Absolutely horrible! I would take that dog into the vet's office and let everyone in there see what the vet did to your baby! That usually gets there attention real fast. If they say the vet will see you, tell them you are not paying him a penny for his abuse! That dog should never have come home like that! I feel for you and of course, for the poor little thing! GOOD LUCK! Pat |
Poor baby. :( Breaks my heart. I hope those baths keep helping him. I hope Scruffy's mama gets to court with the other two burned dogs and gets that guy shut down. So awful. |
Oh my gosh, I am so sorry to hear that story. Duke and I will keep Lorna and Scruffy in our prayers, and we wish Scruffy a speedy recovery. I hope that Lorna is able to put that clinic out of business. She should think about contacting her local news station, and seeing if they will run a story about Scruffy's experience, so that everyone will know what that vet did to him. I live in the Bay Area of Northern California, and we have several local news stations that run stories about people that have had horrible experiences with different companies, and many businesses have been closed down because of it. I wish Lorna and Scruffy all the best, and please keep us posted. |
Update on Scruffy 1 Attachment(s) Little Scruffy is better...still a long ways to go, but he is definitely better...thanks to many of you for your prayers and well wishes! He spent, until this evening, his time with the vet...not the one that burned him, but the new vet. She is giving him special baths 3X per day which softens the burns and makes it less painful. That vet has kept him day and night until this evening when Lorna got to bring him home for the night. She will bring him back to the clinic in the morning again for his treatments...and will probably get to have him home again tomorrow night! The baths are a type of gel like stuff and then he is wrapped in gauze and the vet put him in a onesie to help protect the area. The vet told Lorna their is a small chance that Scruffy won't have to have several surgeries as thought before...that these baths may work and cause the scabs to come off on their own. Lorna and the other person whose dog was burned, are sending everything to the medical examiner in Bismarck. Here in ND, the law says a pet is considered property and therefore it is harder to get any action when it is something with a pet. I think though, that even with that law (stupid as it is) may be, that this goes beyond that to being malpractice by this vet. Pics have been sent to the newspaper and tv news and they will be having meetings to see if they should cover this story. I have a feeling it will be slow going, but believe me...Lorna will not let this pass without doing everything in her power to stop that vet from any further injury to innocent animals. Lorna thanks you all for your prayers and concern! I am so happy because today she sounds more like her old self...like the shock wore off. She said to tell you, if you would, to pray also for Daisy. That is the other dog that was burned...the 3rd dog we haven't found out who he/she is yet. I think I remembered most of what's happening and if I've forgotten something, I'll include it in the next update! Thanks all...you are gems! Here's a picture of Lorna with Scruffy. |
I am so glad to hear Scruffy is doing better, I will keep sending prayers their way and for Daisy and the other pup too.. Thank you for keeping us posted, it was nice to hear a little good news and see that sweet picture. |
Will this darling Yorkie ever grow its hair back? Kate Quote:

That is good news. I hope he recovers quickly and doesn't need the surgeries. Also, that the news decides to cover the story. It is unbelievable that it happened to one dog never mind three. The vet is either an uncaring SOB or a complete moron. I hope he gets what he deserves. On a lighter note, Scruffy reminds me of Benji. One of my favorite shows when I was little. :) |
Thanks for keeping us updated. This is such a sad story. I get teary-eyed whenever I think about it. I love the picture of Lorna with Scruffy, you can see the love each of them have for each other and I think that's great! |
What a beautiful picture of Scruffy & Lorna! My prayers & thoughts go out to them, Daisy, & the other dog, too. What a horrible thing to endure! Reading the story broke my heart, put tears in my eyes...but seeing the pictures made me sick. How unthinkable that this sort of thing would happen...I'm a simple gal, but wouldn't you think with burns that bad, the vet & others in the surgery would have smelled something?? I mean, if I leave the curling iron on my hair too long, it starts to burn...hello!!! I'm just beside myself thinking about these poor puppies & their families. I'm glad Scruffy is on the mend! Hugs & puppy kisses!! |
Would we help the process go faster if we wrote into the news paper? If they know you have all this support behind you, they might have more of an incentive to get the story going faster. |

If you want us to send e-mails and letters to the news station i would be glad to help out :) just tell us where to send it, maybe it will light a fire under their butts |
Oh, how that poor baby must be hurting. Please keep us posted on the outcome. Did the vet thnk the coat will grow back? |
This is SO sad! I'd contact a lawyer ASAP!!! How can this vet be allowed and to continue burning dogs like this? I must have missed something. I do not understand how he got burned on his back when they were neutering him? He was laying on his back. Was the table he was on too hot? I'm just confused  I hope that he recooperates quickly. I know Scruffy must be in misery! :cry8: |
I am glad he is better now. I was so worried. |
