I have to admit, I WAS one of those people who used to think of little dogs as "rats". I've always been a big dog person, until I got my first Chihuahua, Mia. After that, I was a sucker for little dogs. After all, they are dogs, just in little bodies. :) I think puppy mills will always be a problem, with whatever dogs are the current fad. My dad and I were just talking the other day about how popular labs became years ago, and people started breeding them like crazy. Now you can find AKC labs in the paper for $50 or less. I get sick at all the lab ads I see. So many people are still breeding less than ideal dogs, just to make a few bucks. It also makes me sick to see how many labs are in animal shelters. :( |
I certainly have mixed feelings about the Yorkie being so popular. They are a great breed. I have bonded with this breed and now many good people get to enjoy them as well. Along with that, there is also the downside and that is where we all become educators outside and within this great forum. |
I saw that too this morning, just caught the end of it. He said something like, you sure thats a real dog, not a rat? Then he said, no really, its cute. --really this is the absolute truth-I was sitting right here the other day-and I saw across the kitchen a REAL RAT come out of my laundry room walk over to LillyBelle's food, take some and walk back to the laundry-I just sat frozen and shocked. ****It didnt look a thing like my LillyBelle**** We now have a trap set, but havnt caught it yet. |
Has being no. 1 hurt the labrador retriever breed, do you think? |
Aw, people make joking comments like that all the time, and it doesn't offend me. I understand why some people don't think they're "real" dogs....and let's face it...even WE don't really think they're dogs! :D We think they're HUMAN! :D People in my own family (husband and sons) gave me a hard time for wanting a "little rat dog". Until we GOT them! :D And now they're the biggest yorkies fans in the world! :D I figure, dispairaging comments just spring from the ignorance of the yorkie-uninitiated! :D |

I know Al must have ruffled alot of Yorkie lover's feathers!! I agree it's not great that they are popular...yet I don't think we would have Pippa right now if my daughter hadn't seen a few yorkies around and thought that her life's dream was to have a dog..namely yorkie. She has long since moved on, but mom (me) fell in LOVE! I wouldn't have ever known what a wonderful breed they are. I woulda still been a "cat" person:) The most offensive thing anyone ever said about Pippa: "That's not a dog, that's lunch". From a Big Dog's owner. I wanted to open up a can....but I just chose to ignore:mad: |

I just had to laugh at that. You must have been somewhat taken aback by his audacity. You do want to get him though. I've heard that dogs can get leptospirosis from rats eating or drinking from their bowls. Quote:

My husband said that about our lab eating our yorkie when we first got him. Of course he didnt and they are the best of friends. Also at least in this area, labs are $250-300. There are few large labs in the pounds here. Chance our lab has always been very energetic, but now he just tries to keep up with Rusty our Yorkie! The hardest part has been that Rusty is so hard to potty train. We just had our carpet cleaned in October and it looks like 100 dogs pee here every day! We have tried to do it outside only, and resorted to pee pads, but he just pees next to them! It is so frusterating we have tried everything that people recommend. He is 6 months old. I am pregnant and my husband says if hes not potty trained by the time the baby comes we have to get rid of him. Sorry to change the topic! |
What is scary about Yorkies being #2 on the AKC list is that EVERYONE will want one. And soon shelters will be filled with sad shivering yorkies turned in by owners who just can't handle these delightfully energetic, intelligent, sensitive furkids. |

I know this has gotten alittle off the Today Show topic-but is about a RAT nontheless. Still have not caught the rat-hubby put down 2 traps w/peanut butter-guess he doesnt like peanut butter, put a bucket with LillyBelles food in it, and a stool so the rat could get in but not out-he got in ate the food and somehow got out. Now have a larger bucket, sprayed the sides with oil-but he hasnt gotten in this one. We've been keeping the laundry room door closed-so at least he cant come out into the kitchen and EAT HER FOOD. **I named the rat Ben-yikes!--he bares NO resemblence to LillyBelle!** |
