on my microfiber couch without him lifting his leg on a pillow.

i noticed that he marks A LOT at the basin of my sink and toilet in the kitchen bathroom where his food/water and potty pad are (which he still uses to pee and poo on.) i got fed up with cleaning it up every day after work, so today i decided to move his water/food/potty pad into the kitchen where the rest of his toys and carrying crate/bed is.

are there any suggestions to prevent this from happening? he is almost 8 months old, he is not nuetered (will this stop it from happening) and that is the ONLY bad habit he does which gets messy. i have cleaned it and spray some of that sour deterent on the basin of the toilet and sink and he still does it there after the scent has dried off. is there another method to prevent him from doing this!?!?!?

ps. i thought i'd add some pictures of my little man since its been about 3 months now, hes grown about 5lbs but hes still as cute as he was when he was a puppy. the first picture was about 2 months ago, the second one was with his new haircut i gave him as he holds his chew bone between his hands and watches american idol (one of his favorite shows, the other is friends, and the 24, hes a big jack bauer fan). the last one is of his model sideshot pose showing off his new puppy doo.

He is really cute.. I can only think of the belly band. I trained mine with the water bottle. Everytime they try lifting there leg in the house they get sprayed and biy do they hate that.

Getting him neutered will help. Chachi is neutered but will still mark if he smells another male dog so I have to put a belly band on him at those times. He has never marked in my house

he is sooooooo cute :D if i were you i would nueter him. not just because of the marking. i heard that if you nueter them-they live longer. keep us posted and if you are going to nueter him:animal-pa

okay, so do i spray them with a little water in the face area right after he lifts his leg? because man he is fast, right when that leg is up, dribble dribble and hes done before i can even clap my hands in time hes a real shooter.

oh okay so its more of a defensive mechanism against other dogs? because i dont have any others in my house but he started when he saw those other dogs, maybe hes just trying to protect any chance of any other dogs coming around.

its just i feel bad when i bring him to other peoples house and hes leaking everywhere, i dont really MIND in my house because i can clean it up and not worry about it.

does anyone have any other TRICKS i could use to prevent it, i will do them all and report back the results for any others curious with the same issue im having

what is a good age to nueter them at? he is almost 8 months old, about 5.5 lbs. thanks for the compliment, yes, he loves the ladies, so he is always good when he gets a new hair doo and loves to bathe. he likes smelling fresh for the women. i gave him a mohawk and he walked around petco with his head up and his chest out, i laughed so hard.

dont be embarrased i dont really have an idea either, i think its just something that goes around their waist and holds their wanker against them from peeing? is that tru? i saw pictures of it before? im out at work from 8-5 though, so what if he has to go pee? no one is there to take it off for him!?

He is old enough to be neutered now. Most people have it done at 6 months

Yes a band that goes around their middle.

some beople safety pin a wash cloth around them. anything will work until you can order some.

Well they might still pee but it won't get on everything. You can put a half of a poise pad in it to absorb the pee. So you don't have to change the band so often.

You want your vet to do blood work before the neuter to make she he doesnt have any disorders that putting him under aneshia could put his life at risk. after the surgery you might want to put a baby onsie on him to keep him from licking the stitches. For ten days they cant have baths or go outside except to go potty and you want to keep him from jumping. My male did much better than my female after the surgery. The hardest part was keeping him from jumping and being so active

okay, yeah mr. bailey usually gets excited when people come over or when he sees me, but i just tell him to sit in a stern voice and he stops jumping all around.

just curious, what is nuetering? is it like a male visectomy where they snip something? man, i feel really bad for putting him under the knife, i would be pretty mad if someone "nuetered" me and i had no say eessh, but i guess i gotta do what i gotta do.

what are the benefits from nuetering other than humping everything in site, are there any "CONS" to not having him nuetered?

No it is castration where they take everything. No more testosterone

Its not the same as a vasectomy in human males. In male dogs they remove the testicles. A health benefit is that they dont get testicular cancer. I dont know what the beneffits are to not getting it done are. Maybe someone who has opted to not get that done can answer your question

well truthfully, i was interested in breeding with bailey but it seems that everyone here on the forums is really against me doing that. is this suppose to be a known "unethical" thing to do?

is there usually a common personality change in them? like not as active or really lazy?geez i dont want mr bai to change =z

There was no personality change with Chachi. He didnt slow down at all

i'm not an expert, but i think he is old enough to be neutered. about the mohawk...lol...can you please post a pic of him with his mohawk...i can already imagine it....:p

haha yes i will give him the infamous doo tonight and post a picture, it is a riot because he thinks hes way too cool for school.

I am not trying to draw you away from it by any means, but I do have to say that when we had my cat neutered, he COMPLETELY changed. I mean TOTALLY. Now - maybe cats are TOTALLY different from dogs when it comes to this surgery - I really have no idea, but my cat is an all together different cat now. He does NOTHING but lay around ALL DAY LONG - and he is HUGE FAT! lol. He was a totally normal weight cat before this surgery. My female Cocker Spaniel was spayed, and she was also the exact same way as my cat. She got extremely overweight, wasn't playful at all, and did nothing but lay around. Sooo, my husband has informed me that I CANNOT get Stedman neutered. I had planned on doing it when he turned 6 months, but my husband does not want me to do it now - so we have chose to keep him the way he is - all male parts still intact :) LOL

Your dog's personality is more likely to stay the same if you have him neutered now before he gets all the testosterone in his system. Testosterone changes the dog's personality. There is much debate about weight gain in dogs that are neutered. Most of the gain is normal aging. This can be easily addressed by giving less food and exercising more. Besides preventing testicular cancer, dogs that are neutered are much less likely to run away. Accidents involving cars are still the number one cause of death in dogs.

As far as breeding goes, many of us feel it's best left up to the professionals; people who have studied the breed and know what it entails to produce a healthy litter.

All I can tell you is chachis personality didnt change and he didnt gain any weight besides normal growth. I have cats that have gained weight and become more inactive but they were indoor cats an I dont think cats are as active as dogs anyway. Chachi also became a much better pet after neutering. Before neutering if we took him off leash he would run away. Now he stays with us and never trys to run away.

I hate to discourage you but as I've mentioned on this site before, my vet said that once a male starts lifting his leg he will continue to do so. If you get them neutered BEFORE they lift their leg for the first time, chances are good they won't ever do anything but squat when they pee. My male is almost 4 and he marks a lot, especially lately. There is no reason for him to be doing this either. Sometimes he will just walk over to a chair leg or the edge of the sofa and just pee on it. It drives us CRAZY!! He will probably be whizzing on everything once we get our third dog this weekend. He WILL be wearing belly bands while we are home for sure.

Neurtering did not really change his personality but he did put on a little weight. But I think that the weight gain can be controlled if you see your male starting to gain a bit.
