when is it safe to walk bella?? rape in my area  there have been 4 rapes in 4 days where i live. i live in gainesville florida right behind the university of florida campus. this area was supposed to be the safest considering it is walking distance from the campus. a lot of the rapes happened in the early morning, and the police say that the girls raped were being watched, which scares me even more because i walk bella alllll the time around this neighborhood. one girl was raped at 7 am...she was walking her dog and a guy came from behind her with a gun and forced her inside her house. i am terrified....i want to get bella on a schedule that is safe for her and for me. i really dont want to be taking her out any time past 11 pm now (even that late i am scared) and i would like to take her out in the morning as late as possible too.....what do you guys think i should do???? sorry this is soo long i even thought about training her totally on pee pee pads, but that would be so hard bc she is completly potty trained to go outside.... |

How awful. I think I would start using the pee pads. I do want to say if you do go out, whatever time of day, you you carry a whistle around your neck and some mace! Is there somebody who can go out with you? A buddy system? Be careful! |
i know it is sooo scary....but how long in between bathroom breaks is ok for bella....if i walk her while its still a little light it would be like 6 or 7 here....thats so long for her to wait till morning to go potty again right? and i make my boyfriend walk her with me when i take her out for the 11pm bathroom break...... |
Joy, Please don't walk her alone until that maniac is caught. Find a walking partner that also has a dog and walk them together! Do you have mace or pepper spray? In situations like these you might not even be safe walking to your car. You said the one girl was taken back in to her own house! Please be careful and be safe. |
wow, that is the scariest fear a woman has to deal with. I'd do stay in unless you have a man to walk with. |
Why haven't I heard of this 4 rapes in 4 days??? Why haven't I heard this on the national news or something???? Have I been under a rock or something??? This is AWFUL and Gainesville has enough public relations problems with this sort of thing as it is. Are they trying to keep this under the radar or something???? |
ok....i am going to buy pepper spray first thing...and i also want to to take this self defense class but it isnt till feb.....if i decided to stay inside....how do i train her on the pads after go going outside for the last 8 months??? |
Ok, I know you don't wanna hear this... but if I was you I would start Bella on the pee pads... And when there is still daylight you can walk her... This way she will be trained to use the pee pads and outside to go potty... Maggie uses the pee pads and outside to go potty... Here where I live it's kind of dangerous too... Katiuscia & Maggie...:aimeeyork :aimeeyork |
I would ask around to see if there is someone else that needs to walk their dog too. The buddy system mentioned before would be the ONLY way I would be out walking until this guy is found. I used to be young and feel invincible but seen enough now to know better. Maybe your boyfriend could take the morning walk too? Lots of dogs use the pee pads for back ups -- not a bad time to try them. |
it was on national tv last night around 7 pm.......the 2 rapes have been in news letters in gainesville, but i havent been able to find too much info on it. it was also on the gainesville news channel.....in case you were wondering, they all happen the same way...i guy either froced entry with a gun to the girls head, or broke into the house...the had a gun, wore balck clothes and a ski mask, robbered the girls, tied them to the bed and raped them...leaving 2 of them tied up.....the jerk also took thew sheets so currently there is no evidence!!! |
ok....i guess you are right about the pads.......how would you suggest i trrain her to use them???? |

maybe get a gun or a bigger dog? not but seriuosly have soemone or maybe a whole group of people go out with you even if it's neighbors...maybe you could start a neighborhood doggiewalk? |
I would definatley stay in rather than walk her alone. Try putting a pad by the door you use to go walk her and use the phrase you used to potty train her with, like go potty. Also, just be super aware when out and about. Keep your cell phone in your hand and peper spray in the other. Hopefully they will catch the person soon. Stay safe. |
I would not walk alone under any circumstances. I hope you can get a guy friend to walk with you. Or maybe a friend with a big scary looking dog. Please don't take any chances. |
Oh my gosh! I used to live in Gainseville, that is so scary!!! You can train her to go inside. I have Jaden trained to go indoors and outdoors. The easiest way to train, that I've found is by starting with the pee-pads with the pheramones in them that encourage them to pee. Confine them to a small place and put the pad out. If they don't pee on it by themselves if you are there when they start to pee just pick them up, in a gentle firm voice say "No" and put them on their pad. If you keep doing this evenetually they will get the hang of it. After you get her pad trained, what I've done with Jaden is I've moved him to a litter box. You can buy one by Purina at Petsmart and use the doggie litter they have there and to get them to start going in the box you just move the pad there. Once they realize the box is where they go you can remove the pad and just have the litter. If you want her to walk to get exercise and can't fine someone to go with you, I'd take her to a petsmart or something like that and just make a few rounds around the whole store. Walk all the aisles and stuff, you wouldn't even have to buy anything and at least you'd be safe! Be careful! Hugs to you and Bella! |

Teaching to potty outside was the same thing... I would even take w/ me the PipiDog and put a few drops on the grass so she could get the idea... It worked w/ me... I hope it help you too... |
Another good thing about the pee pads is that when it's rainning neither you nor your baby have to go outside and get wet...;) :D And above all that, It's safer!!!;) :) Katiuscia & Maggie |
Maybe you could load her up and take her on a daily walk at the park or something? I'd definitely try the pads. Be careful, that is so scary! |
thanks so much for everyones advice....i just feel so bad for her...bc she has been totally trained to go outside and now i have to switch it....i feel like she will get confused.....and the thing is she NEVER goes inside....so it might be a task...but its worth it..... |
what about just going out in the front yard to pee? or do you still think that would be risky? its really scary that there have been 4 in 4 days. |
OMG that IS scary:eek: The best thing you can do is to NOT have a set schedule. If someone were watching you, they'd know exactly when you were going to be vulnerable. If you do take walks with Bella, don't go at the same times and try not to go alone. The pee pads are a good fix until this bastard is caught, at least when it's dark outside. Maybe she'll just learn that when it's dark outside, she uses the pads? ! I wouldn't worry about her being confused, both of my puppies do both. Stay safe!!!!!!!! |

pee pads:thumbup: BE CAREFUL |
Please be careful, this is terrible, you and your dog stay safe. |
ahh i am so frustrated......bella isnt getting it...i knnow it takes time, but it is 7:45 am here and she has to go potty sooo bad!!! but she wont go on the pads, i keep saying go potty and putting her on them but she just looks up at me sooo sad. i guess i will just keep trying, bc there is no way i can take her out right now, it is sooo early and way too dead on the streets......poor bella has to suffer bc some wacko is loose....:( |
Joy just keep working with her. I have been raped and I have mopped up dog pee, trust me you would much rather mop and pooper scoop! Hope they catch the jerk soon! Angie |
Wow, Joy. I work at UF and I haven\'t even heard of the rapes! They did send out an email about employee safety but I honestly didn\'t think anything about it. I\'m glad I read your post so I know to be careful when I am walking to work. I don\'t really have any advice for you and Bella since my yorkie is trained to go outside and I would have no idea about training him for pee pads. It took me so long to get him trained outside that I wouldn\'t want to confuse him with going inside. Good luck and be safe! |
Angie, I am so sorry to hear this. Thanks for the warning to all of us who could be vulnerable to these horrible predators. |
No problem.....I just hope they catch the jerk. I could not imagine having to live knowing for a fact there is a rapist in my neighborhood Angie |