Hi All...I just talked to Lorna. I told her about the idea someone gave me of emailing the newspaper and she thought that was great. She's going to get back to me and then I'll post the email address for the newspaper and the board of medical examiners. She called to talk to the editor of the newspaper twice yesterday and he wasn't in, and has not called her back. Makes me wonder if he's friends with the vet. Our newspaper can tend to be quite biased. Oh...one more thing...I was mistaken about the number of dogs...there are 6 total! We don't have names of the other people yet, except for Daisy, who is a yellow lab. If you can imagine, Daisy's burns are even deeper than Scruffy's. That poor dog...and Daisy was only in to have her dew claws removed and it was a few days after Scruffy's surgery...so these burns didn't happen all in one day. I thought dew claw surgery was simple and fast, but poor Daisy was burned even worse than Scruffy. Makes me sick to think of 6 dogs suffering beyond compare because of an incompetent vet who should not be allowed to inflict this on another innocent pet! On a brighter note, Scruffy is spending the weekend with Lorna. The vet showed her how to do the baths and I'm so glad Scruffy and Lorna are together again. Scruffy is really healing nicely, thanks to the wonderful care of the new vet, and Lorna's love and devotion to Scruffy. |
I think it is just wonderful how all of the YT's have rallied around Lorna and Scruffy. This is what it is all about, in the short time I have been a member I have realized what a tight group this is, and how newbies are welcomed in with such love and acceptance. I hope we can do something to help with this problem vet, he needs some of us to hold him down and give him the same treatment that he made these poor dogs endure. |
It is tearful enough to know this happened to Lorna's dog Scruffy but SIX dogs? How could this mistake be repeated Six freaking times???????? This does have to hit the airways. I wonder if a local TV news station would respond. Like a mentioned before most news stations have a consumer alert segment. Then I bet lawyers would be lining up for a group law suit against this #@!^*&*&*$!!! vet. |
oh that's good news to hear that he's doing better! i sure do hope that this vet gets what he deserves ,that is just inhumane and heartless someone ought to burn him like that and see how he feels  |
This completely ticks me off! 6 freakin dogs burned? If the local newspaper won't listen, someone else will. She should try the local TV stations! |
Scruffy Crisis PR Hi Connie- First, our thoughts and prayers (and puppy kisses!) are with Lorna and Scruffy! Mya's Mom is totally right. You've got to get this out to the local broadcast and print media. I cannot believe something this horrible could have happened to such a beautiful baby when he was in the hands of a vet -- someone who should be a trusted caregiver. I'm not familiar with the media in North Dakota but what's the biggest paper in the state? Also, who are the big affiliate broadcast stations -- CBS, NBC, ABC? The thought that this has happened to SIX different dogs calls for some serious action. Please, please, please let us know if we can help in any way. (Mojito's mom has a background in PR and would be happy to assist in your efforts to get the word out!) Keep us posted.... All the best, Mojito & Irmi |
I was wondering how Scruffy is doing? Can you give us an update? |
I am wondering about Scruffy too!! Anyone heard anything more from Connie?? |
Hi all! Scruffy is doing SO much better...bless his little heart! He is home with Lorna now and healing so much better than the vet thought he would. I haven't seen him in about a week, but when I saw him, he was so sweet and happy to be with Lorna. At first he'd spend days and nights at the vet. Then Lorna got to take him home at night, and now he is home full time. He's still bandaged up and wearing a onsie over the gauze. I'm so thankful he's doing so well. I have never seen anything so awful. A few days back, Lorna saw a man walking a dog that was bandaged like scruffy, so she stopped and asked him if his dog had been burned. He said yes, and they talked, but he was not very open with info and wouldn't even give Lorna his name, so we're wondering if he's been paid off or something. Then there's Daisy...poor Daisy. I saw pictures of her, but it was a black and white copy and didn't show up well. If I can get the main copy, I'll scan it for you. Daisy was burned worse than Scruffy if you can imagine that! Her burns were so deep that they went deep into the muscle. Her burns were also different than Scruffy's. Instead of a pattern type, it was very large burns. Daisy looks mutilated...even moreso than Scruffy! It is Daisy's owner and Lorna who have contacted the Vet Medical Examiners who will review this case in a week or two...can't remember the exact date. I will be sure to let you know what comes of that! |
Oh my God, what a truly sad and heartbreaking ordeal for everyone and every pet involved. Lorna needs to take pictures, Pictures, PICTURES!!!!! I cried when ready the first post of the thread, and I GASPED when I saw the pictures. There is no jury or judge who could listen to the vets defense and then see the pictures and be on the vets side no matter what was said...a picture says a thousand words! In this case MANY more!!!! Lorna needs to take pictures of Scruffy when his bath is going on, wrapped up, sleeping, EVERYTHING!! It has changed the poor babys way of life for now! I am so thankful that he is healing and home with Lorna. I'm sure their bond will surpass anything she could have hoped for before this. I pray for total recovery for poor little Scruffy and look forward to update on his condition. I hope Lorna will take pictures of the entire healing process and the outcome, I just have a feeling it will be the evidence she will need. |
OMG! that is horrible!! |
Burns Bo and I will write whoever it takes to make sure this doesn't happen again. |
OMW I am sorry I do so hope and pray that Scruffy has a full recovery and will keep her and Lorna in my thoughts. I was going to have Sydnee spayed this month but now I am terrified of the thought. I am going to print these out and show them to my Vet and see what he says about this. Sue the hell out of the jerk (not what I am really thinking) those photos made me cry. |
